Pompeo announces 'understanding' between U.S. and Taliban

U.S. officers and the Taliban have reached an “understanding” that would end in a “discount in violence” in Afghanistan, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo introduced Friday, paving the best way for an agreement later this month that might convey to an end America’s longest conflict.

The announcement from Pompeo comes after he and Defense Secretary Mark Esper met final week with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani on the sidelines of a world safety forum in Munich. An American official said then that the U.S. and the Taliban had reached a truce settlement for a seven-day “reduction in violence” to be followed by the start of all-Afghan peace talks within 10 days.

“Challenges remain, but the progress made in Doha supplies hope and represents a real opportunity,” Pompeo stated Friday.
