Schumer calls on Trump admin to sanction Russia over election meddling

Senate Minority Chief Chuck Schumer is looking on Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to impose sanctions on Russia amid considerations that the nation is once more meddling in U.S. presidential elections.

"We urge you to right away and forcefully impose sanctions on the federal government of the Russian Federation, any Russian actors determined to be answerable for such interference, and people appearing on their behalf or offering material or financial help for these election interference efforts," wrote Schumer, Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.), the top Democrat on the Senate Overseas Relations Committee, and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-Ohio.), the highest Democrat on the Senate Banking Committee.

The letter, obtained by POLITICO, lists a number of sanction instruments the administration might impose, together with the 2017 Countering America’s Adversaries By means of Sanctions Act, which imposed new sanctions on Russia, North Korea and Iran. Senate Democrats argue that imposing sanctions would send a clear message to Russian President Vladimir Putin that election interference won't be tolerated.

Their letter comes after the New York Occasions and the Washington Publish reported final week that a senior intelligence official briefed the Home Intelligence Committee that Russia was interfering in the 2020 election with the aim of getting Trump re-elected. Last week, Trump named Richard Grenell, the present U.S. ambassador to Germany and an in depth ally, as appearing director of national intelligence. He's changing Joseph Maguire, who was ousted after the Home briefing.

"There's nearly no nationwide safety menace more critical than that posed by those who would systematically undermine confidence in, and the effective operation of, our democratic elections," the lawmakers wrote. They added that failing to impose sanctions "can be an abdication of your duty to protect and defend the US from this critical menace to our nationwide safety, and to the integrity of our electoral course of."
