Graham urges foreign leaders to assist Barr with investigation into 2016 election


Senate Judiciary Chairman Lindsey Graham on Wednesday asked several overseas leaders to proceed to help Lawyer Basic William Barr together with his investigation into the 2016 election.

In a letter to the prime ministers of Australia, Italy and Britain, the South Carolina Republican requested their “continued cooperation with Lawyer Common Barr as the Department of Justice continues to research the origins and extent of overseas affect in the 2016 election.”

At President Donald Trump’s urging, Barr is analyzing how the FBI investigation into connections between Russia and the Trump marketing campaign started.

Graham said within the letter that in the course of the 2016 election, the U.S. regulation enforcement and intelligence communities used a “deeply flawed dossier crammed with hearsay and written by a biased, former United Kingdom intelligence officer” — a reference to the so-called Steele file — as part of its investigation.

He also added that regulation enforcement had acquired “intelligence from an Italian ‘professor’” — referring to Joseph Mifsud, whose interactions with a former Trump campaign adviser, George Papadopoulos, prompted the FBI to open its counterintelligence investigation — and accepted info from an Australian diplomat. That was a reference to a reported tip from an Australian official, Alexander Downer, to the FBI about attainable collusion between Russia and Trump’s 2016 marketing campaign.


Graham’s letter came after The New York Occasions reported last week that Trump had asked Prime Minister Scott Morrison of Australia to help Barr together with his investigation. Within the letter, Graham defended Barr’s work.

“That the Lawyer Basic is holding conferences together with your nations to assist in the Justice Division’s investigation of what happened is properly inside the bounds of his regular actions,” Graham wrote. “He's simply doing his job.”
