Acts including Lily Allen and Fatboy Slim are set to perform

More than 50,000 people are expected to attend one of Cornwall's biggest surf and music festivals of the year this month.

Boardmasters will take place from 5 to 9 August at Watergate Bay and Fistral Beach in Newquay, complete with music, surfing, skating and wellness activities.

While events at Fistral are free for the public to attend, those taking place at Watergate Bay are for Boardmasters ticket holders only.

Here is a guide to the timings, acts, transport and other useful information to help you plan ahead for the big event.

Which artists are performing and when?

A host of music acts are set to perform across the festival's four stages.

On Friday 7 August, Fatboy Slim, The Kooks, James Arthur, Rose Gray, Take A Chance On Us and Dizzee Rascal will take to the main stage.

On Saturday 8 August, headliner Lily Allen will join the likes of Nia Archives, REN, Alessi Rose, Kerr Mercer, Cornwall Rock Choir and Example.

Kasabian, Loyle Carner, Joy Crookes, Brooke Combe, Asha Banks and Tinie Tempah will complete the mix on the main stage on the Sunday 9 August.

Arena opening times

The arena will be open from 11:00-02:00 BST Friday to Sunday.

Gates on Wednesday will be open from 17:00-02:00, while the arena will be open from 15:00-02:00 on Thursday.

Getting there

Big Green Coach is this year's Boardmasters travel partner, offering tickets for coaches directly to the site from £20.

Trains meanwhile, will be running to Newquay via Great Western Railway, with a Festival Shuttle available from the station.

Taxis will be also be dropping off at the site, the drop off point being the 'Blue Gate', next to the Shuttle Bus Station.

A Festival Shuttle wristband, which allows unlimited trips around the events sites from £15, will also be available.

The shuttle runs continuously on a loop between three stops at Watergate Bay, Newquay Train Station and Manor Road Bus Stop - a 20 min walk to Fistral Beach.

The buses will be available Wednesday-Thursday 07:00-22:00; Friday-Sunday 07:00-03:00 and Monday 07:00-14:00.

Parking

Drivers needing to park at the festival can follow signs for AA/Boardmasters to the festival before following signs for 'Green Gate'.

Pick-up and drop-off is also signed from Green Gate, with parking available from £50.

Limited accessible parking is available for blue badge holders and pre-booked accessibility ticket holders.

Road closures

Alexandra Road and Watergate Road will be closed during the festival for crowd safety reasons.

The closure will be in place from Porth, at the junction of Alexandra Road and Lewarne Road through to the Junction of Watergate Bay and Trevarrian Hill.

It will be in place between 06:00-03:00 on Wednesday; 10:00-03:00 on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday; and 03:00-14:00 on Monday.

There will also be restrictions on vehicles turning left out of Priory Road and Rialton Road onto the A3059 heading towards the festival.

A diversion will be in place via Nansledan Roundabout to Quintrell Downs roundabout and Halloon roundabout.

A traffic management plan will be in place throughout the festivalSurf and skate

The Boardmasters Open will be held at Fistral Beach from 5 to 9 August this year -with a new Qualifying Series 4,000 status, up from QS 2,000 last year.

It means the winner can get up to 4,000 points towards progressing up the rankings, instead of 2,000.

Skaters can also compete on the Boardmasters Skate Ramp, while the Boardmasters Talk Tent will host a range of talks on surfing, the ocean and sustainability.

The Surf Village in Fistral will be selling surf gear, food stalls, and beach essentials.

The annual Boardmasters Open will be held at Fistral BeachCamping

Campsite gates are open from 10:00-22:00.

All campsites must be vacated by 12:00 on Monday 10 August.

Food and drink

Food and drink can be bought from a range of vendors at both sites during the festival.

Free water points are also available throughout and festival goers are encouraged to bring a reusable water bottle to top up when they need.

Weekend campers aged 18 or over can bring in limited amounts of alcohol to the campsite, but this is limited to 24 cans of beer/lager and/or cider and/or alcopops (max 7% ABV) per person or two bottles of wine in a non glass container (max 12% ABV).

A number of food vendors will be offering food and drink for sale throughout the festivalWhat else is on?

Children will be able to access the festival's Kids Club from 11:00-19:00, offering family craft activities and workshops.

Those with camping tickets wanting to unwind, meanwhile, can book into 'Zennor Haven', a spa in the festival's Cribbar Village offering sauna and cold plunge pools, hot tub and a range of treatments.

Workshops and classes including yoga, breathwork and crafts are available from £5 with access to the spa from £20.

Those staying in the Boutique Camping area will have access to The Boutique Spa - home to a sauna, hot tubs, cold plunge pools and massages. Prices start at £20 per person.

A selection of wellness classes and activities will be available for campersRules and safety advice

Ticket holders must wear their Wristbands at all times while in the festival venue.

Children aged 15 and under must also be accompanied by an adult aged 21 years and over.

Each adult can accompany a maximum of two children.

As the festival is at the beach, everyone is urged to follow the beach flag system and advice of lifeguards if entering the water.

We may be in the middle of one of the hottest summers on record, but behind the scenes at some West Midlands theatres, the making of a winter tradition is well under way.

At the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre, festive jokes and songs are already taking shape as preparations begin for this year's pantomime, Treasure Island.

For Ian Adams and Tam Ryan, who write and star in the show's annual production, Christmas is never far from their minds.

"It constantly occupies our thoughts," Ryan said. "We're constantly thinking about what we are going to do in December in July, which is quite disorientating."

The pair started working on the script last September, picking it up again in January after last year's panto run.

As for what the next few months will hold as panto season fast approaches, Adams said: "When the script is written, the show is then cast. Once we know who is playing the roles, we can adapt things as necessary."

"Autumn is where we really hit the ground running," Ryan added.

While sets are already being built, he said that the cast would be fitted for their costumes ahead of the press launch in October, before assembling for rehearsals in November.

The Grand Theatre's production of Treasure Island will run from 28 November until 3 January, starring Adams and Ryan with celebrity casting yet to be announced.

Last year, their production of Sleeping Beauty was named Best Pantomime over 950 Seats at the UK Pantomime Awards.

Meanwhile, in Stafford, work is well under way on the scenery and props for Lichfield Garrick Theatre's production of Robin Hood, as well as about 10 other pantomimes.

Pete Bruus of Staffs Scenic Solutions and Tim Murley of Unit 1 Scenery spend a significant amount of their time working on pantomime sets. Bruus is in charge of building the sets, before passing them over to Murley to paint them.

Bruus said it felt strange creating festive scenes while temperatures soared outside.

"Sometimes when you are working in here and it's as hot as it is and you're doing Christmas shows, you are building panto sets, it is quite surreal," he said. "But that's the industry. That's what we do."

Bruus, 43, has been working in theatre since he was a teenager, starting as a stagehand at the Stafford Gatehouse Theatre. He went on to study theatre at university before working at the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry for 13 years. He now runs his own business.

"Panto has been very much my life since 15 years of age," he said. "I couldn't tell you how many panto sets I've built, I've built so many."

Bruus said that Lichfield's production of Robin Hood had been on his radar since January, and he had since picked up more panto and Christmas work, designing sets for Imagine Theatre and Wise Owl Theatre. He added that he expected more festive projects to come in over the next few months.

"We want to make sure that we don't overwork ourselves," he said. "Realistically we only have three months - pantos start going in November. The next three months is going to be full on pantomimes and Christmas shows."

Murley added: "I'd say half the year's definitely taken up by panto and other Christmas shows and it just builds up, particularly from now, it really starts to build up until November."

Daniel Buckroyd said he was "chuffed" with how Robin Hood preparations were going

Daniel Buckroyd, chief executive and artistic director at Lichfield Garrick Theatre, said that he was "chuffed" to see the panto set "coming to life".

"We started work designing our production of Robin Hood last autumn, but it was just designs on paper and designs in a model box, so it's fantastic to see it coming to life and working with creatives like the team here, the set builders, to bring that vision to life," he said.

"It's brilliant and colourful and the audiences are going to love it."

Robin Hood opens on 20 November and runs until 10 January.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Geraldo Perdomo and Corbin Carroll homered during a seven-run seventh inning, and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Cleveland Guardians 12-8 on Saturday night for their fourth straight victory.

Perdomo also had the fourth four-hit game of his six-year career and drove in three runs for the Diamondbacks, who hold the second wild-card spot in the National League. The shortstop is 6 for 10 with four RBIs in the first two games of the series.

Brian McCann had three hits while Nolan Arenado also went deep with a solo shot in the eighth inning.

Rhys Hoskins and Chase DeLauter homered for Cleveland, which is 5-10 since the All-Star break. Steven Kwan added three hits as the Guardians (56-56) fell to .500 for the first time since May 10.

Gerardo Carrillo (2-0), the second of six Arizona pitchers, got the win after throwing two scoreless innings.

The Diamondbacks sent 10 to the plate in the seventh. Perdomo led off the frame and gave the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead with a first-pitch drive over the right-field wall off Hunter Gaddis (1-3).

Arizona scored their next six runs with two outs. Ildemaro Vargas had an RBI single, Brian McCann had a two-run double and Carroll launched a three-run homer to center.

Hoskins gave Cleveland a 2-0 lead in the first inning with a two-run homer to center field off Arizona rookie starter Kohl Drake.

The Diamondbacks tied it at 2 in the fifth when Ryan Waldschmidt scored from second after Hoskins errant throw to first and Gabriel Moreno drove in Carroll on a fielder's choice.

Cleveland mounted a rally with five runs in the eighth inning. DeLauter led it off with a homer to right-center while Steven Kwan had the other key hit with a two-run single. DeLauter came up as the potential tying run with two outs and runners on first and second but lined out to center.

Up next

Arizona right-hander Merrill Kelly (8-8, 4.36 ERA) and Cleveland righty Gavin Williams (10-6, 3.71) are slated for Sunday's series finale.

AWS is the primary reason to invest in Amazon

While most investors recognize Amazon from its dominance in the commerce industry, I think there are far more compelling reasons to invest in Amazon stock. Namely, its AWS cloud computing service. During Q2, AWS delivered sales growth of 37%, crushing Wall Street's expectation of 31% growth. This is a big deal because AWS actually generates the majority of Amazon's profits.

In Q2, AWS generated $16.6 billion in operating income. That's about 60% of Amazon's total, so just because AWS has only a 21% revenue share doesn't mean it's a small part of Amazon's business. However, this quarter's rapid growth rate is just the beginning.

Amazon is spending a lot of money on capital expenditures this year, $220 billion to be exact, and nearly all of that money is going to build and equip data centers. This will increase the available computing power that Amazon can rent out to clients, allowing revenue to expand. So, investors need to realize that this is the new paradigm, and that AWS and Amazon as a whole will likely produce incredible growth for the foreseeable future, especially if AI demand continues to ramp up.

Companywide, Amazon's 20% revenue growth rate is one of the best it has posted since the COVID-19 era.

As alluded to above, this will likely continue to accelerate for the foreseeable future, as AI spending isn't expected to slow down anytime soon. I think all of this indicates that Amazon is a great investment over the next few years, as AWS' growth will substantially boost Amazon's profit and growth profile.

Amazon should outperform the broader market and deliver investors the market-beating returns they desire. Even though Amazon's stock soared following the results, I wouldn't be surprised to see this strength continue for a while, as few investors realized that a huge quarter like this was even possible from Amazon.

Investors are expecting massive growth and guidance from the Elon Musk enterprise, which was the largest IPO in history earlier this year.

SpaceX's massive expectations

When SpaceX reports earnings, investors will be looking at the continued progress of its space and artificial intelligence (AI) endeavors. Importantly, investors care about the growth of the Starlink satellite internet business, which is supposed to be the major cash cow in the next few years. In 2025, this segment grew revenue 50% year over year with impressive profit margins.

There are also expectations of accelerated growth from the AI infrastructure business, which generated only $3.2 billion in revenue last year, including advertising sales from X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. With major deals signed with the likes of Anthropic and Alphabet to sell AI compute at its data centers, SpaceX should begin to see growth accelerate this quarter, with expectations for even greater AI gains in the years ahead.

All told, investors are expecting second-quarter revenues of $6.9 billion, representing 68% year-over-year growth. However, for Wall Street analysts, this is where the growth party just gets started. Revenue growth across the entire business is expected to be around 100% for all of 2026 and 2027, leading 2027 revenues to balloon to $80 billion, up from $18.7 billion in 2025.

A lockup period and short-term volatility

Along with this earnings report, investors should be mindful of the upcoming end of the SpaceX IPO lockup period. A large chunk of shares is set to be unlocked on Aug. 6, two days after the report. These are insiders, not Elon Musk, who have held their shares privately for many years and are now collectively worth hundreds of billions of dollars.

What is likely to happen in the months ahead is a flood of sell orders from these insiders, who are generally professional investors looking to send gains back to their partners. For a stock with a market cap of $1.5 trillion, this stream of sell orders could push the share price down. This is what typically happens after an IPO, and it's why the average IPO stock underperforms the market in the year following its debut.

Should you buy SpaceX stock before earnings?

For any investor looking to buy the dip on SpaceX -- shares are down 44% from highs -- it is important to understand this lockup period dynamic when making any investment decision. However, what will matter most over the long term is SpaceX's fundamental business growth, and the price you pay for it today.

Wall Street expectations for 100% revenue growth in both 2026 and 2027 are massive and would be a huge acceleration from 2025 growth. There is a potential for SpaceX to resell AI data center computing power that is not being used for its research and the Grok chatbot, but the question is what profit margins this reselling to hyperscalers will yield. I think low.

Starlink is a great business, but it generated just $11.4 billion in revenue last year, while SpaceX has a market cap of $1.5 trillion. I think the massive expectations of SpaceX's growth, along with this lockup period, are going to lead to a sinking stock price for the rest of 2026. This makes the stock one to avoid before earnings. Keep it on the watch list for now, and buy at a much lower price in the years ahead if you like the business quality.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012)

Sony’s marketing team infamously released about one-fifth of the movie online before the film’s release...which is merely the most obvious reason why The Amazing Spider-Man had a been-there-seen-that quality when it hit theaters in 2012.

Less of a reboot than a shameless do-over, Marc Webb‘s first Spider-Man film tells a more protracted origin story, with half the fun and twice the self-importance (the film earns a rare dead-dad hat trick). There’s also a learning-the-powers montage that involves skateboarding and Coldplay, but the worst thing about Amazing 1 is how it even faithfully repeats the bad parts of Sam Raimi’s first Spider-Man: Here again, the bad guy’s an unconvincing-looking green dude, driven to evil by science and attacking people on a bridge. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014)

Bad but essential, the second Amazing movie is a mess of misconceived world-building ambitions. Intended as a dark-dramatic sequel, it plays more now like a prequel to several unmade spinoffs. In their second film together, then-real-life paramours Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone still can’t strike sparks onscreen: He’s too mopey, she’s trapped in the role of someone patiently waiting for her boyfriend to chill. As the villains, Jamie Foxx and Dane DeHaan are trapped in Z-movie outfits and motivations — Foxx’s Max Diillon is a Spidey fan transformed by an eel attack, DeHaan’s Harry Osborn is basically a vampire.

But there’s a lush quality to The Amazing Spider-Man 2. It’s shot on 35 mm in real New York locations, with an unexpectedly swagger-y score (by Hans Zimmer, Pharrell Williams, and a supergroup called “the Magnificent Six.”) I mean this as a compliment and a critique: This is the most GIFable Spider-Man movie, great in 16-frame segments, lacking all the connective material that used to be what movies were. —D.F.

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

A botch job of oppositional motivations practically disowned by its own director, the messiest Spider-Man movie is a near-constant tonal misfire, simultaneously more serious than its predecessors and more willfully goofy. The misfires are many — Topher Grace‘s Eddie Brock and Bryce Dallas Howard‘s Gwen Stacy seem painfully wedged in as fan service, and it’s frequently difficult to tell the difference between what’s purposefully silly and what’s just accidentally funny.

But Raimi’s visual imagination reaches a new peak with Sandman (Thomas Haden Church). And there’s an endearingly shaggy side to this film, all the more shocking given its then-record cost. James Franco officially enters his weird phase when he swears the pie is “so good.” For no obvious reason, Raimi fits in a few dance numbers. At the center of this indifferent strangeness, Kirsten Dunst gives her best performance in the series, as Mary Jane falls from Broadway heights to lounge-singing lows. Spider-Man 3 isn’t a good movie, but it’s a real movie. —D.F.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

The second installment in a Spider-Man film series is often key to its legacy, either expanding the themes of the original film (2004’s Spider-Man 2) or doubling down on its worst tendencies (The Amazing Spider-Man 2). The second Spider-Man movie of the Tom Holland era falls somewhere in the middle, offering a great villain and fun character dynamics but also having to carry the burden of being tied to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its ever-evolving saga.

The chemistry between Holland’s Peter Parker, Zendaya‘s MJ, and the rest of his high school classmates makes this a good hangout/vacation film, and Jake Gyllenhaal is exceedingly well cast as a guy Peter (and the audience) wants to trust but there’s just something slightly off. Though somewhat inessential, Far From Home is a fun diversion with a killer mid-credits sequence that beautifully sets up the third film. —Kevin Jacobsen

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

The first Spidey film of the MCU era iterates off the problems and solutions of past films, adding back all the comedy that the Amazing films lost and refocusing Peter’s adventures with outer-borough particularity. Tom Holland’s Peter has a favorite bodega, chases bad guys through backyards, and struggles to mix superhero-ing with the academic decathlon. Homecoming‘s been praised as a genuine high school movie, which is only half-true; it’s also a weird exercise in MCU world-building, depending on regular once-per-half-hour check-ins from Robert Downey Jr.‘s Tony Stark.

This last bit is either what you love about Homecoming or the most annoying part of the movie. It seems to me that all the Marvel stuff gets in the film’s way — that what could have been a sensitive human comedy about Spider-Man’s neighborhood and his high school keeps getting hijacked by the broader necessities of continuity. (The last and worst action scene literally takes place on a plane carrying detritus from 2012’s The Avengers.) But the cast of characters at Spidey’s high school is an all-time ensemble. And it sets the stage for a brilliant sequel! Which is teased in a post-credits scene that plays out almost exactly like the post-credits scene from the first Amazing Spider-Man. Spider-Man: Brand New Day (2026)

Picking up four years after the end of No Way Home, which left Holland’s Peter in his darkest place yet, his fourth standalone outing seems to delight in the changed world in which the hero finds himself. He has virtually no one to lean on: His beloved aunt (Marisa Tomei) is gone, and everyone who knew him has forgotten about him. All he has is his trusty suit, a rundown apartment, and a New York full of small-time bad guys who need to be webbed up. It is perhaps the closest the MCU’s iteration of the hero has ever come to classic Spider-Man, and under the direction of Destin Daniel Cretton (Shang-Chi), the film injects fresh energy into the titular character and the wider MCU.

Brand New Day isn’t without its hiccups. Like Holland’s other solo movies, it is chock-full of connections to the expanded universe, and while some are successful — Jon Bernthal’s Punisher makes a great new partner for Peter — others only seem to balloon the runtime. Everyone loves a Hulk appearance, but how essential is his action sequence, really? Nevertheless, the movie manages to keep everything grounded in Peter’s arc, which finds him contending with mutating DNA and confronting what it means to be a superhero all on his own. Through moving relationships with an MJ (Zendaya) who doesn’t know him and Sadie Sink’s mysterious (but not really) new character, Holland gets the chance to take his Peter to new places, and it’s a thrill to watch. —Rachel LaBonte

Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)

Even if it was one of the worst-kept secrets in Hollywood, the catharsis of witnessing all three live-action Spider-Mans together was pure ecstasy. By this point in the Tom Holland era, the idea of the multiverse had been introduced and popularized — hell, the Spider-Man franchise already centered it in Into the Spider-Verse three years prior. Still, No Way Home felt like a satisfying continuation of Holland’s version of Peter Parker and his existential crisis as well as pure fan service to celebrate nearly 20 years of Spider-Man on the big screen.

The way the film gets to that epic crossover moment is a little messy — Peter’s intentions of trying to rehabilitate invading villains like Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and the Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe) are noble but sadly naïve in a frustrating way. Plus, with so many heroes and villains in the mix, it’s inevitable for this to feel overstuffed. But the sheer emotion of Holland’s performance as he bears the weight of the world on his shoulders makes this one of the more effective executions of the “With great power comes great responsibility” through-line. —K.J.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)

Five years after releasing the boundary-pushing, Oscar-winning Into the Spider-Verse, Sony Pictures Animation doubled down on the eye-popping visuals and mind-bending multiverse-jumping with this sequel. Across the Spider-Verse smartly elevates Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) to essentially colead status as she and Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) struggle with the weight of the impact of their Spidey responsibilities on their respective personal lives. The creative decision to have Gwen narrate the opening is a bold step in the right direction as the sequel builds upon the themes of the first film in exploring what it means to be a Spider-Man (or Woman).

Like its predecessor, we soon find ourselves hurtling across the Spider-Verse as Miles and Gwen try to hunt down the Spot (Jason Schwartzman), whose mutable inkblot design is one of the best examples of what makes the Spidey world so perfect for animation. The world-building and set pieces are on a whole other level here, and while the lack of resolution ultimately makes this feel incomplete, the horror of the ending as Miles realizes he’s, well, far from home, is incredibly tantalizing. —K.J.

Spider-Man (2002)

History judges Sam Raimi’s first film for the janky special effects and the first (of three!) terrible Green Goblin outfits, but Spider-Man boils over with genre-launching ambition. Like the first X-Men film (2000), it plays in hindsight like an imperfect but fascinating big swing, an attempt to bring all the variable tones of a character’s comic book history together onscreen. Raimi’s impulses as a comedian run smashing into his impulses towards retro melodrama: Spider-Man’s “debut” is like a WWE spoof, and that segues right into the theatrically dramatic death of Uncle Ben (Cliff Robertson).

But the film overflows with childlike wonder, a comic-strip dream of girls next door and nerdy weirdoes growing muscles with puberty. The scene of Spider-Man kissing Mary Jane upside-down in the rain has been oft-imitated but never really bettered — it’s still the series’ high point for romance and weirdness, and it’s a reminder of how strange superhero movies were when superhero plots still swirled around secret identities. (Late in this first film, Peter finds himself at two different points of a romantic triangle.)

Willem Dafoe’s Norman Osborn has all the defining problems of the franchise’s villains — he seems fully unstable from the very beginning. But he gets a great exit. And don’t underrate how perfectly this first film captures something about Spider-Man’s central tragedy. By the end of the film, his best friend hates Spider-Man but loves Peter, and Mary Jane loves Peter but they can’t be together because of Spider-Man. Superpowers have rarely felt less empowering. Spider-Man practically invented the modern-day superhero movie, but it’s also a downbeat road not taken. —D.F.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)

The first animated Spider-Man feature has a rollicking high energy — and a feeling of newness remarkable in a franchise as old as this century. The wild visuals bring a psychedelic new kineticism to the web-swinging, and teenage Miles Morales is a compellingly modern hero, a sweetly arty Brooklyn kid fish-out-of-watering through a fancy prep school.

But Into the Spider-Verse is a new-model superhero movie, which means the story of Miles Morales is also the story of Peter Parker (Jake Johnson), a shaggy older version of the familiar hero, struggling through a half-baked midlife crisis. And the movie’s also a super-teaming of the whole Spider-Man concept, clashing infinite earths of Spider-People together into a banter-y arachnoid squad. The sheer muchness means some key characters get short-shrift. We see more of Gwen in the sequel; I hope we never see Liev Schreiber‘s Kingpin again. Spider-Verse is a fun ride with a wacky porcine Spider-Ham, but you’re left with the eerie feeling that Sony constructed this film as a Trojan Horse: Here’s the origin story for a new Spider-Man that’s really a redemption saga for the old Spider-Man. —D.F.

Spider-Man 2 (2004)

There’s a new theory brewing that superhero films are best when they pick a tone, whether it’s grimdark DC serious or sitcom Marvel funny. A film like Logan (2017) earns raves for its heavy-man profundity (with megaviolence!), while a lighthearted romp like Homecoming gets extra credit for turning everything into a cameo-comedian laugh line.

And then there’s Spider-Man 2, a sumptuously silly-sweet adventure that riffs on “mad-scientist” horror, Old New York noir, and some of the high tropes of the rom-com era. Peter delivers pizza through an anti-realistic Manhattan, full of downtown elevated trains, sinking waterfront warehouses, and moody Gothic penthouses where a sad-sack billionaire heir plots vengeance. There’s a chainsaw, and there’s a montage set to “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ on My Head.” Spider-Man suffers something like an existential crisis, and he’s passed around unconscious by New Yorkers arms spread out like a Christ figure. Mary Jane gets engaged to an astronaut, and she leaves him at the altar.

It’s a rollicking film, the best evidence that Raimi’s mash of tones can produce genuine cinematic wonder. Alfred Molina doesn’t solve this franchise’s villain problem — the tentacles made him evil? — but his Doctor Octopus is a great visual creation, his squiggling robot arms as grotesque as anything in a Guillermo del Toro film. And this is Tobey Maguire‘s best showcase: The Peter we find in this movie is both a sincere nerd and a desperate man, trying to hold off his better angels in an attempt to live a normal life. You can’t really reduce Spider-Man2‘s achievement; there are moments that approach spoofdom and moments of high drama. At its core, it’s a pure cinematic romance, unbounded by the necessities of cinematic universes, or fandoms, or big plans for Phase 4. —D.F.

Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling are in la la land over their family’s newest addition.

The Hitch actress revealed that she and the La La Land star—who share daughters Esmeralda, 11, and Amada, 10, together—welcomed a new dog named Charlie into their home.

“Introducing Charlie, our newest member of our familia,” Mendes wrote on Instagram July 31 alongside sweet snaps with their new pup. “We’re in love! Gracias to @californiadoodlerescues.”

In one adorable photo, Mendes—donning a blue sundress—smiled at Charlie while she gave him scratches behind his ears as the two sat in a lush field.

In another, the 52-year-old watched as Charlie—a brown doodle—played with Mendes and Gosling’s eldest dog Magic.

And don’t go asking the Holy Motors actress which of her dogs is the goodest boy. After all, she also shared a video giving both pups some love as she scratched their backs before hugging Charlie.

And California Doodle Rescue was just as thrilled about the couple’s new fur baby, commenting, “Congratulations!!!! They have the best parents in town!!!!.”
