- John Travolta debuted a striking new look at the Cannes Film Festival, which he attended to promote his directorial debut, *Propeller One-Way Night Coach.*

- Travolta turned heads for his dapper, black-and-white formal wear, dark, closely-cropped beard, and in particular an assortment of slouching berets.

- "I said, 'I'm a director this time. You're an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director,'" Travolta revealed.

John Travolta looked at the president of the Cannes Film Festival and said, "I want to make history." And that's what this is.

The eternal *Saturday Night Fever** *star made a somewhat rare public appearance at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend to debut his first-ever film in the role of director: the jetsetting family film *Propeller One-Way Night Coach*. But he debuted something else that's caught even more attention — a striking new look consisting of a dark, close-cropped beard, thin-rimmed, circular spectacles, and a series of slouching berets.

The buzz around Travolta's new aesthetic has rivaled some of the most hyped premieres of the eminent film festival, which tapped acclaimed auteurs like Cristian Mungiu, Pedro Almodóvar, and Ryusuke Hamaguchi for its main Competition. On Monday, the actor-turned-director finally offered an explanation for the beret seen 'round the world.

"I've been around for over 50 years doing movies, but I can't tell, when I look back, the difference between the events," Travolta told CNN's Leah Dolan. So he endeavored to make his Cannes 2026 fits unforgettable.

"I said, 'I'm a director this time. You're an actor, play the part of a director, look like an old-school director,'" he explained. "So I looked up pictures from the '20, '30s, '40s, '50, '60s, and the old-school directors wore berets, and the glasses, and I thought, 'That's what I'm doing. I'm doing an homage to being a director, so I'm going to play the part of being a director.'"

Problem solved. Now, when Travolta looks back on this time, "I'll know — 'Oh, that was *Propeller One-Way Night Coach*, that was Cannes, that's when I won the Palme d'Or,' and I'll have a vividness of it."

John Travolta gets teary accepting surprise honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes: 'This is beyond the Oscar'

US director, screenwriter and writer John Travolta receives an honourary lifetime achievement Palm d'Or award prior to the screening of the film "Propeller One-Way Night Coach" at the 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival in Cannes, southern France on May 15, 2026.

Travolta is not actually in contention for the prestigious Palme d'Or, which Mungiu, Almodóvar, Hamaguchi, and 19 others are vying for with films in Competition. *Propeller One-Way Night Coach *is playing in Cannes Premiere, a non-competitive section established in 2021 that's generally seen as a holding pen for films that were 11th hour cuts from Competition, like Rodrigo Sorogoyen's *The Beasts* or Alain Guiraudie's *Misericordia*.

And yet, Travolta has *already won *a Palme d'Or while at Cannes 2026.

On Friday, the festival awarded him with an honorary Palme d'Or, the Cannes equivalent of a lifetime achievement award. Indeed, his work has played an important role at the festival over the years, from 1994's* **Pulp Fiction** *winning the Palme d'Or to 1998's *Primary Colors *playing in the Out of Competition section, to films like *Grease** *and *Saturday Night Fever *recently playing in the repertory "Cinéma de la Plage" section."

"You said this would be a special night, but I didn't know it would mean this," Travolta told festival director Thierry Frémaux after accepting the award. "This is a humbling moment. This is beyond the Oscar."

- *The Mandalorian and Grogu* actor Brendan Wayne is sharing how he brought a bit of his grandfather, John Wayne, to his portrayal of the bounty hunter.

- The actor, who shares the role with Pedro Pascal and Lateef Crowder, tells * *that he wanted to make sure every one of Mando's movements counted.

- "The more I became like my grandfather, the more I became like the samurai that he studied," he said.

*The Mandalorian and Grogu* star Brendan Wayne is sharing how his grandfather, John Wayne, influenced his performance as the titular stoic bounty hunter.

The actor, who physically embodies Mando alongside Pedro Pascal (who voices the character and plays him without the helmet) and Lateef Crowder (who handles the stuntwork), tells * *that he had to learn to be present in a scene to play the heavily armored character on the Emmy-winning *Star Wars* series.

"I had to really learn stillness, and it's really been one of the greatest things I've learned as an actor," Wane says. "For me, that journey, I always fought that because my grandfather was exceptional at being present and radiating whatever [was happening around him]. John Ford loved to say to him, 'The less I give you, Duke, the better the movie is going to be.' It sounds like a slight, but it was more about if you just be there, it's as powerful as anything."

A Mandalorian character in armor with a small alien creature sitting beside them

The Mandalorian and Grogu in 'The Mandalorian'.

He found himself bringing a bit of his grandfather's serenity to the character when working with directors Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Deborah Chow, and Rick Famuyiwa on the first three seasons of *The Mandalorian. *

"When they were directing me, the more still I became, the more I became like my grandfather, the more I became like the samurai that he studied," Wayne says. "Every movement had a meaning; you don't waste them. And with samurai, every movement is a kill movement."

Which is exactly how Mando operates, too. "That's Mando. Those are the precepts that he works upon," he notes, "and so to have that trust in yourself that whatever you're living in that moment — if I'm working with Katee [Sackhoff] as Bo-Katan or Emily Swallow — as long as you're present, that's 90 percent of the work."

Jon Favreau debuts new trailer, opening scenes of 'The Mandalorian and Grogu' at CinemaCon

It was also important to Wayne that Mando always appear calm and collected — even when the cameras weren't rolling.

"I would get to set two and a half, three hours early, I'd do my workout, and then I'd go spend an hour at least walking the set, because I never wanted Mando to fall down in front of the crew," he says. "I wanted him to be as smooth as my grandfather, Clint Eastwood, or Yul Brynner in *Westworld*. I wanted him as smooth as could be so that every movement did matter."

As fate would have it, he's not the only member of the Wayne family who's part of the* Star Wars *universe. He told PEOPLE that he was completely unaware, when singing on to play Mando, that his grandfather's voice had been used for the Galactic Empire spy Garindan ezz Zavor in *A New Hope*.

"Back in the day, when we used film, they found the soundtrack on the ground in the editing room," he said. "And they knew it was from *True Grit*. They took his voice [from stock audio], and they did whatever they do, their magic."

But don't worry, Wayne is completely fine with "riding the coattails of my grandfather" when it comes to playing a role in a galaxy far, far away. "I had hoped I might have been able to be the first in this," he teased, "but no, sadly, I was still second.'"

*The Mandalorian and Grogu *is in theaters now.

Donald Trump on Friday said he has decided to skip out on his son's wedding, saying his "love for the United States of America" is keeping him in Washington.

Donald Trump Jr. and Bettina Anderson are expected to hold a small, private wedding ceremony for close family. The ceremony will reportedly be held in the Bahamas, according to CNN.

"While I very much wanted to be with my son, Don Jr., and the newest member of the Trump Family, his soon to be wife, Bettina, circumstances pertaining to Government, and my love for the United States of America, do not allow me to do so," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

"I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House during this important period of time. Congratulations to Don and Bettina!" he continued.

After he made the post announcing he would not attend, Turmp jetted off for Upstate New York to stump for Rep. Jr.'s wedding "not good timing" for Trump

Trump previously said he would try to make his eldest son's wedding but added that "it is not good timing for me."

“He’d like me to go, but it’s going to be just a small little private affair, and I’m going to try and make it,” Trump told reporters. "I’m in the midst — I said, you know, this is not good timing for me. I have a thing called Iran and other things. That’s one I can’t win on.”

The president said he'd be attacked by the media regardless of what decision he made.

“That’s one I can’t win on. If I do attend, I get killed. If I don’t attend, I get killed,” he said.

Trump Jr.'s siblings are expected to attend the ceremony.

The wedding will mark Trump Jr.’s second marriage. He was previously married to Vanessa Trump for 12 years before their divorce in 2018. Vanessa Trump is now dating Tiger Woods.

He was also previously engaged to Kimberly Guilfoyle, who is now the U.S. ambassador to Greece and the ex-wife of California Gov. Gavin Newsom, from 2020 to 2024.

CONCORD, N.C. (AP) — NASCAR driver Kyle Busch died Thursday at 41, three days before he was set to run the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Here is what to know:

How did Kyle Busch die?

At this point, the cause of death has not been released and details remain limited.

What is known is that Busch was testing in the Chevrolet racing simulator in Concord on Wednesday when he became unresponsive and was transported to a hospital in Charlotte, several people familiar with the situation told The on condition of anonymity because details have not been disclosed by Busch’s team or family.

Had Kyle Busch been ill?

Busch was thought to have had a sinus cold While racing May 10 at Watkins Glen, Busch radioed his team requesting a “shot” from a doctor after he finished. Per the TV broadcast, Busch had been struggling with a sinus cold that was exacerbated by the intense G-forces and elevation changes at the New York road course.

It's unclear if that issue had something to do with his death.

Busch did race last weekend and won the Trucks Series race at Dover and finished 17th in the NASCAR All-Star race. That would be his final race.

How good was Kyle Busch?

Busch won 234 races across NASCAR's three national series — more than any driver in history. He won Cup season championships in 2015 and 2019 for Joe Gibbs Racing.

His first championship was particularly impressive. Busch missed the first 11 Cup races of the 2015 season after injuring his foot following a crash in the O'Reilly Auto Parts series opener in Daytona, but came back to win five races to qualify for the playoffs before capturing the title at Homestead.

Will the Coca-Cola 600 be postponed or canceled?

No. NASCAR officials confirmed that the 400-lap race will continue on as planned Sunday night at the 1 1/2-mile track at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Earlier in the day, RCR had announced that Austin Hill would replace Busch in the No. 8 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1.

Does CMS plan to honor Kyle Busch?

Yes, CMS officials said they plan to honor Busch “in some way” this weekend at the Coca-Cola 600, but details were still being ironed out.

Kyle Busch was one of the titans of modern-day NASCAR and one of the finest drivers in the sport’s history. His death Thursday was sudden and shocking, coming just days before one of NASCAR’s crown jewel races, the Coca-Cola 600.

Given Busch’s stature, it’s reasonable to ask whether the race, scheduled for Sunday night, should be postponed to allow time for the sport to grieve. But that’s simply not how NASCAR handles these matters — and, more to the point, not how any driver would want to be honored.

NASCAR CEO Steve O’Donnell spoke to the media late Friday afternoon, and he began by describing Busch as “an American badass behind the wheel.” He gave a personal resonance to Busch’s death when he characterized NASCAR as a weekly “family reunion.” And he quickly dispelled any thought about postponing or canceling the Coca-Cola 600 because of Busch’s death.

“What minimal conversations did take place between (Richard Childress Racing), ourselves, family, it was, Kyle Busch would probably be pretty pissed off if we didn't race,” O’Donnell said. “So we're going to honor his memory and make sure people know what he was all about.”

Putting aside the logistical concerns of postponing a massive event with just 48 hours notice, NASCAR doesn’t cancel races because of drivers’ deaths, simply because that’s not the racer’s credo. It’s a holdover from the days when death on the track was far more common than today; you don’t slow down for death, no matter who it is. You just keep racing.

When Dale Earnhardt died in 2001 on the final lap of the Daytona 500, a tearful sport gathered the very next week at Rockingham to race. Rookie Kevin Harvick, driving Earnhardt’s car with the No. 29 in place of Earnhardt’s famous No. 3, finished 14th. Two weeks after that, Harvick won in Atlanta, and held up three fingers as he circled the track in celebration.

Austin Hill, who’s never driven more than five Cup-level races in a season and has only one top-10 to his name, has the unenviable task of taking over for Busch. Hill will drive the No. 33; Richard Childress Racing has already indicated it will reserve Busch’s No. 8 until his son Brexton is ready to take it. Other honors throughout the weekend, both at the Coca-Cola 600 and the Indy 500, will pay tribute to Kyle Busch.

“The family reunions week to week are just not going to be the same without him,” O’Donnell said, “but we're going to do our damn best to continue his legacy and support his family.”

Jim Furyk’s place in the game’s lore was sealed in the summer of 2016, when he authored one of the most remarkable rounds the PGA Tour has ever seen — a 12‑under 58 at the Travelers Championship. In a sport that had long treated 59 as an almost mythical barrier, Furyk didn’t just break it; he blew past it, becoming the first to venture into even rarer territory and earning a fitting distinction as golf’s “Mr. 58.”

The performance carried added weight given what had come before. Only six players had ever posted a 59 on Tour at that point — a club Furyk had already joined with a second‑round 59 at the 2013 BMW Championship. With that earlier feat and his record‑setting 58, Furyk became the first player in PGA Tour history to record multiple sub‑60 rounds, a dual achievement that stands as one of the sport’s most enduring benchmarks of scoring brilliance.

Jim Furyk celebrates after shooting a record-setting 58 during the final round of the Travelers Championship at TCP River Highlands on August 7, 2016.

There are a total of 14 rounds of 59 in the history of the PGA Tour, with the first coming when Al Geiberger turned the trick in 1977 at the Memphis Classic.

The most recent player to do so was Jake Knapp at the 2025 Cognizant Classic.
