On The Voice soundstage, anything is possible.
At least that’s how it’s felt the countless times I’ve stepped inside for tapings of blind auditions, surprise performances and more. Now in my fourth year covering the singing competition show, I was invited back for a dream interview with the season 30 coaches for PEOPLE’s fall TV digital cover.
On July 21, I walked past the audience waiting outside the Universal Studio lot and found our crew. The coaches were filming the Battles, which is when two contestants on the same team are paired together. Traditionally, after each performance, the coach can only keep one.

When it was time for the interview, Adam Levine, Queen Latifah, Kelly Clarkson and Riley Green were ushered in one after the other — each with a team of publicists, makeup artists and stylists. Clarkson, 44, and Latifah, 56, took their chairs and got finishing makeup touches as they chatted with the people around them, then kindly introduced themselves to me.
The Maroon 5 frontman, 47, brought the energy as he walked around the stage drinking a Celsius. Green, 37, walked straight to his chair. “We’ve met before!” he said to me when he looked up. (It’s true — I interviewed him when he was starring on the Yellowstone spinoff Marshals.)
When the cameras started rolling, it was all quiet on set and the coaches bounced off each other as I ran through my questions.

Green and Levine playfully jabbed at one another while praising Latifah for being impossible to roast (she said she feels like the “delicious meat” sandwiched between the two) — and Clarkson drew emotional and thoughtful responses from her fellow coaches when they were getting too silly.

“This what I get to do at work every day. What a blessing,” said Latifah.
Once our interview time was up, our producer called a wrap, and everyone cheered. The coaches sprung out of their chairs and thanked me for my time as they were rushed backstage. In just a few moments the audience would be let in for filming, so the stage managers were quick to get the set ready for another episode.
One week later, on July 27, I return to the stage to watch their photoshoot for our cover. It was the same day they filmed the fan-favorite coaches’ performance, which usually airs during the season premiere. From the distance, their powerful vocals were heard as they did numerous takes — aiming to capture the perfect one that will make the cut.
In true Voice fashion, the coaches wasted no time and were quickly ushered over to our set up after performing. They were each told where to stand (Clarkson initially had a stool, but politely vetoed it) and they locked in to the photos like musical Avengers. In between takes, Latifah broke out a few dance moves and Levine turned around to grab Green by the shoulders. He yelled out, “I love this guy!”
Before the last take, the photographer called me up to take a photo with the group and Clarkson insisted I stand in the middle. And just like that, in less than 15 minutes, we got the shots, some video—and the A-list coaches were back on their way.
The Voice premieres Sept. 21 on NBC.
