Luke Evans is looking back at his connection with late *Rocky Horror Picture Show** *star Tim Curry.

During a recent visit to **’s studio at the Toronto International Film Festival on Friday, the Tony-nominated actor revealed that the fellow Dr. Frank-N-Furter responded to a heartfelt letter that he sent him just before his death at age 80.

“He was very appreciative,” Evans recalled. “I think he was very sick when he got the letter — he was struggling a lot — and I’ve spoken to his publisher since. He struggled to speak and talk, so I think he was really in a bad place, but what a legacy.”

Curry, who originated the role of the maniacal scientist onstage and starred in its 1975 film adaptation, died of coronary artery disease on Aug. 26. A history of stroke and kidney cancer were also disclosed as additional conditions, but not listed as the underlying cause.

Evans noted that he felt a particularly “deep connection” to Curry because he’d recently completed his own Tony-nominated stint as Dr. Frank-N-Furter in the *Rocky Horror Show* on Broadway.

“What was very strange was the day that he did die, the news — of all the incredible things he did, and he did many incredible, iconic roles — it always started with the same person: Frank-N-Furter,” he continued. “And I had just played him, so there was this real deep connection that I had, even though I’d never met the man. It was a strange, beautiful, tragic way to end my New York experience, but I’ll never forget it.”

Evans shared his letter to Curry in an Instagram post following the actor’s death. “Although we’ve never met, you’ve been part of this journey from the very beginning,” he wrote in part. “Every actor who puts on Frank inevitably walks into a conversation that started with you, and I’ve felt that every single night.”

The *Beauty and the Beast* star also took a moment to praise Curry’s “brave” performance as Frank-N-Furter while visiting EW’s studio.

“When it came out 53 years ago, it gave people a pass to feel free and to look at yourself in a different way, not be scared, and feel freedom and liberation,” he explained. “And that film, I believe, has only resonated for so many generations — or half a century — because of his performance.”

In doing so, Evans added that Curry “gave a voice to people that may not have understood who they were or understood their identity” or how to be their authentic self.

“Although the show is a ridiculous alien dressed like a man who wears women’s clothing, he saw that it was okay and his message was to not dream it, but be it,” he continued. “And Tim has such a resonant voice that he could read the Yellow Pages, and you’d just listen, and when he says these wonderful words that have sort of transcended every generation, it means something to everyone.”

He concluded, “It’s about being happy, and there’s nothing wrong with being different and unique and special.”
