Thomas D’Alesandro III, a former mayor of Baltimore and the brother of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, died on Sunday at the age of 90.
The Baltimore Sun reported that D’Alesandro died in his North Baltimore house of problems from a stroke.
Affectionately referred to as “Young Tommy,” D’Alesandro served as Baltimore’s mayor for one time period, from 1967 to 1971. He led the city in the course of the April 1968 riots after Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination, and helped open new faculties and police headquarters.
“My husband Paul and our whole household are devastated by the loss of our patriarch, my beloved brother,” Pelosi stated in a statement launched by her workplace.
She remembered her brother as “the finest public servant” she knew, somebody whose management was “a tribute to the Catholic values with which we have been raised” and somebody who devoted his life to civil rights.
His presence, Pelosi stated, “radiated hope” during occasions of strife.
“All his life, Tommy worked on the aspect of the angels. Now, he is with them,” she stated.
D’Alesandro is survived by his spouse, Margaret; his youngsters, Thomas, Dominic, Nicholas, Patricia and Gregory; and his grandchildren, “whom he adored,” Pelosi stated.
His passing comes just days after the dying of Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings, the longtime Maryland lawmaker whom Pelosi called her “brother in Baltimore.”
