The State Department will resume “targeted” overseas assistance for Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, in accordance with an announcement Wednesday.
The move comes after President Donald Trump in March ordered a freeze on lots of of tens of millions in improvement and security funding for the Central American nations. At the time, Trump stated the nations hadn’t slowed adequately the outflow of migrants towards the U.S.
“Because of the president’s coverage and to the response from these nations, we're seeing great progress,” Secretary of State Mike Pompeo stated in a written assertion Wednesday. “To allow further progress in these nations’ efforts, some focused Department of State and USAID funding will resume at this time.”
The State Department did not specify the amount of funds that would transfer ahead. The Washington Examiner reported Tuesday that the administration would resume approximately $150 million in funding, a figure confirmed by a congressional aide.
Since Trump halted the overseas help, the U.S. has negotiated asylum agreements with the three Northern Triangle nations that might require these nations to simply accept asylum seekers who move via their territory. Each of the deals will require further steps to grow to be efficient.
Rep. Eliot Engel (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Home Overseas Affairs Committee, criticized the original funding stoppage as “counterproductive"in a response to State’s announcement.
