Republicans split with Trump on celebrating China

President Donald Trump congratulated the Individuals’s Republic of China for its 70th anniversary Tuesday morning. Senate Republicans have been in no mood to rejoice.

Senate Majority Chief Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) compared China beneath President Xi Jinping to a “trendy model of Maoist China” and criticized the government for violence towards pro-democracy protesters in Hong Kong and putting Uighurs — a predominantly Muslim ethnic minority group — in internment camps.

Sen. Mitt Romney (R-Utah) warned that “an authoritarian China is probably the only biggest menace to freedom across the world,” whereas Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) emphasised that the 70th anniversary of communist rule was no cause for celebration but “a day to remind ourselves of the horrors inflicted on the Chinese individuals over this time.”

Sen. Ben Sasse (R-Neb.) stated that the American individuals stand with the “freedom-seekers in Hong Kong” and Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) stated the Chinese communist celebration has waged “financial warfare towards Missourians by means of foreign money manipulation and tariffs concentrating on our farmers.”

Within the House, GOP conference chairwoman Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) and Rep. Mike Gallagher (R-Wis.) lambasted the Chinese language authorities's “appalling document of repression."

Those statements stood in stark distinction to the president’s remarks on Twitter.

“Congratulations to President Xi and the Chinese individuals on the 70th Anniversary of the Individuals’s Republic of China!,” Trump tweeted.
