Pelosi to meet with Venezuelan exiles in Florida

TALLAHASSEE — Home Speaker Nancy Pelosi and South Florida Democrats plan to satisfy with Venezuelan exiles this week amid an ongoing stalemate in Congress over whether or not to supply protections to those who fled the South American country.

Democrats have scheduled a discussion board on Thursday in Weston, a city that has seen an influx of Venezuelans fleeing their country during an financial collapse that started underneath former President Hugo Chávez and has continued underneath President Nicolás Maduro.

The Trump administration has taken a hard line towards the Maduro regime and backed opposition leader Juan Guaidó, but Maduro has remained in power.

Florida is house to at the very least 190,000 Venezuelans and the economic disaster in that country reverberates loudly in South Florida. Cuban People see parallels between what has occurred underneath socialist rule in Venezuela and beneath communism in Cuba.

“In South Florida, democracy in Venezuela is an area concern,” stated Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell, a South Florida Democrat who plans to attend the forum with Pelosi.

An effort to supply immigration protections to Venezuelan immigrants has slowed down as a consequence of partisan infighting in Congress.

President Donald Trump has been urged by Florida leaders to defend Venezuelans from deportation but he has taken no action. The House in July handed a bill authorizing short-term protected standing to Venezuelans, but the measure has not moved within the Senate.

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) last week provided an alternate that may have granted protections to Venezuelans and overhauled the program, but Democrats blocked the measure. Scott accused Democrats of using the “Venezuelan group as a political prop as an alternative of working with us to find a answer.”

Democrats insist their efforts are critical.

“We can't champion Venezuelans in Venezuela, then ignore them here,” Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Fla.) stated in a press release. “Speaker Pelosi led the House in passing robust measures to guard Venezuelans, right here and at house. The Speaker and my Home colleagues are wanting to strategize with Venezuelans in Florida on the best way to proceed these efforts.”

Wasserman Schultz and Mucarsel-Powell are scheduled to attend the discussion board, along with Reps. Donna Shalala (D-Fla.) and Albio Sires (D-N.J.), chairman of the Western Hemisphere subcommittee of the Home Overseas Affairs Committee, and Venezuelan Ambassador Carlos Vecchio.

Pelosi is heading to Florida the same day that President Donald Trump is scheduled to debate Medicare at The Villages, a sprawling central Florida retirement group and Republican stronghold.
