Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stated Monday that he was “gravely involved” concerning the U.S. response to the escalating battle in Syria.
In a press release, McConnell pledged to work towards avoiding “a strategic calamity” when the Senate returns this week and warned that Turkey’s latest assaults on Kurdish allies in Syria was hurting progress within the battle towards the Islamic State.
McConnell’s remarks come after President Donald Trump determined to withdraw U.S. forces from northern Syria — a transfer that has prompted bipartisan backlash.
“Abandoning this battle now and withdrawing U.S. forces from Syria would re-create the very circumstances that we've got worked onerous to destroy and invite the resurgence of ISIS,” McConnell stated. “And such a withdrawal would also create a broader energy vacuum in Syria that will probably be exploited by Iran and Russia, a catastrophic end result for america’ strategic pursuits.”
Following Trump’s announcement to withdraw U.S. troops from the area, Turkey went into northeastern Syria, a Kurdish-occupied region.
