Sen. Bernie Sanders’ campaign is struggling. Former Vice President Joe Biden has stalled in the polls, coping with unfavourable coverage of his son’s enterprise dealings. Sen. Elizabeth Warren has risen to a tie for first. And Sen. Kamala Harris and Mayor Pete Buttigieg are rallying for relevance.
If tonight’s Democratic presidential debate in Ohio have been typical, these storylines can be enough. However this isn’t like any televised debate in current memory.
An unwieldy 12 candidates will stand onstage for 3 hours, lots of them clinging to single digits in the polls after months of failing to considerably move the needle of public opinion.
And there are two wildcards: Billionaire Tom Steyer makes his first appearance tonight on a presidential debate stage and Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, who sent Harris’s campaign right into a tailspin after trashing her legal justice report onstage in August, makes her return.
