The Whisper Man’s dramatic conclusion suggests the potential of something otherworldly
Based on the 2019 novel of the same name by Alex North, Netflix’s thriller The Whisper Man centers around a recently widowed father, Tom (Adam Scott), who moves into a new home with his son Jake (Acston Luca Porto), hoping for a fresh start after his wife’s death.
But Jake is traumatized after losing his mother and has become a loner who struggles socially. He’s also developed an intense bond with an imaginary friend he calls the Girl in the Blue Sweater.
Shortly after moving in, things go horribly wrong. Tom’s estranged father, Pete (Robert De Niro), is a retired detective who gained prominence decades ago for catching an elusive child rapist and murderer known as The Whisper Man. But someone has started killing again, and they’re following the same signatures as The Whisper Man, mailing the media distressing cassette tapes in which he interviews the children he’s about to kill.
Even worse, strange things are happening at home. Tom encounters a man who has snuck into his basement, and one night he sees Jake talking to someone through the front door’s mail slot. A few nights later, the unthinkable happens and Jake disappears. Frightened that his son might be the Whisper Man’s newest victim, Tom works with his father and another detective, Amanda Beck (Michelle Monaghan), to find out what’s happened to his son.
But with the original Whisper Man, Frank Carter (Michael Keaton), behind bars, the investigators have to start from scratch and piece together who has resumed the killings and why. Read on to discover how The Whisper Man ends.
What happens leading up to the finale of The Whisper Man?

Throughout the investigation, two important clues are revealed that help investigators piece together what’s happening. The first is that they learn a true crime addict, Norman Collins (Hamish Linklater), has been helping Frank communicate with someone in the outside world.
Then, during a prison visit, Frank reveals to Amanda that he has a wife and son and that his wife helped leak information to Pete years ago that led to his capture.
But something catches Amanda’s attention. Frank drops numerous references about the relationship between a father and son. Later, while questioning Norman about his obsession with Frank, Amanda notices that he also seems to purposefully make cryptic comments about fathers and sons.
This tips her off that there could be a connection; maybe Tom’s son was directly targeted because his father caught Frank. She also deduces that the person who resumed the killings might be Frank’s son.
Who is the new Whisper Man?
Amanda and a team of detectives canvass the town to question any men who meet the profiling criteria for Frank’s son. Meanwhile, Pete heads to the prison to try to negotiate with Frank because of their history.
Frank was routinely sexually and physically abused by his father and had internalized a need for power and revenge by wanting to sexually and physically abuse his own son. But Frank’s wife protected his son from him, so instead he began abusing and murdering other children. Pete tells Frank that if he can give him info on his son, he’ll make sure his son is sent to the same prison so Frank can finally do what he’s always wanted. Frank agrees.

At the same time, Amanda arrives at the door of a man who introduces himself as George, but his demeanor is off, and she suspects something isn’t right, so she keeps the conversation going.
As Amanda chats with George, a photo comes through on her phone showing an image of Frank Jr., Frank’s son and the new Whisper Man killer. It’s identical to George.
A chase begins through the house while Jake is locked in a room upstairs. The Girl in the Blue Sweater tells Jake to scream, so he does, alerting Amanda that he’s in the house. But right as she opens the door, Frank Jr. comes from behind and stabs her. He takes Jake and escapes.
Are they able to stop the Whisper Man?

In an attempt to complete his family’s revenge, Frank Jr. drives Jake back to the house his family just moved into, hoping to kill him and hide his body in the basement. But Pete and Tom are already on their way there. They confront Frank Jr. and another chase begins.
Pete is fatally stabbed, but before he dies, he tells Jake to run.
Jake runs to the attic, but is closely followed by Frank Jr., who himself is being chased by Tom. Once in the attic, Frank Jr. makes his way to Jake, but he steps on a deteriorating floorboard and falls through, landing on the stairwell below and falling down it.
How does The Whisper Man end?
At the end of the movie, Frank Jr. is seen in a prison cell. A guard arrives and opens the door, and his father walks in. “Skin to skin, like they said in the hospital,” Frank Sr. tells his son. “To bond you to me.” He then strangles his son to death.
The scene then cuts to Tom looking through old photos of his wife. As he flips through them, he finds one of his wife as a teenager wearing a big blue sweater, and she looks identical to Jake’s imaginary friend that the audience has seen. He stares at the photo in disbelief, then looks out the window.
Who is the Girl in the Blue Sweater?

While the film never directly brands itself as a supernatural thriller, it’s safe to assume that the Girl in the Blue Sweater is actually a younger version of Jake’s mom protecting him.
Audiences see the girl numerous times throughout the film, including in third-person scenes that also involve Jake’s dad, suggesting that the girl isn’t just in his imagination.
Plus, she gives Jake information that an imaginary friend couldn’t, like that a child, one of the original Whisper Man’s victims, is buried in the basement.
