John Ford was the name behind some of the most iconic western movies.
The legendary director worked in Hollywood for more than five decades, winning four Academy Awards for Best Director along the way. He also helped define the Western genre with movies including Stagecoach, My Darling Clementine, The Searchers, and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance.
But one of Ford’s own favorites isn’t necessarily the first title that comes to mind when discussing his best work.
Released in 1950, Wagon Master was recently named one of the greatest Westerns of all time by StudioBinder, which placed the movie at No. 50 on its new ranking. The site notes that Ford himself considered it one of his favorite films.
That’s notable for another reason: Wagon Master is currently Ford’s highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes.
John Ford Considered ‘Wagon Master’ One of His Best
The movie follows a group of Mormon settlers traveling through the Utah Territory toward the San Juan River valley.
After being expelled from a town because of their religious beliefs, the settlers hire two drifters to guide their wagon train through the unforgiving desert. The journey quickly becomes more complicated as the group encounters a collection of unexpected characters and increasingly dangerous obstacles.

It’s a classic Western setup, but Wagon Master isn’t quite as interested in the usual shootouts and showdowns that define the genre.
Instead, Ford focuses on the journey itself and the people making it.
StudioBinder describes the movie as a favorite of Ford’s and notes that while it wasn’t an immediate success compared with some of his other Westerns, later critics have largely agreed with the director’s own assessment of the film.
‘Wagon Master’ Has Become a Critical Favorite
Wagon Master currently sits at the top of Ford’s Rotten Tomatoes rankings, ahead of some of the movies that are much more commonly associated with his name.
That’s not to say the movie has completely escaped the shadow of his other Westerns.
The Searchers, released six years later, is often considered Ford’s definitive Western and has been repeatedly cited as one of the greatest western movies ever made. Stagecoach helped establish John Wayne as a major star, while My Darling Clementine remains one of the director’s most acclaimed takes on the Old West.
Wagon Master is a very different kind of film, which is probably what makes it stand out.
