Jimmy Kimmel and his wife got candid about telling their children that their father almost lost his job.

The late-night host and his wife, Molly McNearey, reflected on the moment Jimmy Kimmel Live was temporarily suspended by ABC on Dax Shepard's podcast Armchair Expert. Almost a year ago, in September 2025, Kimmel made comments about the killing of Charlie Kirk that led to a right-wing-led campaign to shut down the show.

McNearey explained on the podcast that she had to tell their two children—Jane, 12, and Billy, 9—about the suspension when their eldest child brought it up. "We said we had to explain what was going on because there were helicopters and noise outside our house, and also they were still in school, and this was becoming a very huge story,” McNearey said.

"We didn’t know how big it would be, and we didn’t know if the kids were going to hear about it at school," McNearey continued. "So we said the show has been canceled for a little bit. And Jane said, ‘Is this Donald Trump’s fault?’"

She said she told her daughter the answer was yes and then explained to Shepard, "I said to Jimmy the other day, I’m like, ‘What a wild childhood for these kids to know that the president of the United States doesn’t like their father.’ I mean, that’s not a great feeling, but it’s also kind of funny.”

Shepard chimed in to say it was like "a feather in your cap" to have the president hate you. Kimmel then added, "I don’t know if they understand that he’s not like a movie villain or a TV villain, you know, in a way he is. He’s like a cartoon character."

"They're probably having a hard time taking him seriously," Shepard said. Kimmel agreed, saying his two children have never experienced a "normal president" and could think that the president is "interchangeable with Dr. Evil."

After Kirk, a conservative podcaster, was shot and killed, Kimmel commented on the situation during his monologue at the time. "We had some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it,” he said.

The comment led to Donald Trump and other Republicans slamming Kimmel for his comment, and ABC suspended the show for about a week before reinstating it.
