Democratic presidential hopefuls took to Twitter on Saturday and Sunday to protest the dying of Atatiana Koquice Jefferson, a black lady who was shot and killed by a police officer inside her personal residence early Saturday morning.
Jefferson, 28, lived in Fort Value, Texas. Police arrived on the house after a neighbor referred to as the non-emergency police number, noticing Jefferson’s doors have been open and the lights have been on, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported. Jefferson, who was enjoying video video games together with her nephew, heard a commotion and went to the window — the place she was shot by a white police officer standing outdoors.
In accordance with body camera footage launched by the Fort Value Police Division, the officer raised his flashlight and gun, shouted “put your palms up, show me your arms” and fired a shot within 4 seconds.

On Sunday, they have been joined by fellow candidates including California Sen. Kamala Harris, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and entrepreneur Andrew Yang, whose voices added to growing online fury from many activists — from filmmaker Ava DuVernay to writer and commentator Roxane Gay to best-selling author Angie Thomas.
Sanders called for the Justice Department to research Jefferson’s demise and Yang offered his condolences, tweeting that the officer was in his second yr on the job and “we must do better for our individuals.”
Harris, who has brazenly talked about her id through the marketing campaign as one of many few black candidates operating for president, highlighted that the officer gave Jefferson four seconds to reply before capturing.
“Being Black in your personal residence shouldn't be a dying sentence,” she wrote.
News of Jefferson’s capturing brought up reminiscences in Texas of the 2018 capturing of 26-year-old Botham Jean in his house in Dallas. He was killed by Amber Guyger, an off-duty police officer who stated she mistook his house for her personal in the same building. She was found guilty earlier this month.
