- *Dutton Ranch *season 1 ended on July 3.

- The first season ends on a pair of cliffhangers, setting up the main antagonist for next season.

- The *Yellowstone *spinoff has already been renewed for season 2 — with a new showrunner to boot.

The first season of *Dutton Ranch* didn't disappoint — and there's more where that came from.

Starring Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser as fan-favorites Beth Dutton and Rip Wheeler, respectively, *Dutton Ranch* was blessedly already renewed for a second season ahead of the season 1 finale. That's hardly surprising, given the continuing popularity of Taylor Sheridan's *Yellowstone* universe, which also includes the recent hit *Marshals*. In its first week, *Dutton Ranch* set a new record for biggest series premiere on Paramount+, besting two other Sheridan titles — *The Madison* and *Landman* — with 12.9 million views worldwide.

*Dutton Ranch* follows our favorite ferocious couple as they relocate from Montana to South Texas following a tragic wildfire on their ranch. Joined by adopted son Carter (Finn Little), Beth and Rip open a new operation in the fictional town of Ria Paloma, just north of the border. It's not long before Beth and Rip get involved with Petal 10, the local ranching empire overseen by Beulah Jackson (Annette Bening) and her two sons. Nothing comes easy, of course, and by the end of the first season, we learn that Beulah's operation isn't what it seems.

The *Dutton Ranch* season 1 finale aired on July 3, leaving viewers on a couple of cliffhangers ahead of what's sure to be a high-stakes season 2. Here's everything we know about the second season of the latest *Yellowstone *spinoff.

Will there be a second season of Dutton Ranch?

Paramount+ renewed *Dutton Ranch* for season 2 ahead of the season 1 finale. But when the series returns, there will be a new head honcho — behind the scenes.

Weeks before the first season premiered, creator and showrunner Chad Feehan was fired after reportedly clashing with Hauser on set. Sources also indicated that Sheridan wasn't happy with Feehan's work on the first season of the spinoff. Feehan previously worked with Sheridan on the David Oyelowo-fronted series *Lawmen: Bass Reeves*.

Hauser addressed Feehan's exit in a recent interview with *The Hollywood Reporter*. "Showrunners change all the time," the actor explained. "This business is about adapting. We've been doing this for a long time. Things change. People move on."

Christina Alexandra Voros, who served as director, executive producer, and cinematographer on *Dutton Ranch*, also recently commented on Feehan's departure. "I think Chad did an exceptional job building a world of adversaries for Rip and Beth to come up against in this new chapter of their lives," Voros told ScreenRant, in an interview before the season 2 renewal. "Any speculation about a season 2 is beyond my knowledge. And I'm grateful to him and his team for creating a world for these characters to move into."

After receiving a tip from ranch hand Austin (Sterlin English), Beth and Rip's friend and local veterinarian Everett (Ed Harris) helps them uncover the cold, hard truth about why 10 Petal is so profitable: Beulah and her sons are not only illegally smuggling cattle, they're also using the cattle to bring fentanyl across the border.

When Everett, who recently began a romantic relationship with Beulah, confronts her about the deception, she explains how she got involved with the Mexican cartel in the first place. When Beulah was a teen, she killed a man who sexually assaulted her and enlisted her father's ranch hand, Mariano, to help cover it up. Beulah's dad blamed Mariano for failing to protect his daughter, and the ranch hand returned to Mexico, leaving his infant son, Joaquin, in the care of the Jackson family, who became even more indebted to him when his wife was killed.

Down in Mexico, Mariano got involved with the local cartel, and when droughts threatened to decimate 10 Petal's business some years later, he and Joaquin proposes an unsavory alliance. Beulah claims she's been trying to get out of the cartel business ever since, but that she can't rely on her sons — Rob-Will (Jai Courtney) and Joaquin (Juan Pablo Raba) — to do the right thing.

Enter Mariano (Raoul Max Trujillo), who comes to Rio Paloma when Joaquin reveals that Beulah has chosen Rob-Will to lead 10 Petal. After Rob-Will tells him that Beth and Rip know about the drug operation, Mariano decides he needs to take action by eliminating Beth and Rip and ordering Joaquin to kill his adopted brother.

Mariano sends enforcers to lay siege to Beth and Rip's ranch, but the couple — along with a pair of ranch hands and Everett — emerge victorious, taking one of Mariano's men hostage in the process. Meanwhile, Rob-Will tries to make amends with his daughter, Oreana (Natalie Alyn Lind). After he leaves her room, Oreana hears a gunshot and discovers her father dead in the hall. It's unclear if Joaquin fired the shot, however, as we only see him sitting outside Rob-Will's house with a gun in his car.

The season 1 finale ends with Beth and Rip receiving a call from Mariano, who kidnapped their adopted son, Carter. Season 2's villain has officially arrived.

Who is the showrunner for season 2?

Days before the season 1 finale, ** confirmed that *Dutton Ranch* has a new showrunner: Benjamin Cavell. The *Yellowstone* spinoff appears to be in good hands moving forward with Cavell, who spent six seasons as a writer and producer on *Justified* and whose writing credits additionally include *Homeland* and *Sneaky Pete*.

Cavell was also the co-creator of the Paramount+ miniseries *The Stand*, based on the epic Stephen King novel, and he created the MGM+ series *The Institute*, based on another King novel.

What will season 2 of Dutton Ranch be about?

Clearly, Mariano will be the main antagonist in season 2. The big question is whether Beulah will ultimately turn on her former ally by teaming up with Beth and Rip to end her cartel partnership and put 10 Petal on the straight and narrow.

The other big question we have heading into season 2 is who killed Rob-Will? There are a couple of possible suspects, but given the way Rob-Will's death played out, it seems unlikely that Joaquin actually pulled the trigger. Actor Juan Pablo Raba agrees, telling EW "he's not a killer."

"He's not even a cowboy, for Christ's sake. He has never shot anyone in his life," Raba explained. "And if you think about the episode, and you go through the timeline, Rob-Will says bye to Oreana, and then we stay on her, and then not even 30 seconds later we hear a gunshot. So that means that whoever did it literally went, ding dong! Rob-Will opened the door and shot him. It takes a lot of cold blood to do that. You have to be a professional killer to do that."

So, either Rob-Will took his own life, or someone else did — and Raba has a suspect in mind. "We already saw Beulah take care of Rob-Will's dad, and she was just blackmailed by Rob-Will," he said, referring to the real reason — unbeknownst to Joaquin and Mariano — behind Beulah's decision to hand the ranch off to Rob-Will.

Who is in the cast of Dutton Ranch season 2?

Reilly and Hauser are definitely returning for the second season of the series. In addition to leading the spinoff, the pair also serve as executive producers.

While additional casting has yet to be announced, it's likely that several key players from season 1 will also return, including Annette Bening, Ed Harris, Juan Pablo Raba, Raoul Max Trujillo, Natalie Alyn Lind, Finn Little, and Ray McKinnon.

Unfortunately, the season 1 finale is probably the end of the line for Jai Courtney, unless Rob-Will returns in a flashback — which we wouldn't be against.

When does Dutton Ranch season 2 come out?

The timeline for season 2 is unclear. *Marshals* is a different story, as that particular spinoff airs on CBS, which has already announced that the series will return for season 2 this fall.

*Dutton Ranch* season 1 premiered on May 18, so it's possible that the series won't return until early 2027.
