Once this pattern was picked up on, the rumor mill went into overdrive, and before long, a viral theory took hold on social media that MJ would die in this latest installment of the film, and that Zendaya’s outfits were her way of mourning her character.

For example, speaking to IGN Benelux, she said: “Yeah, I mean, for me at least, there's just so many emotional scenes that you guys haven't seen that I am like: 'Oh man, this is going to, like, break people's hearts in a way that, like...I don't know...they're not gonna see coming.”

So, when Zendaya stepped out at the Shanghai, China premiere in a different color gown this week, you’d think that fans would be relieved by the sad theory seemingly being debunked. If you missed it, the star looked sensational in a sheer Versace gown with intricate webbing detailing, with the main color of the dress being white. Phew…
Vcg / Getty Images…Or so we thought. You see, a particularly attentive fan has pointed out that the white dress might still hold the same meaning, as white is the traditional color of mourning and grief in China, not black.

I'm fainting.” This post has been seen more than 2.1 million times since it was posted on Friday, earning over 80,000 likes in the process.

One of the quote-tweets admits: “I was so unsettled by that information that I went to Google to check it out, and now I'm doubly unsettled.” Another wrote: “That info just RUINED my day, thanks.” While somebody else noted: “She doesn't do anything without a reason! Zendaya and her styling team study everything from the dress code to the cultural symbolism of each country before stepping onto the red carpet. Absolute master of method dressing!”

Others theorized that even if the speculation is true, it might not necessarily mean that MJ dies. One person pointed out: “Folks are swearing up and down that MJ dies, but I'm over here thinking she's in mourning for someone else.”
