“Notre Céline” is how the French refer to Céline Dion. And a second “chez moi” is how she refers to France. One of the most popular female singers of all time, Dion has built a juggernaut of a 250-million-unit-shifting career out of amplifying traditional French chanson into bombastic power ballads.

So it’s no wonder the 58-year-old Francophone Canadian has chosen Paris as the city in which to make her stage comeback this weekend, after six years spent battling a rare and debilitating neurological condition called Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS).

By the time British and American audiences first heard of Dion in the mid-1990s – her anglophone breakthrough was Think Twice in 1994, while singing the Oscar-winning Titanic theme My Heart Will Go On (1997) made her a household name – she had already been a star in France for a decade.

Dion was just 14 when she released her breakthrough single D’amour ou d’amitié in 1983, immediately charming France’s chat-show hosts with an arresting blend of blithe innocence and mature poise. There’s always been a frisson between the tormented intensity of her vocals and the apparent ease with which she semi-gargles her way through the octaves. (As she says to Ryan Reynolds, when he tells her to “just dial it in” in an amusing cameo for a Deadpool 2 music video: “This thing only goes up to 11!”)

She kept the flag flying for Francophone pop when she won the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest (weirdly, representing Switzerland) with Ne partez pas sans moi. By 1994 she had teamed up with the popular French songwriter Jean-Jacques Goldman to record the Francophone album D’eux, which would become the best-selling French-language album of all time, shifting more than 11 million copies.

In the intervening years she released a succession of hit albums before slightly disappearing from public view, her isolation largely brought on by illness. But Dion’s star never faded, and when in 2024 she made a rare, brief public appearance to stand on the balcony of the Eiffel Tower and sing Edith Piaf’s classic Hymne a l’amour at the opening of the Paris Olympics, the hearts of her millions of fans around the world soared.

That return signalled that Paris was still Dion’s safe stage. And now, she’s going to need all the security of her French fanbase’s love and understanding when she steps up to the microphone at the sold-out La Défense Arena (Europe’s largest) on Saturday night.

Music insiders are equally excited. Veteran promoter John Giddings, who runs the Isle of Wight Festival, describes Dion as “a fighter” and one of the “nicest, most hardworking” artists he’s ever worked with. On her return to the stage, he says: “I think it’s fantastic; what she fought against is incredible. She was the only artist to ever ask me if I was making enough money – I stupidly said yes.”

As revealed in her raw 2024 Amazon Prime documentary I Am: Céline Dion, the agonising symptoms of SPS can be triggered by the “stimulation” of performance. The film showed her being injected with plasma from between 1,000 and 15,000 different donor antibodies in an attempt to boost her failing immune system. She was shown shaking, crying and curled into the foetal position – hands tautened into claws – as a medical team administered first one, then a second nasal spray to release her from a terrible spasm.

The whole excruciating episode, we learn, is the fallout from having thrown herself into the “passion” of singing a few minutes earlier. “Music,” she sobs, tears trickling down her crumpled, make-up-free face, “I miss it a lot.” She describes her mighty voice almost as a separate entity from herself. “Before I was hit with SPS,” she says, “my voice was the conductor of my life.”

Unlike other powerhouse divas who’ve made documentaries about themselves – Mariah Carey and Jennifer Lopez among them – Dion comes across as an understated person when she isn’t performing. She wanders through a storage unit containing all her stage costumes with a slightly lost, wistful air. Her home and off-stage wardrobe are all decorated in muted, bling-free tones. We see her rifling through her drawers for a pair of soft grey socks and watching her twin teenage sons playing computer games. She clearly adores her boys and her dogs (her documentary is dedicated to her late golden retriever, and she recently showed off a fluffy new puppy).

Eddy and Nelson are the youngest of her three boys with late husband and manager René Angélil, who died of cancer, aged 73, in 2016. The nature of Dion and Angélil’s relationship remains a subject of debate among fans. She was 12 years-old when she first met Angélil (then 38) in 1980; he was still married to his second wife, singer Anne Renée.

The youngest of 14 children raised in the Montréal suburb of Charlemagne, Dion’s childhood was poor yet filled with love. She recalls singing for her family, standing on the kitchen table, from the age of five. But that kitchen table was often bare. Dion’s mother (who went on to become a TV chef known as “Maman Dion” following her daughter’s success) was often forced to feed the family with carrot pies.

Into this scramble for resources came Angélil, dangling the golden ticket. He had been a pop star himself in the 1960s, specialising in French-language versions of hits by bands including the Beatles. He’d transferred into management in the 1970s and was already a regional big deal by the time he heard Dion’s demo tape. He mortgaged his house to fund her first album.

Angélil and Dion began dating when she was 19 and he was 45. Her family were concerned by the 26-year age gap and potential power imbalance.“I have to say that for my mum he was not the Prince Charming,” Dion told Access Hollywood in 2013.

Earlier this year, Dion’s longtime producer, Vito Luprano, released a memoir in which he claims to have spotted “lingering looks” and “chemistry” between Angélil and Dion from when she was just 17. He paints a picture of a besotted Dion whose life was controlled by her husband/manager, and notes how rare it was for the singer to be alone with anyone without her husband present, noting that in all the years they worked together: “Celine had never once asked me to share a meal or a coffee with me… we all knew that unless René was present, Celine was off-limits.”

Luprano also accused Angélil of calculated emotional manipulation. He believes that Angélil engineered an argument with Dion before she recorded her 1996 smash hit All by Myself to pull a more tortured vocal from her. He recalls sitting with Dion in the car on the way to the recording studio and noticing she “looked vulnerable, heavy with sadness”. When Lupano confronted Angélil, he alleges the manager did not deny distressing his wife on purpose, arguing that his decision to upset her was justified by the powerful performance the row produced.

Despite what might strike outsiders as a disturbing dynamic, Dion remained devoted to Angélil through three bouts of cancer, and until his death. In the documentary, the same song – All By Myself – is played as she walks in a black veil behind her husband’s coffin. Angélil’s death was not Dion’s only experience with grief. Just two days after her husband’s death, her brother Daniel died from cancer, aged 59.

It turns out Dion first began experiencing symptoms of SPS almost 20 years ago. One day after breakfast her voice began glitching. She felt no problem with her lungs, but experienced a tightening of muscles and tendons surrounding them. “I was freaked out,” she says. Over the following years she began taking Valium – which allowed her to walk steadily and to swallow – among other drugs. “One pill. Two pills, five pills…” she recalls. “I don’t want to sound dramatic but I could have died.”

In 2021 her health forced her to cancel a much-hyped Las Vegas residency, and in August 2022 she was finally formally diagnosed with SPS. The condition is so rare that it’s only diagnosed in 1 to 2 people in a million, although it may affect many more whose symptoms are misdiagnosed as similar illnesses such as multiple sclerosis. Women aged between 30 and 60 are the most affected, and research indicates that it may result from an autoimmune response in the brain and spinal cord.

Living with the condition looks exhausting, and Dion’s sons have publicly expressed concern about the impact the Paris concerts will have on their mother’s health.

Yet Dion’s biographer Élisabeth Reynaud has told the press that the singer is “in a state of total determination” as she prepares to lift the mic again. The current plan is for Dion to perform a series of 16 concerts this autumn, with shows taking place three times a week on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. She has a further 10 performances lined up for May 2027.

It’s going to be a challenge. We won’t hear the voice Dion once had. But I suspect the shows will be kept afloat by arenas filled with love. The heart behind those songs will go on… And on.

- “I’m not sure which one she is,” Griffin says of conservative panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin, who worked under Donald Trump after the comedian’s 2017 photo scandal involving the president.

- The comedian is set to launch a new leg of her *New Face, New Tour* show this week.

Though they share a last name, comedian Kathy Griffin still isn’t entirely sure who *The View* cohost — and former Donald Trump staffer — Alyssa Farah Griffin is.

“First of all, her name is Griffin, so she could be one of my cousins, so it would make sense that she’s MAGA. Some of my relatives are MAGA!” Kathy tells ** of the ex-White House communications professional (whom has since denounced the MAGA movement) as the comedian prepares to hit the road once again for the next leg of her *New Face, New Tour* stand-up show.

Before Alyssa resigned from her White House duties and joined *The View*’s panel in 2022, Kathy had long spoken about the Barbara Walters-created talk show in her act — including memorable stories about the late journalist voicing backstage her preference for Astroglide personal lubricant and Kathy’s numerous (unconfirmed and alleged) bannings from appearing on the talk show over the years.

Now that she’s re-appeared on the show in recent years, Griffin admits to EW that, while Alyssa “was great” in the moment, she’s still “not sure which one she is” at the Hot Topics table.

“I know they all have different color hair now,” Kathy says of the panel, which also includes Whoopi Goldberg, Joy Behar, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Ana Navarro. “I can’t keep track because I literally did the show when Barbara started it with f---ing Meredith [Vieira] and Lisa Ling and Star [Jones]. Remember Debbie Matenopoulos? That’s how far back I go!”

While her interactions with Alyssa were tame on her recent appearances at the table, Kathy weathered a wave of backlash — and even a Department of Justice probe — after she posed for a photo while holding a mask made to look like the bloodied head of Alyssa’s former boss, Trump, in 2017.

Kathy was eventually cleared of wrongdoing after a federal investigation, but she chronicled the aftermath in her 2019 documentary *Hell of a Story*, and has been open about how the industry (including friends like Andy Cohen and Anderson Cooper) shut her out in the years after the incident.

Still, Kathy has slowly but surely returned to her roots on stage, and tells EW that her upcoming *New Face, New Tour* dates will include several of her signature, juicy celebrity stories — namely “stories I wasn’t able to tell when the person was alive” regarding *The View*.

“I tell a story about doing *The View* in my current tour. Even though Barbara is no longer even with us, people love that story because it’s so dishy,” Kathy says. “You can’t defame the dead, so now I can really riff on my backstage *View* stories. People still remember Barbara Walters and they can imagine her in that scenario, because we felt like we knew her even though she was unknowable.”

Kathy has a storied past with* The View*, after Walters was reportedly upset over the aforementioned Astroglide story. The comedian also famously sparred with conservative cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck on the air, and revealed in a *Page Six* interview earlier this year that she used to leave the Hot Topics table with bruises on her legs.

“Barbara Walters, the late great, who I adored, did not care for me, so she kicked me under the table,” Kathy said, referencing her numerous co-hosting stints over the years. “And I used to leave that show with bruises, but proud of them.”

Getting The Trawler’s point of view

While Bret narrates the book and it’s — for the most part — told through his point of view, the show offers more insight into The Trawler. The series often strays from Bret’s first-person narrative so viewers can see The Trawler hunt and kidnap the victims he was most closely related to.

The Trawler’s murders, overall, are also more in depth. Book readers know that details about what *actually *happens to the victims (i.e. cat heads sewn onto a woman’s chest) aren’t revealed until much later in the novel, but the show allows for that visual in the first two episodes.

*The Shards *does a great job of emphasizing the importance of Brett’s relationship with Matt Kellner (Owen Painter), but his disappearance and eventual murder changes quite a bit. In the book, Bret listens to the cassette tape of Matt’s torture and death after the body has been discovered. The show has Bret finding the tape in his mailbox and listening to the torture while Matt was still alive and being held captive.

Who is Rhonda?

One of Bret’s classmates Rhonda, gets introduced during the show’s third episode and quickly becomes one of The Trawler’s victims. The character, played by Ivy Wolk, is never mentioned in the novel, and it appears she was created for the show.

Rhonda becomes the only one of The Trawler’s victims to be released. As a way to integrate her back into society, Susan (Gerber) decides that Rhonda should be Homecoming queen. However, when Rhonda wins the crown, she accuses Susan of being The Trawler.

The Liz Schaffer and Ryan Vaughn of it all

Wood’s character, Liz, appears briefly in the novel, but Murphy’s adaptation expands her character. A failed actress, she and Bentley’s Terry Schaffer bring their onscreen marriage issues front and center.

Things take a second twist when Bret’s classmate Ryan (Daniel Dale) is revealed to have a side hustle as an adult film actor. In an attempt to revive her career, Liz ends up nabbing an adult film gig in which Ryan becomes her scene partner. This leads to a rather uncomfortable scene in which Liz recognizes Ryan as someone who goes to school with her daughter, Debbie (Warner).

What happened at Robert’s party?

The Shards: Kaia Gerber as Susan, Reynolds, Igby Rigney as Bret, Hayes Warner as Debbie, Schaffer, Homer Gere as Robert Mallory, Graham Campbell as Thom Wright.

Not much about Robert’s storyline changes — which is probably for the best. But there are a few things that differ from the novel. Susan throws him a part in which Bret stirs the pot by confronting Robert with a chilling rumor. Some of Robert’s former classmates tell Bret that it was speculated Robert murdered his mother, but he was cleared of all wrongdoing. In the book, Robert’s aunt shares this with Bret way later in the story. (Similarly, Robert’s aunt’s second home in the show is a rental property, not a divorce asset.)

Elsewhere at the event, Debbie and Ryan sneak into a room to hook up. Debbie does not cheat on Bret in the book; rather, he’s cheating on *her *with Ryan. But that’s not even the kicker. As they’re about to have sex, an unnamed intruder with a knife enters the room. Rather than doing anything, the mysterious man stares at Debbie and Ryan. Bret and Thom (who appears to know the intruder) enter the room and make the assailant leave the party.

This moment appears to be reminiscent of a run-in that Bret has with a Riders of the Afterlife cult member at the music video party in the book, which was noticeably cut from the show.

The Debbie and Thom switch-up

Ellis often alludes that Thom (Campbell) is unintelligent in the novel, with Bret telling readers that his best friend isn’t picking up on clues that his girlfriend, Susan, and Robert are romantically involved. This is a complete shift in the show, with Thom visibly angry about Susan and Robert’s budding relationship.

It actually appears that Debbie was dumbed down a bit for the show, focusing more on the events during their senior year — homecoming and a dance-off — than anything else.

Some more minor differences

In some circumstances, the general order of events has been switched around.

The premiere episode, for example, has Bret seeing Robert at the movie theater way earlier than the events of the book. The infamous beige van also gets introduced way earlier — but raises just as many questions. Bret inadvertently crossing paths with The Trawler on the Buckley campus after hours gets cut from the show, with him discovering the defiled mascot statue during the first day of school.

Bret and Debbie’s romance becomes hot and heavy way earlier, as well. The book has the teens making out the first night things went from friends to something more, but the show took it to another level with Bret and Debbie having sex on a lounge chair at a party.

There was no mention of a dance-off in Ellis’ novel, but the show had a musical episode. No one sang, but there was a whole lot of dancing — to some pretty iconic songs from the 1980s. All of episode 5 was created by Murphy, but the inclusion of Anthony Ramos as a character named Tony Cruz was a fun bonus to the chaos.

Unmasking The Trawler

The season finale both does and does not stray from the book. Both Terry’s fall and the attack on Susan and Thom are all straight from the novel. As is the identity of The Trawler. Yes, in both iterations, The Trawler is never unmasked.

However, the show’s final scene is where things differ. Bret and Robert both end up at the police station ready to accuse each other of being The Trawler. When detectives lead them into an interrogation room, nearly every character is present. Authorities reveal that one person in the room is definitely The Trawler, they just don’t know who. The season is left on a major cliffhanger.

After enjoying a terrific month of August, in which shares soared 37.5% after "missing" on earnings but delivering on free cash flow, credit card stock CPI Card Group(NASDAQ: PMTS) is giving back nearly all its gains this morning.

As of 11:25 a.m. ET, CPI stock is down 16.3%.

What's wrong with CPI stock today?

If you recall, CPI stock first sold off -- then took off like a rocket -- after the manufacturer of credit cards and debit cards confirmed it generated $25.9 million in positive free cash flow last quarter. This morning, someone decided to cash in on that good news, as CPI announced a big sale of insider shares on the "secondary" market.

Specifically, the company announced that "major stockholder" Parallel49 Equity is selling somewhere between 2.3 million and 2.7 million shares, depending on whether underwriters exercise their overallotment options. Worse news for shareholders, Parallel49 is selling at the rock-bottom price of $21.50 per share.

That's 20% below the price CPI stock fetched at close of trading yesterday -- which is why CPI is crashing.

Should CPI investors be scared?

To put this in context, Parallel49 Equity is a private equity firm that owned CPI Payments for the past 20 years. That's a long time for a PE investor to await a payoff. The fact that Parallel49 is taking advantage of the stock's recent surge to cash out now isn't surprising (though the scale of the discount it's willing to accept to exit its position is a bit surprising).

For investors who choose not to follow Parallel49's example, though, here's the good news: Thanks to today's sell-off, CPI stock trades today at a price-to-free cash flow ratio of just 4x. That's cheap enough to buy.

Even when everyone else seems to be selling.

Sean "Diddy" Combs landed a major win in his defamation case against attorney Ariel Mitchell and her client Courtney Burgess, who claimed to have videos showing the music mogul sexually assaulting minors and celebrities at his "freak off" sex parties.

New York federal judge John P. Cronan denied Mitchell's motion to dismiss the lawsuit in a Sept. 4 ruling obtained by USA TODAY, giving Combs the green light to move forward with his $100 million legal action.

Combs first sued Burgess, Mitchell and Nexstar Media for $50 million in January 2025 but amended his complaint seven months later seeking an additional $50 million in damages. In the filing, he accused the lawyer of damaging his reputation by vouching for Burgess' allegations and making allegedly false statements of her own, "including that a police report corroborated an accusation of rape against Combs and that Combs had used drug-laced baby oil to incapacitate his victims."

Judge sides with Diddy, orders case to move forward

While Mitchell argued in her motion to dismiss that her statements "are not 'capable of being proven true or false,' all her comments 'only follow[ed] statements by others,' and any statements that can be attributed solely to her were 'pure opinion' or 'rhetorical hyperbole,'" Cronan disagreed.

"Mitchell’s accusations that Combs sexually assaulted celebrities and minors, secretly recorded his sexual partners, used those recordings to extort people, drugged a woman with drug-laced baby oil, and victimized 'hundreds, maybe thousands of people' are not inactionable opinion or hyperbole because they carry precise meanings that arereadily understood," Cronan wrote.

He added that it is not only possible for the claims to be verified, but any statements "delivered by an attorney professing firsthand familiarity with the evidence" would reasonably be interpreted by the public as fact.

USA TODAY has reached out to Mitchell's attorney for comment.

The Grammy-winning rapper stated in his amended complaint that Burgess' "outlandish claims" caused "severe reputational harm" and culminated in a "media frenzy" against him.

"In this pitiful spectacle, all pretense of objectivity has been abandoned, as a global audience feasts at the all-you-can-eat buffet of wild lies and conspiracy theories," it said. "Mitchell and Burgess are among the worst perpetrators in this offensive scenario.

Prison sentence: Sean 'Diddy' Combs' bombshell sex-crimes case culminates in 4-year prison sentence

"They eagerly court every opportunity to broadcast blatant falsehoods, pretending they have proof that Mr. Combs engaged in heinous acts, knowing that no such proof exists," Combs' legal team alleged, further accusing Nexstar's broadcaster NewsNation of "lend(ing) its credibility to and amplify(ing) defendant Burgess and Mitchell's lies, giving them a mainstream media platform to malign (Combs) for defendants' collective profit."

Combs, who denies all allegations of sexual misconduct, is currently serving a 50-month federal prison sentence for his July 2025 conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

His projected release date is Feb. 5, 2028.

Melania Trump has come to the defence of her husband’s close aide Natalie Harp amid rumours that Ms Harp has an unhealthy obsession with the US president.

Media speculation about the 35-year-old aide was prompted after Jon Ossoff, the Democratic senator for Georgia suggested Mr Trump “doesn’t want to do the job. He wants to build his ballroom and travel with Natalie”.

The aide’s close relationship with Mr Trump and her unfettered access are thought to have caused concern amongst his staff.

She became known as the “human printer” after carrying around a printer to hand Mr Trump hard copies of news articles on the campaign trail.

Ms Harp is reported to have slept in a changing room to be close to the US president and travelled in the boot of his car when there were no seats.

A series of intimate letters Ms Harp apparently sent to Mr Trump also resurfaced, in which she reportedly wrote “You are all that matters to me” and labelled herself “unworthy” of him.

Speaking on a conservative YouTube show released on Tuesday, Marc Beckman, the first lady’s official spokesman, said Ms Harp was “hard-working”, “loyal” and “very intelligent”.

“The mainstream media… they’re endlessly obsessed with garbage tabloid gossip about Natalie Harp, who is a hard-working, loyal White House aide to President Trump, a cancer survivor, who POTUS helped get off-label treatment for and saved her life. I mean, what do you make of that?” he said.

“They don’t know anything about the first lady’s personal and private life,” he added. “They don’t even take the time to put us on air to cover these incredible achievements that our first lady has accomplished.”

“What they need to do is look in the mirror because they’re all attacking this hard-working, very talented, very intelligent person in Natalie Harp,” he said.

He added: “And what they do is they harp on the issues of gossip rather than going ahead and covering the substantial achievements that this first lady and the president also have conducted during this past year and a half.”

Ms Harp has worked for Mr Trump since 2022. On Wednesday, it was revealed that she was given $45,000 (£33,000 ) by the president as a Christmas present, according to financial disclosure forms released by his administration.

In July, she was one few aides that travelled with Mr Trump on an alternative jet after he was sneaked off Air Force One in Turkey over an Iranian assassination threat.

Key members of Mr Trump’s cabinet, including Marco Rubio and Scott Bessent, were left behind on the original plane alongside journalists.

Ms Harp gained national attention in 2019 when, having been diagnosed with bone cancer, she credited Mr Trump for saving her life through a law signed in 2018 that provided her with access to experimental treatments.

She wrote Mr Trump a series of letters in 2023, telling him in one, “You are all that matters to me,” and describing him as her “Guardian and Protector in this Life”, according to The New York Times.
