Some rides are designed to make you wonder whether you’re about to survive them. Usually, that’s part of the fun. But a few dangerous theme park rides crossed the uncomfortable line between controlled fear and genuine safety problems. From record-breaking slides to experimental roller coasters, these attractions developed flaws serious enough to force closures, redesigns, or complete removal. How did some of them ever make it past the drawing board?

1. Verrückt Took “World’s Tallest” Way Too Literally

r/megalophobiavia Reddit

At 168 feet tall, Verrückt wasn’t exactly easing anyone into the experience. The record-breaking Schlitterbahn water slide sent multi-person rafts plunging an enormous first drop before racing over a second hill. Questions about its design and ride dynamics existed even during testing. After a fatal 2016 accident, Verrückt never reopened and was eventually dismantled.

2. Son of Beast Was Almost Too Ambitious to Exist

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

A wooden roller coaster over 200 feet tall wasn’t enough. Kings Island’s Son of Beast originally had a vertical loop, too. What could possibly complicate that engineering challenge? Structural problems and rider injuries eventually led to major modifications, including removing the loop. The fixes weren’t enough to save its future, though, and the enormous coaster was ultimately demolished.

3. Thunder River Rapids Looked Like a Family Ride

r/submechanophobiavia Reddit

Nothing about Thunder River Rapids screamed extreme thrill ride. That was part of what made its safety failure so unsettling. The Dreamworld attraction carried families through artificial rapids in circular rafts, but a catastrophic 2016 incident exposed serious problems involving the ride system and its operation. Dreamworld permanently closed the attraction afterward rather than returning it to service.

4. Action Park Let You Control the Brakes

r/newjerseyvia Reddit

Most amusement rides don’t hand guests control over one of the most important safety variables: speed. Action Park’s Alpine Slide basically did. Riders descended a concrete track in small wheeled carts equipped with their own brakes, which meant skill and judgment suddenly mattered quite a bit. Unsurprisingly, crashes and injuries became an infamous part of the attraction’s reputation.

5. Cannonball Loop Somehow Made It Off the Drawing Board

r/WTFvia Reddit

Look at a normal waterslide. Now add a complete vertical loop. Yes, someone actually built that. Action Park’s Cannonball Loop became legendary for its bizarre enclosed design and notoriously difficult testing rather than for becoming a successful attraction. It remains perhaps the purest expression of the park’s philosophy: if an idea looked completely unreasonable, apparently that wasn’t necessarily a dealbreaker.

6. Kayak Experience Hid the Danger Underwater

r/photocritiquevia Reddit

Speed wasn’t the problem here. Action Park’s Kayak Experience sent guests through an artificial whitewater course using submerged electric fans to create the current. After a fatal electrocution incident in 1982, the attraction was permanently closed. Unlike the park’s more obvious thrill machines, its most serious danger was something riders couldn’t even see.

7. Battersea Park’s Big Dipper Ended in Disaster

r/Londonvia Reddit

For decades, the Big Dipper looked like classic wooden-coaster fun at London’s Battersea Park. Then, in 1972, a train being pulled uphill broke loose and rolled backward, leading to a devastating crash. The attraction never reopened. How many modern safety systems exist today precisely because early rides revealed what could happen when a single mechanism failed?

8. Flip Flap Railway Had the Wrong Kind of Loop

r/thatsinterestingvia Reddit

Engineers had figured out that a roller coaster could travel upside down. The geometry still needed some work. Coney Island’s Flip Flap Railway used a nearly circular loop that subjected riders to intense forces, unlike the gentler teardrop-shaped loops used today. The coaster disappeared, but its wonderfully questionable circle became an enduring lesson in roller-coaster design.

9. Loop-the-Loop Wasn’t Exactly Gentle on Your Neck

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

Imagine seeing a vertical loop in the early 1900s, when roller coasters themselves were still relatively novel. Olentangy Park’s Loop-the-Loop promised exactly that thrill, but its tight circular design developed a reputation for being painfully rough on riders. Early looping coasters were spectacular experiments, but human bodies weren’t always thrilled about participating in the research.

10. Derby Racer Turned the Ride Into an Actual Race

r/Bostonvia Reddit

One roller coaster train flying around a wooden track already offered plenty of variables. Revere Beach’s Derby Racer added another train beside it. The racing design created a spectacular attraction, but its early operating era came with safety standards far removed from today’s. Eventually dismantled, it belongs to a period when coaster designers were still discovering where excitement should stop and safeguards should begin.

11. Mindbender Changed After a Deadly Derailment

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

Three loops inside a shopping mall already made Mindbender an extraordinary sight. But in 1986, the West Edmonton Mall coaster suffered a derailment that exposed serious mechanical and safety problems. The ride later returned only after extensive modifications and continued operating for decades. Sometimes keeping a ride means fundamentally changing the machine that made headlines in the first place.

12. Crystal Beach Cyclone Was Almost Too Intense for Its Own Good

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

The Cyclone didn’t need loops to intimidate riders. Its violent turns, steep drops, and relentless speed earned the 1920s coaster a reputation for extreme intensity, with stories of riders becoming ill or overwhelmed. Would a coaster deliberately engineered to feel this punishing survive today’s design process? Crystal Beach eventually dismantled it in 1946.

13. Rough Riders Lived Up to the Name

r/coneyislandvia Reddit

There was nothing metaphorical about calling this ride Rough Riders. Coney Island’s early coaster recreated the sensation of racing through rough terrain, with an operator controlling the train rather than today’s automated systems. Its history included serious accidents, making it a striking reminder of how much responsibility early amusement rides sometimes placed in human hands.

14. Krug Park’s Big Dipper Had No Second Chance

r/CatastrophicFailurevia Reddit

A routine ride became the end of Krug Park’s amusement era in 1930. After the Big Dipper suffered a catastrophic accident, authorities permanently closed the Omaha park. The coaster’s story stands apart because the consequences extended beyond one attraction: a single ride helped bring an entire amusement park to an abrupt end.

15. Wild Wonder Lasted Only a Few Years

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

Wild Wonder wasn’t an aging wooden relic from amusement-park history. The compact steel coaster opened at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in the 1990s, making what happened next feel disturbingly modern. After a fatal 1999 accident involving a train rolling backward, the coaster was removed, ending the remarkably short life of an attraction that had barely gotten started.

16. Fujin Raijin II Exposed a Maintenance Failure

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

Fujin Raijin II had been operating at Japan’s Expoland for years when a wheel assembly failed during a 2007 ride, causing a derailment. The investigation put maintenance practices under scrutiny, and the coaster never returned to normal operation. Expoland itself eventually closed, leaving the abandoned ride as an eerie reminder that safety depends on more than the original design.

17. Mind Scrambler Became Too Dangerous in the Dark

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

Part of Mind Scrambler’s appeal was sensory confusion: riders spun through Rye Playland inside a darkened enclosure filled with lights and music. But after a fatal 2007 accident, investigators focused on the attraction’s restraints and operating conditions. The ride was permanently closed. How much does darkness change when operators also need to see what’s happening?

18. Hydro Returned With a Very Different Safety System

r/rollercoastersvia Reddit

Oakwood Theme Park’s Hydro sent boats over an enormous near-vertical drop, ending in a spectacular wall of water. After a fatal 2004 accident, the attraction closed while its restraint system came under investigation. It eventually reopened with major safety modifications and a new name, Drenched, making it a clear example of a thrill ride that could only continue after fundamental changes.

Theme parks are supposed to manufacture the feeling of danger while carefully controlling the real thing. These dangerous theme park rides show what happens when that distinction breaks down. Sometimes the problem was experimental engineering, sometimes maintenance, restraints, or operations, but each case helped expose weaknesses that parks could no longer afford to ignore.

Keep Exploring The Scroller

The strangest part of amusement park history isn’t how extreme rides became. It’s how much designers had to learn along the way. Social media influencer Yung Filly has pleaded guilty to cannabis possession, days after a judge cleared him to return to the UK from Australia ahead of a retrial on rape charges.

The 31-year-old, whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, was charged with possession of a prohibited drug whilst on bail for sexual offences.

His guilty plea to the drug charge was entered at Mandurah Magistrates’ Court, south of Perth in Western Australia, on Tuesday.

Barrientos did not appear in court in person.

He was fined 750 Australian dollars (£397) and was ordered to pay court costs of 308 Australian dollars (£163).

Barrientos has appeared on several BBC shows and is known for collaborating with the YouTube collective Beta Squad. The rapper appeared for England on Soccer Aid and The Great Celebrity Bake Off for Stand Up To Cancer on Channel 4.

He had been ordered to return to the UK by August 31 under new bail conditions set out by Judge Linda Black in Western Australia last week.

Barrientos was acquitted of three counts of raping a woman in an Australian hotel room at a trial in July, but the jury could not reach a verdict on three further rape charges.

However, he was found guilty of two charges of assault occasioning bodily harm over bites to the woman’s neck and breast.

During a court appearance in August, prosecutors confirmed they will be proceeding with a retrial on the three unresolved rape charges.

At a separate hearing on August 28, Ms Black said that, although a new trial would likely happen next year, the case could face delays.

“It seems to me it is appropriate to return to his home country until he is needed for his retrial,” the judge said.

Under the conditions, he must remain in the UK, return to Australia 10 days before his trial and surrender his passport within 24 hours of returning.

The YouTube influencer pleaded not guilty to all charges at the July trial when prosecutors alleged he assaulted a 20-year-old woman, who cannot legally be named, in his hotel room while touring Australia in September 2024.

During the initial trial, the court heard that the pair met at a nightclub after his performance.

The Colombian-born entertainer was arrested several days later in the eastern city of Brisbane.

Steve Burton, who plays Jason on General Hospital, revealed that a new male actor will soon join the cast. He hinted that the new actor will take on a familiar character in Port Charles. This revelation came while discussing the challenges faced when a portrayer isn’t aware of the character’s history and relationships in soap operas.

Steve Burton possibly lets a General Hospital recasting slip

During a conversation on the That’s Awesome podcast, Burton initially stressed the importance of knowing the history of the character in any soap opera. He discussed that if one isn’t familiar with it, the portrayal could be impacted. Providing an example, he later surprisingly revealed a General Hospital recasting. He said, “So, there’s a guy on the show right now who came on the show, and you guys will see him. I had some scenes with him — I can’t say what it is yet — but I said, ‘Do you know exactly what’s happening?”

He stated that the scenes between them were connected to Port Charles’ past. Those past events affected this character’s recent actions and behavior, now played by the alleged new actor. At the time, Burton asked the male actor if he was aware of what exactly was happening. However, he found that the actor wasn’t very familiar with the character’s past stories. And that he had made up another backstory in the back of his mind. The actor also admitted that he had no idea what was going on.

Burton revealed that he stepped in to offer him information about the scene and the character. He explained, “He’s been an actor for a long, long time. He’s been on some prime-time shows. He’s done this for a long time. So I said, ‘Do you mind if I just tell you kind of, you know, what this is, who this is, why they’re doing it, and what the involvement for me is?’ And he goes, ‘No, I would love [for you] to.” He further explained how even knowing the bond between the characters helps an actor easily understand important aspects. This includes why a dialogue is being said, the intention behind it, and how it should be interpreted.

When you win an NBA championship, you get a summer to puff up your chest and talk your talk. In the final month of the offseason, the New York Knicks are going through that. After a mundane 53-29 regular season, they had one of the most dominant playoff runs ever.

The Knicks went a sizzling 16-3. That included a historic 13-game winning streak that featured blowout wins left and right. Everything clicked for New York. Jalen Brunson penciled his name in basketball lore. Karl-Anthony Towns had the last laugh with all his haters. And OG Anunoby is basically a New York deity thanks to his Game 4 tip-in win.

Now, Knicks fans are getting daring with their takes. That's what happens when you're sitting on the NBA throne. You've earned the right to say the most outlandish things ever and make them somewhat plausible. In recent days, we've seen that with Brunson being better than Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

That 100-degree opinion has made the rounds on social media in recent days. Sports media personalities like Max Kellerman and Shannon Sharpe explained their reasoning recently for why Brunson's NBA championship ring has helped him usurp Gilgeous-Alexander in the league rankings.

Here's what both had to say:

Max Kellerman

"SGA and Jalen Brunson play the same position, modern NBA, pick-and-roll, foul-baiting point guards. They both have the same team. San Antonio deployed the same defensive scheme to stop that guy. It worked on SGA. SGA is a great player, of course. But they did it to Brunson and it worked the first two games. But because Brunson is better than SGA, meaning he’s more valuable than SGA. He was able to make adjustments. It’s because Jalen Brunson’s basketball brain was working overtime."

Shannon Sharpe

"I think me personally, Brunson’s championship is more valuable than Shai’s MVP."

Thoughts

Now, is Brunson truly a better player than Gilgeous-Alexander now? No. Not really. Just stack their resumes next to each other. Gilgeous-Alexander is a two-time MVP winner and one of the greatest scorers ever. He's averaged 30-plus points on superb-efficiency for four consecutive years. Oh, and he has a championship ring in hand, too. The 28-year-old had an unconventional path to NBA superstardom. But now, he's quickly climbed the all-time ranks and often shares feats with guys like Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.

I think Brunson was superb in the past NBA playoffs. He stepped up as a 28-point scorer and won the 2026 NBA Finals MVP. But his trophy case just isn't as stuffed as Gilgeous-Alexander's. For comparison, Brunson has never averaged 30 points and his highest career MVP voting finish was fifth place. Before New York's title run, both players weren't even in the same stratosphere. Now, that's completely changed? I don't know about that.

I get that the Knicks are enjoying the high of winning a Larry O'Brien trophy, but let's slow down with the 'Brunson over Gilgeous-Alexander' talk. He wasn't even New York's undisputed best player in the NBA playoffs. Towns and Anunoby also had their respective moments under the sun. There's no real way to build up a case for Brunson over Gilgeous-Alexander. He just doesn't have the same peaks or track record of success to put up a plausible argument.

Jaydon Blue made our list of released players the Philadelphia Eagles should target, and the organization is now adding the former Dallas Cowboys running back to its practice squad. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday that Blue is signing with Philadelphia after being released by Dallas during Sunday’s final roster cuts. The second-year running back cleared waivers, allowing him to negotiate with any team.

Dallas selected Blue in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft after he showcased his speed and receiving ability at Texas. His surprising release created an opportunity for the Eagles to add another developmental player with legitimate explosiveness. Blue rushed 23 times for 94 yards during the 2026 preseason, including 75 yards on 15 carries against the Arizona Cardinals. He also caught two passes for 15 yards and contributed as a kickoff returner.

The 5-foot-9, 198-pound running back gives Philadelphia a different skill set than the other backs on its practice squad. Dameon Pierce offers experience and power between the tackles, while Carson Steele brings physicality, receiving ability and special-teams value. Blue’s straight-line speed and ability to create chunk plays make him an intriguing developmental option.

Philadelphia kept Saquon Barkley, Tank Bigsby and Will Shipley on the initial 53-man roster. Adding Blue gives the Eagles another potential call-up if injuries affect the active group during the season.

The move also allows Philadelphia to take a closer look at a young player Dallas once viewed as a potential complement to its starting backfield. Blue must improve his consistency, pass protection and special-teams value, but his athletic upside made him precisely the type of post-cutdown target the Eagles could afford to develop.

A summer when Arsenal targeted Vinicius Junior and Julian Alvarez seems set to end without them luring a Galactico of a forward but Mikel Arteta may have other ways of adding a new dimension to his attack. Perhaps typically, given the Arsenal manager’s obsession with accumulating defenders, it involves a man whose day job is at the back.

But Riccardo Calafiori got their season off to a flying start with a goal after 23 seconds in the Community Shield. And, when Arsenal seemed short of incision at Villa Park, it was their charismatic, compelling left-back who provided the element of unpredictability required. By surging forward to supply Bukayo Saka with a simple finish, Calafiori maintained Arsenal’s 100 percent start to the campaign. If part of the test is to improve upon last year, in one respect they already have: defeated at Villa Park in December, they were victorious now.

“That image when the players were on the floor, totally battered, it was a really difficult one to take and we used that,” said Arteta. This was cathartic and came from the collective. “It was a squad victory,” Arteta said.

It was forged more by perspiration than inspiration. If Arteta had seemed to take the handbrake off in eviscerating first Manchester City in Cardiff and then Coventry at home, this was a night when it was back on. Arsenal can win in different ways, but many of them involve a clean sheet and Aston Villa finished without a shot on target. The travelling Gunners’ eventual chorus of “1-0 to the champions” was a retort to their Villa counterparts chanting that they would never be able to call themselves champions of Europe.

Maybe, maybe not. But Saka’s second goal in as many league games showed Arsenal already had the potential to kick on; if Saka, Kai Havertz and Martin Odegaard can stay fit, each could offer more goals than last year. And while they are yet to land a left winger, Gabriel Martinelli’s departure could afford Eberechi Eze the chance for more minutes on the flank.

He came on at half-time for Christos Tzolis who, after a fine start to his Arsenal career, was booked then hooked. Eze offered an indication of what he can offer to help set up the goal, releasing the underlapping Calafiori, who centred for Saka. “Ebs comes on and makes the difference to win the game,” said Arteta.

It was a personal comeback, with Eze culpable for Matty Cash’s goal at Villa Park last year, and a swift response to a collective disappointment. Five minutes earlier, Arsenal were initially awarded a penalty when Ian Maatsen’s nudge in the back sent Saka flying. A VAR review later and the offence was adjudged just outside the box. Odegaard dinked the resulting free kick just wide.

Until then, the goalmouth action consisted of Villa rattling the frame. Emi Buendia, the late match-winner last season, was almost an early scorer, his ferocious, first-time shot thudding into the Arsenal bar.

Buendia had begun Villa’s Premier League campaign as a false nine at Brighton. They had a genuine striker here, the £47.5m Nicolas Jackson parachuted in for a debut after his move from Chelsea. He showed flashes of pace without getting a chance.

Arsenal shut out new-look Aston Villa, who offered a debut to striker Nicolas Jackson (Getty)

Perhaps the more auspicious bow came at the other end of the pitch, even if the statistics will not reflect it. Goalkeeper Zion Suzuki made fine saves from Declan Rice’s header and Havertz’s shot, when the German was clear on goal; he was not to know that, with the flag raised for different reasons, neither would have counted. The Japan international cut an authoritative figure and looked a worthy successor to the sold Emi Martinez.

The most notable bow, however, came in the closing stages. It was certainly the most audible introduction, with boos apparent when Ezri Konsa was on the ball. A stalwart of Villa’s best team of the 21st century had decamped to London amid the exodus. The fixture list may have been unkind to him, giving him an immediate return to Villa. Even with William Saliba and Jurrien Timber injured, Arteta had enough defenders to start without the £51m man.

Saka scored his second goal of the season to earn Arsenal victory ahead of next week’s showdown with Chelsea (PA)

He also benefited from having players already accustomed to lining up alongside each other. This was change against continuity, with the upheaval at Villa versus Arsenal’s summer of stability and solidity. The stands at Villa Park contained Taylor Harwood-Bellis and Ibrahim Mbaye, perhaps the last arrivals in a recruitment drive that has cost a quarter of a billion pounds, all funded by sales.

“We are happy how we are closing the window,” said Unai Emery. “We are not regretting anything.” His Villa were far better than they were against Brighton, though that is not saying much. They made that rout look like an aberration. “We performed like we planned and we competed like we planned,” added Emery. “The result, of course, is painful.”

He is reconstructing his side. Villa Park can whip up an atmosphere for a night game even when the North Stand is a building site but Arsenal are sufficiently battle-hardened they could cope with it. This was not a statement performance but, in its own way, it may prove a statement result. "To lose in Villa Park is not normal," said Emery. It may have been a good time to face a team in transition but, thanks to Calafiori and Saka, Arsenal ensured it was as they pocketed the points.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — UCLA fired athletic director Martin Jarmond on Monday and replaced him with Tim Harris, the former longtime president of business operations for the Los Angeles Lakers.

The shake-up was announced in a letter from Chancellor Julio Frenk to the university community. Frank described it as a “new path forward for UCLA Athletics.”

Jarmond, who had the job for six years, leaves immediately. The Bruins won three NCAA championships last season, including the first by the women's basketball team.

Harris, 64, will have the title of CEO and athletic director and work on a pro bono basis, Frenk wrote. Harris graduated from UCLA in 1989 with a sociology degree and played goalkeeper for the men's soccer team while in Westwood.

Harris spent over 35 years with the Lakers and left the NBA franchise in February, four months after the Buss family sold it to Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter. Harris was among Lakers governor Jeanie Buss' inner circle who received a major financial bonus after the sale. The team was recently sold again.

Jarmond, 46, replaced Dan Guerrero as AD in 2020. He signed a five-year contract extension in May 2024. During his tenure, the athletic department has run yearly deficits for seven consecutive years, totaling $241 million in shortfalls.

UCLA joined the Big Ten Conference two years ago, raking in millions of dollars in media rights fees while also facing increased travel expenses. Its deficit was reduced to $21.6 million for the 2025 fiscal year. The university has repeatedly bailed out the athletic department to keep it afloat.

Frenk cited the financial situation as a reason for the change.

“UCLA Athletics currently carries a significant financial debt, and its current path is not sustainable,” Frenk wrote. “Now is the moment to build a model for Athletics that protects the breadth of our program, creates new opportunities for student-athletes and coaches, and supports itself through the revenue it generates.”

Frenk mentioned the rapid transformation of college sports in recent years, propelled by name, image and likeness deals that allow athletes to earn money.

“UCLA must have an athletics model that leads — not just keeps pace,” he wrote.

Jarmond won't be around to see the debut of his last major coaching hire. Bob Chesney arrived in early December from James Madison to reinvigorate UCLA's moribund football program. The Bruins open the season at California on Saturday.
