Russell Brand has been granted bail by a London judge after facing two charges of sexual assault and rape.

Brand, 50, appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court in the British capital on Tuesday, Jan. 20 via a video link from the U.S., according to the BBC.

The hearing lasted six-minutes, the outlet reported, adding that the comedian and actor spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth.

Brand was charged in December 2025 with sexual assault and rape involving two women, per the Hollywood Reporter.

The alleged incidents occurred in London in 2009, per court documents, according to the BBC.

The Forgetting Sarah Marshall actor has a plea hearing scheduled at London's Southwark Crown Court on Feb. 17, according to Deadline.

In April of 2025, Brand was charged with five counts of assault and rape stemming from allegations from four women. The alleged assaults occurred in England between 1999 and 2005.

PEOPLE previously reported that one of the women alleged she was raped in a town in the south of England in 1999. Another alleged victim said she was indecently assaulted in London in 2004. A third woman alleged she was orally raped and sexually assaulted in 2004 while an alleged fourth victim said she was sexually assaulted in London between 2004 and 2005.

"The women who have made reports continue to receive support from specially trained officers," Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy said in a statement at the time. "The Met's investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police."

Brand pleaded not guilty to those charges in May, per the Hollywood Reporter.

"I've never engaged in non consensual activity," he said in a video shared on his social media last year, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes."

He was first accused of sexual assault in September 2023 after five women spoke about alleged incidents in a joint investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times and Channel 4 current-affairs show Dispatches.
