Jay Buchanan, the 50-year-old frontman of Rival Sons, revealed something surprising during a recent interview with Eddie Trunk on SiriusXM's Trunk Nation.

Buchanan said he worked with Bob Weir for years on a big musical project. But now, after Weir's passing, the project may never be released. Weir, 78, died on Jan. 10 due to underlying lung issues after beating cancer, per NPR.

Buchanan explained that the project is unfinished. He also said he doesn't know if it will ever be released, because it wasn't his project. He called it "very, very cool" but admitted that many collaborations don't see the light of day.

"I don't know that any of that will see the light of day," Buchanan said. "It was really a large project… and it was his project, so there's no telling."

New Solo Album Shows a Different Side of Jay Buchanan

While the Bob Weir project may stay hidden, Buchanan is moving forward with a big new plan of his own. He is releasing his debut solo album, Weapons of Beauty, on Feb. 6, 2026.

Buchanan said he has always wanted to make solo music. When Rival Sons first started, everyone expected them to release solo work. But the band got busy touring and recording, so he kept postponing it.

"I kept putting it off for years and years," he said. "Then I had enough."

To finally finish the album, Buchanan went into the Mojave Desert. He stayed in an underground, windowless bunker for three months and wrote songs alone. He said the quiet was both "terrifying and liberating."

Rival Sons Still Strong and Working on New Album

Even as Buchanan releases his solo record, Rival Sons is not slowing down. He confirmed the band plans to record a new album in 2026 and then tour in the U.K., Europe and the U.S.

"We're gonna be getting into the studio and recording another record," Buchanan said. "And then, of course, we have touring through the summer."

He also shared that the band now prefers to write songs before entering the studio. However, Buchanan also revealed that their timeline shifted because of personal reasons. His wife was diagnosed with breast cancer, so he paused plans to focus on her treatment. He said he will prioritize her health first.

Despite the delay, he still hopes the band will release a new album in 2026. He said the band's plans are flexible, and everyone supports him.
