Warren and Buttigieg scrap over ‘wine caves’ and the power of wealthy donors

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg tussled Thursday night time over high-dollar fundraisers, zinging each other over wine caves, hypocrisy and personal wealth.

In a continuation of a struggle that has roiled the Democratic presidential subject for weeks, Warren and Buttigieg traded barbs at the PBS NewsHour/POLITICO debate. “We will’t have individuals who can put down $5,000 for a verify drown out the voices of everybody else,” stated Warren, who has sworn off high-dollar fundraisers in her marketing campaign.

She made positive to notice Buttigieg’s recent fundraiser “in a wine cave filled with crystals [that] served $900-a-bottle wine.” Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and businessman Andrew Yang jumped into the pile-on too, with Yang saying his common primary revenue proposal would get extra ladies to run for office “because they don't need to go shake the cash tree within the wine cave.”

But Buttigieg punched right again, arguing that Democrats shouldn’t unilaterally disarm a potential supply of monetary help towards the GOP.

He stated he was the one non-millionaire or -billionaire on stage, and famous that Warren had taken cash from massive donors during her Senate marketing campaign: “That is the problem with issuing purity checks you can't yourself move.”

The talk’s first moments of direct confrontation shortly looped in a lot of the candidates on stage. Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) hijacked the Warren and Buttigieg back-and-forth to name for marketing campaign finance coverage reform. Sanders slammed former Vice President Joe Biden and Buttigieg for attracting the help of dozens of billionaire fundraisers.

And Biden defended himself towards Sanders’ attack: “The idea that the senator instructed, that I'm within the pocket of billionaires, when in truth they oppose the whole lot that I've ever accomplished and proceed to do,” he stated, “I've made positive from the very beginning every one among my fundraisers is open to the press, every single solitary one.”

Beneath strain from the left, Biden announced earlier Thursday that he would release the names of his prime fundraisers, after Buttigieg made the same decision earlier this month.

Businessman Tom Steyer rounded out the dialog Thursday night time by shrugging at the entire debate. “There’s somebody who is loving this dialog, and his identify’s Donald Trump,” he warned.
