Trump says he'll sign China trade deal Jan. 15

President Donald Trump stated Tuesday that he plans to sign a preliminary trade cope with China on Jan. 15 in Washington and will travel to Beijing later in 2020 to begin talks on a part two agreement.

"I will probably be signing our very giant and comprehensive Part One Commerce Cope with China on January 15," Trump wrote on Twitter. "The ceremony will take place on the White Home. Excessive degree representatives of China can be present. At a later date I will probably be going to Beijing the place talks will start on Part Two!"

The two sides announced earlier this month that they had reached a preliminary agreement on a raft of issues together with financial providers market openings, pressured know-how transfer, mental property protection and foreign money manipulation.

China, as part of the agreement, has also pledged to increase its purchases of U.S. farm items, power, manufactured merchandise and providers by about $200 billion over the subsequent two years, U.S. officials stated.

Nevertheless, Beijing has not publicly confirmed these amounts, which U.S. Commerce Representative Robert Lighthizer has stated would include $80 billion to $100 billion in agricultural purchases.

In trade, Trump canceled plans to slap a 15 % tariff on a further $160 billion value of Chinese items, together with laptops and smartphones, starting Dec. 15. He also lowered duties on one other $120 billion value of goods to 7.5 %, from 15 % previously. However he left a 25 % obligation on another $250 billion value of products in place.

U.S. officers had previously stated Lighthizer and Chinese Vice Premier Liu He would signal the agreement the primary full week of January. The South China Morning Publish reported on Monday that Liu can be coming to Washington this weekend within the expectation of signing the deal next week, however neither the White Home nor USTR confirmed that report.

There was no further word from the White House on when Trump would travel to Beijing.

Expectations are muted that the two sides will attain a extra comprehensive part two settlement masking issues corresponding to Beijing's help for state-owned enterprises and authorities subsidy packages before the November 2020 presidential election.

Nevertheless, some observers consider the 2 sides might announce further tariff reductions next yr because the part one deal is carried out.
