Despite initially opposing the revamped North American trade agreement, Sen. Sherrod Brown has thrown his help behind the USMCA now that it has higher protections for staff.
“I have never — as you point out, never — voted for a commerce settlement as a result of every trade settlement introduced to Congress is all about corporate curiosity and investor protections and company special interest protections and never about staff,” Brown (D-Ohio) stated on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday morning. “When President [Donald] Trump put out his NAFTA revision, it was the identical template. It was a pro-corporate deal that helped Washington special interests.”
The USMCA agreement with Mexico and Canada is meant to supplant NAFTA, which was negotiated and carried out in the 1990s.
“I labored with Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi and with the labor movement and with Senator [Ron] Wyden of Oregon, my companion in this, on the Brown-Wyden language which simply says these agreements must be about staff and it will mean that staff in america and with our trading companions will see their lifestyle improve.”
