Today's Orange Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal is a matchup between one of the nation's most explosive offenses (Oregon) and most dynamic defenses (Texas Tech).

Writers from The Register-Guard and Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, both part of USA TODAY Co., provided their predictions for Thursday's CFP quarterfinal matchup. The winner advances to the Peach Bowl for a semifinal showdown with either Indiana or Alabama.

1 / 30Best of bowl season: Mascots, trophies, celebrations, Gatorade bathsDefensive back Tony-Louis Nkuba #21 of the Arizona State Sun Devils celebrates by jumping into an inflatable bowl of Kellogg's Frosted Flakes after intercepting a pass against the Duke Blue Devils during the first half of the Tony The Tiger Sun Bowl game at Sun Bowl Stadium on December 31, 2025 in El Paso, TexasOregon vs Texas Tech prediction

∎ Oregon 27, Texas Tech 24: The Ducks haven't been unstoppable on offense this season, but they've been close. Led by first-round NFL draft prospect quarterback Dante Moore and an elite running attack, Oregon ranks No. 1 in the FBS with 91 plays of 20 yards or more and is fourth in both pass plays (60) and run plays (31) of 20-plus yards.

The Ducks aren't too shabby on the other side of the ball, either, though they did have a forgettable second half against James Madison that has made them look more vulnerable. Still, while the offense was dialing up explosive plays all season, the defense has been allowing very few. Oregon has allowed 33 plays of 20-plus yards, fourth fewest in the FBS. The Ducks' pass defense is a top-10 unit, ranking No. 1 in passed broken up (67), No. 2 on passes defended (80), No. 4 in opponents completion percentage (51.3%) and No. 5 in passing yards per game (158.1). — Chris Hansen, The Register-Guard

∎ Oregon 30, Texas Tech 24: Statistically, Texas Tech has one of the most balanced offenses and one of the best defenses in the country. The Red Raiders lost just once this season, and it was without their starting quarterback on the road versus Arizona State in mid-October. They will lose again on Jan. 1. The Ducks got a tune-up against an overmatched James Madison at Autzen Stadium on Dec. 20 and will be, by far, Texas Tech's best opponent of the season to date. I've got the Ducks winning a thriller over the Red Raiders on New Year's Day. — Alec Dietz, The Register-Guard

∎ Oregon 35, Texas Tech 31: Both teams are as good as advertised, but it's also fair to say the Ducks have had tougher competition, at least in relation to how talented they are. Texas Tech has dominated everyone, while Oregon has at least been challenged. The Red Raiders succumb to a lack of close games, leaving them ill-prepared for a fist fight such as this. — Nathan Giese, Lubbock Avalanche-Journal

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored 30 points in three quarters and the Oklahoma City Thunder rolled past the Portland Trail Blazers 124-95 on Wednesday night for their third straight win.

Ajay Mitchell scored 17 points off the bench, and Jalen Williams had 13 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. Chet Holmgren added 12 points, 10 rebounds and a season-high six blocks for Oklahoma City (29-5), which made 44 of 90 shots (48.9%) and converted 25 Portland turnovers into 28 points.

Gilgeous-Alexander sank 11 of 15 field goals and all seven of his foul shots. He scored at least 20 points for the 105th consecutive game. Mitchell, meanwhile, hit all four of his field goal attempts and all eight free throws.

Two-way player Sidy Cissoko scored 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting for Portland (14-20). Deni Avdija had 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, and Shaedon Sharpe added 14 points.

Oklahoma City scored 38 points in the first quarter but couldn't shake the Trail Blazers, who scored 30 and made six of seven 3-point shots.

The Thunder increased the lead to 60-44 on a short jumper by Williams midway through the second before Portland countered with nine straight points. That's when Gilgeous-Alexander took over, scoring nine points during a 13-2 run that put Oklahoma City up 73-55 at halftime.

The defending NBA champions extended the advantage to 86-60 on a layup by Gilgeous-Alexander, who sat out the fourth quarter. Back-to-back 3-pointers by Cason Wallace and Isaiah Joe early in the fourth made it 106-78.

ARLINGTON, TX — No. 10 seed Miami controlled the line of scrimmage and forced No. 2 Ohio State out of its comfort zone to score a 24-14 Cotton Bowl win and the first upset of this year's College Football Playoff.

After sneaking into the tournament as the last at-large seed, the Hurricanes proved they belonged by handling the defending national champions. The loss was the second in a row for Ohio State after a 12-0 start.

Miami running back Mark Fletcher Jr. had 90 yards on 19 carries. Carson Beck completed 19 of 26 attempts for 138 yards and added 23 yards on the ground. Defensively, the Hurricanes notched five sacks and held OSU to just 45 rushing yards.

"We keep getting better and better up front," Miami coach Mario Cristobal said. "We don't think we have arrived by any stretch, but we certainly think we're getting better. When you play a team like that that's been the number one defense in the country the entire year, you have to."

Star receiver Jeremiah Smith delivered for the Buckeyes, pulling down 157 yards on seven grabs. Julian Sayin had two interceptions, one that changed the complexion of the game, and finished with 287 yards on 22 of 35 passing with a score. Bo Jackson led OSU with 55 rushing yards.

Miami advances to the national semifinals at the Fiesta Bowl against the winner of Thursday night's Sugar Bowl between No. 3 Georgia and No. 6 Mississippi.

After both teams traded punts on the game's opening possessions, Miami put together a promising 42-yard drive that advanced to the Buckeyes' 19-yard line before Fletcher was stripped by linebacker Payton Pierce on third down to give the ball back to the Buckeyes.

Miami's offense would get back on track on its next drive. After forcing an Ohio State punt and taking over at their 17-yard line, the Hurricanes needed 13 plays to score the game's first points on Fletcher's 9-yard touchdown grab with 13:31 left in the second quarter.

One of the game's key moments came on the ensuing possession. After hitting Smith for a 59-yard gain on the first snap from scrimmage, Sayin was intercepted two plays later by Miami's Keionte Scott, who ran it back 72 yards for a pick-six and a 14-0 Miami lead with 11:49 left in the half.

"It was on film for sure, but I think in the moment, with all the skill players on one side of the ball, so, obviously, knew the ball was coming in that area," Scott said of his decision to jump the screen pass. "And then as soon as the tight end motioned, I kind of confirmed in my head -- made up in my mind that I was going at that moment."

Miami receiver Malachi Toney tries to avoid the tackle of Ohio State defensive back Jermaine Mathews Jr. during their 2025 College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Cotton Bowl.

The Buckeyes would gain some momentum before the break by clamping down on a Miami drive that reached the 30-yard line before a sack and a 6-yard loss dropped the Hurricanes out of field goal range. But after taking over at its 2-yard line and moving into Miami territory, Ohio State kicker Jayden Fielding's 49-yard try with two seconds left in the second quarter drifted left.

The 14-point deficit was the largest for the Buckeyes since its 45-23 loss to Michigan to end the 2022 regular season. The Buckeyes hadn't been held scoreless in the first half since a 31-0 loss to Clemson in the 2016 Fiesta Bowl.

Ohio State would find some answers in the locker room. Keyed by a 23-yard completion to Smith, the Buckeyes would march 82 yards in 11 plays, capped by a 1-yard Jackson touchdown run, to make the score 14-7 with 8:05 to play in the third quarter. The drive featured 35 rushing yards after OSU had managed minu-2 yards on the ground in the first half.

"I felt like it took us a while to get into the rhythm of the game," Ohio State coach Ryan Day said about the team's 25-day layoff after the Big Ten title game. "I thought we did coming out in the second half and by then it was going to take a very, very efficient second half to win the game."

Miami answered with a 49-yard field goal from Carter Davis to make it 17-7 with 3:01 remaining in the quarter. Previously, the most points the Buckeyes had allowed in a game this season was 16 in a win against Illinois.

Davis was 6 of 10 from 40-plus yards heading into Wednesday night and had missed three of four attempts in the opening round against No. 7 Texas A&M. The Hurricanes were able to move into his range after freshman receiver Malachi Toney was stripped by Buckeyes safety Caleb Downs on the previous down but then recovered his own fumble and gained another two yards.

The Buckeyes' offense would have another response on a drive bridging the third and fourth quarters. After driving to the Miami 14-yard line, Ohio Sate came up short on a Jackson run on third down and decided to go for it on fourth-and-2. Sayin delivered over the middle to Smith, who weaved through the secondary to cut the lead to 17-14 with 13:28 left in the game.

Taking over after a touchback, the Hurricanes would manage a first down via a Beck scramble. The drive then petered out, though, and Miami's punt went out at the Ohio State 25-yard line. But the Buckeyes' own herky-jerky drive slowed by a holding penalty went just six yards in seven plays and took over four minutes off the clock, giving the Hurricanes the ball at their 30-yard line with 5:56 to play.

Behind Beck and Fletcher, Miami would then deliver the knockout blow. A 70-yard drive that started with a 19-yard Fletcher run and two key third-down conversions on Beck completions — the biggest a 14-yard toss to CJ Daniels on third-and-4 at the OSU 20-yard line — ended with a 5-yard score from running back CharMar Brown to put Miami ahead 24-14 with 55 seconds left. Sayin was then intercepted by Jakobe Thomas to seal the win.

Ben Hammond came off the bench to score 10 of his career-high 30 points in the third overtime as host Virginia Tech outlasted No. 21 Virginia 95-85 in the Commonwealth Clash on Wednesday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

Christian Gurdak contributed 17 points and 19 rebounds as the injury-riddled Hokies (12-2, 1-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) overcame the loss of three starters to win their sixth straight game.

Amani Hansberry delivered 17 points and 15 rebounds for Virginia Tech, while Neoklis Avdalas added 17 points and eight rebounds.

The Hokes were without Tyler Johnson, who was on crutches with an undisclosed injury, joining Tobi Lawal (foot) and Antonio Dorn (back) on the sideline.

Malik Thomas scored 26 points and Thijs De Ridder added 22 points and 13 rebounds to pace Virginia (11-2, 0-1), which saw its six-game winning streak end.

In the decisive overtime session, the Hokies outscored the Cavaliers 17-7, with Hansberry draining a 3-pointer which gave Virginia Tech the lead for good, 85-82, with 2:24 left.

Both teams had a chance to win in the closing seconds of regulation. With five seconds left, Avdalas blocked a layup attempt by Virginia's Devin Tillis. Then, at the other end, Hammond missed a fast-break runner at the buzzer.

In the first overtime, De Ridder scrambled for a loose ball and scored on a layup with 13 seconds left to give Virginia a 68-66 lead. But Gurdak answered, cutting to the basket for a two-fisted slam with 4 seconds left.

In the second overtime, Virginia Tech led by five points with 14 seconds left. But Thomas scored six points in a span of four seconds, sandwiched around two free throws by Hammond.

Then, after another free throw by Hammond put Virginia Tech up 78-76, Chance Mallory scored at the buzzer off a missed jumper by Thomas to send it to a third overtime at 78-78.

Freshman phenom Cameron Boozer totaled a game-high 26 points and 12 rebounds for No. 6 Duke, which fought off Georgia Tech for an 85-79 victory in both teams' Atlantic Coast Conference opener on Wednesday in Durham, N.C.

Isaiah Evans added 17 points, while Cayden Boozer scored 13 for Duke (12-1, 1-0 ACC), which rebounded from its first loss of the season - an 82-81 loss to then-No. 19 Texas Tech on Dec. 20. Caleb Foster had 12 points and Patrick Ngongba II tallied 11 points and nine boards for the Blue Devils, who trailed by four at halftime.

Kowacie Reeves Jr. tied his career high with 23 points to lead Georgia Tech (9-5, 0-1), which fell to 0-4 against major-conference opponents. Jaeden Mustaf scored 11, while Lamar Washington and Chas Kelley III had 10 points apiece for the Yellow Jackets, who were outrebounded 42-28.

Duke trailed by seven with 18:38 left after Reeves' 3-pointer gave Georgia Tech a 50-43 lead. Evans and Cayden Boozer's baskets then began the Blue Devils' 9-2 run, pulling even at 52 with 16:24 remaining.

Duke held the Yellow Jackets without a field goal for nearly seven minutes, before Kelley's triple trimmed the deficit to two at the 10:44 mark.

The Blue Devils' lead grew to seven on Foster's 3-pointer with 8:14 left. Nearly four minutes later, Mustaf's trey pulled Georgia Tech within two.

Akai Fleming and Ngongba traded a pair of free throws, as Duke grabbed a 78-75 lead with 3:04 remaining. Cayden Boozer's mid-range jumper with 1:28 left gave the Blue Devils a five-point cushion.

Behind by six, Georgia Tech sliced its deficit in half on Reeves' 3-pointer with 39 seconds remaining.

Cameron Boozer made two foul shots, before Washington split a pair for Georgia Tech. Evans then calmly drilled his two free throws to seal the win.

After Fleming and Washington's back-to-back 3-pointers gave Georgia Tech a 9-3 lead, Evans' trey began a 7-0 Duke run.

Leading by a point, Georgia Tech pushed its advantage to five after Mouhamed Sylla's consecutive baskets put the visitors ahead 29-24 with 8:10 left in the first half.

Foster's second 3-pointer of the opening half gave Duke a 37-35 edge, but Mustaf's jumper and Kelley's personal 4-0 run returned the lead to the Yellow Jackets with 47 seconds remaining.

From there, Cameron Boozer's layup was answered by Reeves' mid-range jumper to close out the first half with Georgia Tech ahead 43-39.

Alex Karaban scored 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead No. 4 UConn to a 90-67 Big East win over Xavier on Wednesday in Cincinnati.

Braylon Mullins amassed 17 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Huskies (13-1, 3-0 Big East).

Malik Messina-Moore led the Musketeers (9-5, 1-2) with 16 points.

Solo Ball came back after missing one game with a wrist injury to score 17 points for the Huskies, who outshot the Musketeers 53.2% (33-of-62) to 42.9% (24-of-56).

The Huskies dominated from the 3-point arc, hitting 13 of 28 (46.4%). The Musketeers struggled from long distance all night and were just 4 of 18 (22.2%) on 3-point attempts.

Xavier was able to get within 13 early in the second half when Roddie Anderson III laid in two of his 15 points to make it 53-40.

UConn answered with a 13-2 run with Ball hitting a 3-pointer to start the run and finishing it with a three-point play off a layup for a 66-42 UConn lead with 12:21 left.

The Huskies used a 17-2 run midway through the first half to build a 43-28 lead at the break.

UConn led 16-6 when Mullins hit a 3-pointer and Karaban scored five straight points with a layup and then a three-point play off a layup for a 24-6 lead with 12:39 left.

Tarris Reed Jr. went on an eight-point run of his own two minutes later with a three-point play off a dunk and a layup on the next possession to make it 30-6.

After Pape N'Diaye scored on a layup to stop the scoreless drought, Reed collected a second three-point play off a dunk for a 33-8 UConn lead.

Xavier had five of seven first-half turnovers during the run.

The Musketeers were able to outscore the Huskies 14-10 the rest of the way with Anderson scoring nine of points.

UConn was in command at that point, however, hitting 48.4% of its first-half shots (15-of-31), including 6-of-16 from the 3-point line.

The Musketeers only shot 37.5% from the floor (12-of-32) and missed all 10 of the 3-point shots they took.

UConn outrebounded Xavier 24-15 in the first half.

The Huskies jumped in front right away, hitting 6 of 12 shots to start the game. An early 7-0 run gave the Huskies a quick 12-point lead.
