Survivor 51 host Jeff Probst reacts to the big rock-draw-that-wasn’t after one side blinked in a high-stakes game of chicken.

The host also credits the victim for taking the ouster (relatively) in stride.

Probst also weighs in on six women in a row getting voted out to start the game. That’s a lot!

The original Savu majority on the new Savu tribe seemed to have it in the proverbial bag when they walked into Tribal Council on this week’s episode of Survivor 51. And then, the unthinkable happened.

Thanks to former Toka ally Maggie Nestor showing up and handing an extra vote over to both Lewis Kelly and Danny Kilby, the duo suddenly was able to force a surprise Tribal Council tie, with four votes each on Lewis and Linnea Capobianco. That put Linnea’s allies Eric Macksoud, Sharonda Cox, Cristian Chavez on their heels, and after Kilby stood firm on his plan to go to rocks — with one of the four rock-pullers going home instead — Eric, Sharonda, and Cristian capitulated and agreed to send their ally Linnea packing rather than risk their own spot in the game.

In the latest edition of his weekly Field Notes social media post, host and showrunner Jeff Probst called the move “historic.”

“This is a great example of what playing to win looks like,” Probst writes in the Instagram post. “Kilby and Lewis made a big move that certainly could have backfired... but if you play to not lose, you’re doomed. You must play to win. Sometimes that means a risky, go-for-broke, big move. That’s what tonight was.”

Of course, Kilby had already committed to going to rocks when he decided back at camp, which gave him and Lewis the element of surprise over their opposition. They also had nothing to lose, already being in the minority against the rock-solid (slight pun intended) Savu foursome.

“Anytime you are truly willing to go to rocks, you have a massive advantage,” Probst notes. “Kilby’s willingness to draw rocks put all the burden on Eric, Sharonda, and Cristian. Would they really risk the thought of one of them drawing the wrong rock to save Linnea?”

No. No, they would not. But as I noted extensively in my recap, while that was definitely a bad look for the trio, it was not necessarily a bad move.

That’s because not only would the Savu side remain in the majority no matter what happened with the rock draw, but had they gone to rocks, there still would have been a 75 percent chance one of the Savus went home anyway, because they were picking three out of the four rocks. So why risk immediate elimination on a non-game-changing vote with 75 percent odds you lose an alliance partner anyway when you can guarantee your own safety and still go back to camp in the majority? Anyway, just a thought.

Still, a massive bummer for Linnea, who watched her alliance partners fold right in front of her face.

“Given the shock of what went down, I thought Linnea handled it really well,” Probst writes. “Being voted out is always very difficult to accept, but if you’re able to find some kind of silver lining, in this case, being a part of history, it certainly cushions the blow... a bit.”

Of course, Linnea’s ouster means the tally of women voted out to start the season now has reached six, with the only man to exit, Rob Antonson, quitting the game.

‘Six straight women voted out,” Probst writes. “Still no man voted out this season. I am noting this only to remind that there are so many factors that go into a tribe dynamic and any vote at Tribal that sometimes things that seem shocking from the outside — how could they vote out another woman? — are not at all reflective of what is really happening in the game.”

A game that Linnea is unfortunately no longer in.
