More than 220 complaints have been filed with the state's new NC Fuel Check system from drivers who say gas stations aren't passing along savings from North Carolina's gas tax holiday. The tax suspension took effect last Friday, temporarily eliminating the state's 41-cent-per-gallon gas tax and requiring gas stations to pass those savings along to customers.

But some drivers say they aren't seeing a significant difference at the pump. "You don't see the significance of the price change. It's burning faster and it's still high. So, it's really getting deep into your pockets," said driver Raul Oquendo.

The NC Fuel Check complaint system launched Monday, shortly after the gas tax holiday was signed into law. Since then, drivers have reported stations across North Carolina over concerns about gas prices. ABC11 reviewed several complaints involving stations in the Triangle and found that prices at the pump had dropped at multiple locations.

In Durham, a complaint filed Thursday claimed a station was listing regular gas at $4.14 per gallon. ABC11 found the price still listed at $4.14 on the station's sign. However, the price at the pump was $3.74 per gallon - 40 cents lower. An employee told ABC11 the $4.14 price reflected what customers would pay without the suspended gas tax.

Other stations also showed lower prices following complaints:

Raleigh: A station off Capitol Boulevard was reported to have regular gas priced at $4.05 per gallon on Wednesday. By Thursday, the price had dropped to $3.59, a decrease of 46 cents.

Fuquay-Varina: A station reported at $3.99 per gallon on Wednesday was selling gas for $3.79 on Thursday, a 20-cent decrease.

Leesville Road: A station reported at $4.20 per gallon on Tuesday was selling gas for $3.75 on Thursday, a 45-cent decrease.

Wake Forest: A station reported at $3.99 per gallon on Wednesday was selling gas for $3.69 the following day, a 30-cent decrease.

The price checks show lower prices at the pump at these locations, even as complaints continue to come in.

North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson office says it reviews complaints submitted through NC Fuel Check and will investigate when warranted. Businesses found to be violating the law could face penalties of up to $5,000 per transaction. Drivers who believe a gas station is not passing along the savings can submit a complaint through the state's NC Fuel Check system.
