Queen Camilla’s Prince of Wales feathers brooch was once part of a necklace worn by Princess Diana.
Diana received the brooch in its necklace setting as a wedding gift from Elizabeth the Queen Mother, but it’s been in the royal family since 1862.
Kate Middleton has also worn the diamond and emerald brooch, most recently in September 2025.
One of Queen Camilla’s most dazzling brooches has a connection to Princess Diana: it was fashioned from one of the late royal’s wedding gifts.
When Diana married Prince Charles (now King Charles) in 1981, she received an heirloom necklace from Elizabeth the Queen Mother (aka Queen Elizabeth’s mother and Charles’s grandmother). The glittering emerald pendant had belonged to the Crown since the 19th century, according to U.K. jeweler Steven Stone.
Diana debuted the piece on a 1982 trip to the Royal Opera House. After her death in 1997, the necklace returned to the royal collection. It would take years for the pendant to reappear on a different royal: Charles’s second wife, Camilla. (Famously, Camilla had an affair with the now-king during his marriage to Diana.) The queen consort wore the emerald as a brooch to Ladies Day at Cheltenham Festival in 2012.

In light of their historic tension, Camilla’s refashioning of Diana’s necklace was viewed by some royal watchers as a shocking move. Others were quick to point out that jewels from the royal collection are regularly refashioned and worn by multiple people, such as the Cullinan III and IV brooch that Queen Mary (Queen Elizabeth II’s grandmother) once wore as a necklace.
Here’s everything to know about the brooch Queen Camilla made from one of Princess Diana’s necklaces, including its estimated worth.
The 19th-century brooch originally belonged to Queen Alexandra.

According to the jewelry experts at Steven Stone, the Queen Mother’s wedding present to Diana originated in 1863. Its first owner was Queen Alexandra, who held the title of Princess of Wales from 1863 to 1901.
Alexandra received the brooch—part of a suite of emerald jewels—from the ‘Ladies of North Wales’ upon the occasion of her marriage to the future King Edward VII (then Prince of Wales); its three feathers and central coronet are meant to represent the badge of the Prince of Wales, per Vogue.

Steven Stone estimated that the Prince of Wales feathers brooch features 4 carats of white diamonds and a suspended 3-carat cabochon emerald. With that much bling, it’s no wonder the piece remains in the royal jewelry rotation today.

It’s unclear when the brooch became a necklace pendant, but Diana only wore it in this setting rather than as a pin. The piece’s first appearance (without the drop emerald) was during a December 1982 Royal Opera House visit, where Diana donned a red Belville Sassoon dress. She later wore it at a 1986 gala performance of the play Love For Love, pairing it with a blue-green sequined Catherine Walker gown and emerald drop earrings.
Five years later, the necklace reemerged when the Princess of Wales attended a gala dinner in Toronto. The glittering jewelry moment occurred during an official visit Diana, Charles, and sons Prince William and Harry made to Canada in 1991. On that occasion, she paired the heirloom necklace with the Spencer Tiara she’d worn on her wedding day.
Camilla’s refashioned brooch is worth an estimated $137,000.

With its carat count, royal connections, and age, the Prince of Wales feathers brooch is a cut above many of the baubles in Queen Camilla’s impressive collection. Per Steven Stone’s Maxwell Stone, it’s worth around £100,000, or $137,000.
“This remarkable brooch features approximately four carats of white diamonds, arranged in 18 individual stones, and is crowned by a breathtaking three-carat cabochon-cut green emerald pendant,” Stone wrote in the jeweler’s Crisscut magazine. While Camilla appeared to debut the brooch for the first time in 2012 at the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival, she reportedly received it upon her marriage to Prince Charles in 2005, according to HuffPost. She’s since worn it to the 2019 celebration of Charles’s 50th anniversary as Prince of Wales.
Princess Kate has also worn the brooch.

Following in the tradition of wives of the current Prince of Wales wearing the brooch, Kate Middleton donned the piece for the first time in November 2022. She used it to add a touch of sparkle to her magenta Emilia Wickstead coat dress. She wore the meaningful piece again (without the emerald) in September 2025, when President Donald Trump made a state visit to the U.K.

Kate wore the brooch a third time in 2025 as she welcomed Germany’s president, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, on behalf of King Charles. This time, she paired it with a Sarah Burton blue coat (a rewear from Christmas 2023, per People), a black Burberry dress, and heeled boots. The princess more pointedly referenced Diana with her other accessory choices, including a pair of sapphire and diamond earrings that previously belonged to the royal.
