Spencer Pratt is sharing a peek behind the curtain of his life on The Hills in his new memoir, The Guy You Loved to Hate: Confessions from a Reality TV Villain.
In the memoir, which was released on Tuesday, Jan. 27 with Simon & Schuster, Pratt, now 42, details devising his plan to join the cast of the hit reality show in its second season while pursuing a relationship with his now-wife, Heidi Montag.
Pratt and his childhood friend, Brody Jenner, joined the cast of the MTV show in 2007 while they were in talks for their own separate show on the network.
"They were offering me $15K-$20K an episode, depending on screen time," Pratt said of The Hills, adding that there were "renegotiation clauses," built into his contract in the event that his appearances turned into something more.

"Back then, reality stars got paid," Pratt wrote. "Today? Not so much. People do reality shows for free these days, just for social media followers."
At the time The Hills contract was presented to him, Pratt said that he and Jenner were "inches away from closing our completely separate deal with MTV for a project they called Banking on Brody."

"We'd already shot the pilot episode, which featured scenes of me following Brody around Beverly Hills while he shopped with his then-unknown stepsister, Khloé Kardashian," Pratt wrote.
However, when it came time to officially sign on for Banking on Brody, Pratt said that he suggested they appear on The Hills first prior to launching their show so audiences would know their names.

"We'll deliver the conflict The Hills desperately needs," Pratt said he told an MTV exec. "The villain every story requires. We'll be the reason people actually tune in."
The solo Jenner project never panned out, but Pratt's time on The Hills turned him into one of the most notorious reality TV villains of all time. He and Montag were known by the couple name "Speidi," and his public feud with the show's star, Lauren Conrad, continued for years.
"The president of MTV, Tony DiSanto, personally told me that if the Speidi drama hadn't happened, The Hills would have been canceled after season 2," Pratt claimed in the new book.
