Pence rejects calls to declassify new impeachment testimony

Vice President Mike Pence’s counsel rejected House Democrats’ request to declassify details of a Sept. 18 call between Pence and Ukraine’s president, calling the request illegitimate because the impeachment inquiry has concluded.

In a letter to House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Pence’s lawyer, Matthew Morgan, stated it “serves no objective” to declassify supplemental testimony from one in every of Pence’s nationwide safety aides, as Schiff had demanded.

“At this level, the Intelligence Committee’s oversight authority is restricted to those areas by which it might probably legislate or applicable,” Morgan wrote to Schiff, who pressed Pence final week to declassify supplemental testimony from one among the vice chairman’s nationwide safety aides, Jennifer Williams.

The additional testimony, Schiff stated, centers on Pence’s Sept. 18 telephone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Earlier Wednesday, Schiff formally transmitted the categorized testimony to the House Judiciary Committee, which started debating articles of impeachment late Wednesday night time.

Morgan additionally appeared to rebuke Williams, writing that “the contents of a categorised call with a overseas head of state ought to never have been discussed in an unclassified committee hearing or an unclassified deposition.”

The letter is the second rebuke by the vice chairman’s workplace to House Democrats’ requests for assistance with the continued impeachment inquiry. The primary got here in mid-October, when Morgan stated the Home’s inquiry was invalid as a result of there had not been a House vote to authorize it — a position a federal decide recently rejected as pointless.

Democrats have made no pronouncements that their impeachment investigation has formally concluded — in reality, Schiff has indicated he would contemplate filing “supplemental studies” to the Judiciary Committee if extra proof emerged within the fast-moving investigation.

Nevertheless, Democrats revealed two articles of impeachment arising from their 300-page Ukraine report on Tuesday and are expected to think about them on the Home flooring next week.

“Your request, coming after the completion of your report, serves no reputable legislative or impeachment inquiry objective,” Morgan wrote.

A spokesman for Schiff did not immediately reply to a request for remark.

Williams offered her further testimony to the committee on Nov. 26, every week after she testified publicly. Based on Schiff, Williams' letter provides “corroborative” evidence for the impeachment investigation.

Throughout her Nov. 7 deposition, Williams testified that on the Sept. 18 call, Pence was merely following up to a Sept. 1 meeting with Zelensky and prematurely of a gathering between Trump and Zelensky at the United Nations in New York scheduled for the following week. She described it as a “very constructive call” and stated there was no point out of any of the investigations that Trump had been asking Zelensky to pursue.

Pence’s office knocked Schiff for together with in his committee’s report — released Dec. three — a claim that Democrats had asked for a “declassification assessment” of Williams’ letter. Actually, Morgan stated, Pence’s workplace didn't obtain the request until three days later, on Dec. 6, and still has not acquired Williams’ supplemental letter itself.
