Biden campaign demands networks stop booking Giuliani


Joe Biden’s presidential marketing campaign demanded on Sunday that major TV networks cease reserving Rudy Giuliani, accusing President Donald Trump’s private lawyer of spreading “false, debunked conspiracy theories” on behalf of his shopper.

“When you typically reality examine his statements in real time throughout your discussions, that is not sufficient,” Biden senior adviser Anita Dunn and deputy campaign supervisor Kate Bedingfield wrote in a letter obtained by POLITICO. “By giving him your air time, you're allowing him to introduce increasingly unhinged, unfounded and desperate lies into the nationwide dialog.”

“We write to demand that in service to the details, you no longer e-book Rudy Giuliani,” they continued, suggesting that the Trump surrogate has “demonstrated that he'll knowingly and willingly lie to be able to advance his own narrative.”

Giuliani has been at the forefront of pushing the unsupported allegation that Biden, while vice chairman, urged the firing of Ukraine’s prime prosecutor in March 2016 to profit his son Hunter Biden, who was on the board of a serious power company in the country.


The Obama administration, together with other Western nations, the International Financial Fund and Ukrainian reformers, supported the firing of then-prosecutor Viktor Shokin, who was seen as not aggressively pursuing corruption instances.

Giuliani appeared on Sunday on ABC’s “This Week” and CBS’s “Face the Nation,” with the exhibits’ hosts, George Stephanopoulos and Margaret Brennan, respectively, among the many recipients of the letter from the Biden campaign.

The letter was sent to greater than a dozen TV information executives and journalists, together with the presidents of CNN (Jeff Zucker), Fox Information (Suzanne Scott), MSNBC (Phil Griffin), ABC Information (James Goldston), NBC Information (Noah Oppenheim) and CBS News (Susan Zirinsky), and hosts comparable to CNN’s Jake Tapper, NBC’s Chuck Todd and Fox Information’ Chris Wallace.

A CNN spokesperson declined to remark concerning the Biden campaign’s letter. Representatives from Fox News, MSNBC, ABC, NBC and CBS didn't instantly reply to requests for comment.

The Biden marketing campaign has aggressively pushed back on reporting of the Ukraine allegations in hopes of not making the identical mistakes as Hillary Clinton’s workforce in responding to coverage of e mail controversies that dogged her candidacy.


Though political campaigns are recognized to dispute protection they think about unfair, it’s uncommon to demand that a particular visitor not appear on air.

Within the letter, the Biden workforce argued that “Giuliani shouldn't be a public official, and holds no public office that might entitle him to opine on the nation’s airwaves.” And so, they continued, “the choice to legitimize his increasingly outlandish and unhinged fees and conduct — calling it ‘news’ — rests solely with you."

The marketing campaign applauded hosts for pushing again on Giuliani’s claims in real time, but prompt that it wasn’t enough.

“Giving Rudy Giuliani worthwhile time on your air to push these lies within the first place is a disservice to your audience and a disservice to journalism,” they wrote. “We ask that you simply no longer guide him on your air.”
