After Another Mass Shooting, Texas Lawmaker Slammed for Saying Solution to Gun Violence Is 'Praying for Protection'

A Texas lawmaker isn’t backing down from his controversial stance, within the wake of another mass shooting, that altering gun laws can be ineffective to stop more violence — and that “praying for cover” was the one answer.

Rep. Matt Schaefer, a Republican who represents District 6 within the Texas Home of Representatives, spoke out on social media not lengthy after authorities stated a gunman killed seven individuals and injured 22 more during a capturing spree in Odessa and Midlands on Saturday.

“’Do something!’ is the statement we maintain listening to. As an elected official with a vote in Austin, let me inform you what I'm NOT going to do. Schaefer continued, writing that he stated “NO” to the next: no to pink flag pre-crime legal guidelines, universal background checks, bans on assault rifles and high-capacity magazines and obligatory gun buybacks — thought several of those coverage modifications are broadly supported by People, if not Schaefer’s constituents.

“YES to your God-given, constitutionally protected rights,” Schaefer wrote. “YES to God, and NO to more government intrusions.”

Democratic National Committee member Khary Penebaker performed off of Schaefer’s personal rhetoric, writing, “I say NO to Matt Schaefer. His soul is wholly owned by the @NRA.”

“Hey Rep. Matt Schaefer if you wish to receives a commission for saying prayers develop into a Pastor,” a Twitter consumer wrote. “As an elected official your personal spiritual beliefs don’t belong in Government.”

The newest Texas mass capturing which impressed Schaefer’s submit got here 4 weeks after a gunman stormed a Walmart in El Paso and killed 22 individuals.

Schaefer, a Navy veteran, was elected to workplace in November 2012.
