- Jason Derulo took a tumble down a small flight of stairs while performing in London on Saturday.

- The "Slow Low" singer was performing a ballad on stage at the Summertime Ball when he tripped, slid down a few steps, and picked himself back up, saying, "I survived!"

- Derulo has long been the subject of false claims that he slipped down the stairs at the Met Gala.

Life doesn't imitate art anymore, it imitates memes.

Jason Derulo took a tumble down a set of stairs while performing at the Summertime Ball in London on Saturday. Videos taken by audience members show Derulo crooning a series of soft notes during a stirring ballad, thoughtfully looking up at the sky, smiling at his cheering fans, nodding, and sensiblly looking down to see where he was about to step.

It didn't help.

Derulo reeled backward after his foot gave way on the step below, sending him tumbling to the ground. With a beaming smile, he then held a finger up, asking for the audience's patience as he recovered. "I survived!" he announced, leading to another volley of cheers.

If reading all that kicks off a wave of déjà vu, you aren't alone. Hordes of netizens, including many of Derulo's own fans, have become convinced that the award-winning singer, songwriter, and dancer took a memorable spill down the Met Gala steps. Not during any particular year — an image described as Derulo falling at the annual New York City-set fashion gala has circulated every year, for years online.

The image is actually an attendee executing a stunt on the steps at Cannes' Palais des Festivals et des Congrès in 2015. But it still has half the internet convinced that Derulo is just that accident-prone.

Derulo addressed the misidentification at the time, writing on the social media site then known as Twitter, "Lmao I'm at rehearsal in LA. Fuq ya'll! Lol."

Nearly a decade later, a case of mistaken identity had become a rampant meme that Derulo had to address again. "There's still people on the planet that think that I'd fall down the steps. Somebody that's living under a rock that hasn't seen [it] before," he told PEOPLE in 2023. "I've definitely seen some messages like, 'Are you OK?' But yeah, every single year, a couple of times a year... it's not even just the Met Gala anymore! It's kind of inching its way onto other events, but it's hilarious."
