Amanda Seyfried is weighing in on Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle controversy from last year.
Seyfried had a "great time" on the Housemaid press tour with her costar, who "seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can't be f---ing easy, where she found herself."
Sweeney's "great jeans" campaign for the fashion brand courted controversy over claims that it subtly played on racist tropes.
Sydney Sweeney has great friends.
The life of the 28-year-old Euphoria breakout was engulfed in controversy last year over a campaign for the fashion brand American Eagle that some accused of trafficking in racist tropes.
Until now, Amanda Seyfried, her costar in the 2025 blockbuster The Housemaid, had remained mum about the controversy despite embarking on a globe-trotting press tour with Sweeney as it unfolded around her. But in a profile published Monday in British GQ, Seyfried finally spoke to her experience as one of Sweeney's closest collaborators at the height of the scandal.

"We had a great time on the press tour... We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can't be f---ing easy, where she found herself," Seyfried shared. "I have heard her stand up for herself, but I think she found herself between a rock and a hard place."
The furor around Sweeney's July campaign for American Eagle jeans centered on its title: "Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans." The intentional interplay between the word "jeans" and the word "genes" (one ad even sees Sweeney hang a poster that has the word "genes" crossed out and replaced with "jeans") stuck out to some as, in the words of TikTok user jessbritvich, "more than a cheeky wordplay, it's a dog whistle... it's saying that Sydney has a great body and therefore great genes, a product of genetic superiority. Specifically saying these white, thin, traditionally feminine bodies are not just aspirational but symbols of morality, tradition, purity."
For a long time, Sweeney didn't comment on the uproar around the campaign, but broke her silence with a glancing comment in November, telling GQ, "I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I'm literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life."

When asked how it felt to see Donald Trump refer to the campaign as "fantastic," Sweeney replied, "It was surreal."

"I'm just there," Seyfried continued in her own conversation with the men's magazine. "I don't talk to her about it unless she wants to talk about it. I don't want to be a source of anything but whatever you need. You need some fun, you need to laugh, you need cake with me? That's fine… at the same time, I'm like, 'We've got to promote this movie and I can be a safe space.'"
Seyfried further praised her costar for being able to think of others through the strain of scandal, noting how Sweeney "brought me all these cupcakes from Magnolia Bakery and gave me this most beautiful bracelet" on her birthday.
Sweeney is on board to return for a Housemaid sequel, though Seyfried's participation is not yet clear. In March, Kirsten Dunst became the latest to join the sequel cast.
