One woman turned to TikTok with a heartfelt mission: to reconnect with a long-lost friend.
Amy, 28, who lives in the United Kingdom, had been pen pals with a girl named Hana from Egypt after the two connected through an online forum in the early 2000s. After years of sending letters back and forth, the pair eventually lost touch around 2008.
More than a decade later, in 2024, Amy experienced a profound loss when her mother died. While sorting through old storage boxes, she tells PEOPLE she came across one of Hana's letters — a small but powerful discovery that brought a flood of forgotten memories rushing back.
Moved by the moment, Amy decided to post the letter on TikTok, hoping the internet might help her find her childhood friend once again.
"TikTok, please do your thing and help me find my pen pal from nearly 20 years ago," she wrote in the video.
The post quickly struck a chord, amassing more than 7 million views and nearly 2,000 comments.
"I posted the video without expecting much, and suddenly thousands of people were not only watching but actively trying to help," Amy tells PEOPLE exclusively. "I was overwhelmed by the response — especially the comments."
She says many viewers shared their own stories of childhood pen pals, sparking what felt like a collective moment of nostalgia. "People were reflecting on a slower, more thoughtful way of connecting," she explains.
Then came the moment Amy never expected.
"HAII AMYY ♥️♥️tiktok did its thing and I couldn't be more excited 🥺♥️," Hana commented on the video.
"She actually found me," Amy explains. "It was hard to keep track of all the comments, but she commented on the video and sent me a message request. When I realized who it was, I was in disbelief — it felt like a part of my childhood had suddenly come back into my life."
Now reunited, the two have exchanged addresses once again and plan to start writing letters — just like they did years ago.
"It feels like coming full circle," Amy says. "I don't have any expectations. I'm just grateful we've reconnected."
Looking back, Amy hopes the story reminds people of a different era of connection.
"I hope it brings back a sense of nostalgia — a reminder that not everything has to be instant to be meaningful," she says. "It was a slower time, when connection felt more personal and intentional. I'm just really grateful for the kindness and shared nostalgia this sparked."
