After Cooper (Elias Leacock) and Toby (Billy Christos Jr.) come clean to Elizabeth (Erin Krakow), she, the boys, and their parents go to Nathan (Kevin McGarry) and Bill (Jack Wagner) to tell them what happen. After the kids leave, Nathan lets Joe (Viv Leacock) and Minnie (Natasha Burnett) know that if they did unintentionally start the fire that it would go on their records but they wouldn't be charged. Bill warned Joe and Minnie that they may be liable for all the property damage if the kids were found to be the cause to be responsible. Nathan later tells Elizabeth he still has to list the kids in his report but because they are minors he can redact their names.

Allie (Jaeda LilyMiller) notices Nathan with a new saddle, but he tells her that Oliver (JacobShoemay) turns 18 on the weekend and the saddle is his new work saddle. Upon learning it's his birthday, Allie scampers off to make plans for a celebration.

In planning Oliver's birthday party, Allie has invited all the kids from Benson Hills, but none of them are coming after it appears that kids from Hope Valley might be the culprits.

Based on Molly's (Johannnah Newmarch) eyewitness account, Bill and Nathan question A. J. McGinty (Kevin McNulty) on entering the forest with what appeared to be a can of kerosene the day of the fire. We soon discover that it wasn't a can of fuel at all. It was McGinty's beloved cat, Mr. Mittens! He buried it in a can so that it could rest in peace and not be scavenged by animals in the forest. He then tells them that he was at the Shivering Timbers bar in Benson Hills drinking his sorrow away over Mr. Mittens and that they could ask the bartender there. Nathan locates the bartender in Buxton who is able to corroborate A. J.'s story and he's is cleared of any wrongdoing which leaves the kids.

Worried that they'll need to hire a lawyer for Cooper, Minnie looks to increase her cash flow with her side hustle selling jam at the merchantile. They already have to come up with the tuition money for Angela's (Vienna Leacock) college so the financial burden is weighing heavily on her.

Minnie stops by the merchantile to see if Ned (Hrothgar Mathews) and Florence (Loretta Walsh) can sell more of her jam. If the kids did start the wildfire and the family becomes liable, the Canfields are going to need all the income they can get to pay for everything. Minnie is trying to work as many side hustles she can think of to generate income. This is old-school, pioneer days Etsy.

When Joe tells Minnie of the town hall meeting, she declines to go as she only wants to deal with things she can control right now. She mentions that if they need a lawyer it will be expensive. Joe tells her they need to put their faith in God's hands to take of things and she said she can only work with the hands God gave her. Cooper hears all of this.

Upon hearing his parents' conversation, Cooper makes the hard decision to leave home, but Minnie stops him. He tells her he's supposed to be the easy one. With Angela and school and the church, he doesn't want to be a burden on them and it's better that he goes. She tells him he's a light and that's he's not a burden and that he's loved.

The rumor mill churns in the classroom over the culprit of the wildfires. Elizabeth tries to stave the gossip, but it's hard to stop once the ball gets rolling. She suggests to Nathan that if the community hears it directly from him, maybe it will quell some of the gossip.

A town hall meeting is called where Nathan and Bill informed everyone, including the displaced residents of Benson Hills that McGinty was cleared of the fire but when someone from Benson Hills asked about a Hope Valley kid possibly starting the fire and that one of them might be Nathan's daughter, the residents are in an uproar. Elizabeth tries to bring order to the meeting by reminding them that when they arrived, Hope Valley welcomed them with open arms and they became a community at that point. Does laying blame help? If there kids unintentionally started the fire, then what?

Mike (Ben Rosenbaum) and Mei (Amanda Wong) discover Maisie (Samantha Ferris) donating not just the clothes they set aside for charity but other items Maisie deemed unfashionable including the jacket Mike wore to their wedding and the matching hats they bought on their honeymoon! Mei asked if he was going to say anything to his sister, but Mike said he had to choose his battles, and this wasn't one of them. Mei wondered if any of them were.

Later, Mike finally stands up to Maisie and she quietly listens and asks what his terms are. He tells her he's going to well all shades of blue and he wants her to come to Oliver's party and when she declines, he insists that she come because she's a leader and if she goes, the rest of Benson Hills will follow.

Rosemary (Pascale Hutton) informed Lee (Kavan Smith) that McGinty wasn't the culprit and had been cleared though the boys were not, but Lee isn't sure if he can forgive the guy for stirring up trouble in the first place.

McGinty got denied for a loan to rebuild his ranch. He tells Lee that he got his wish – he's got no ranch, no insurance, and no loan. He's ruined. Lee says nothing.

Lee finds Joe in the church and the two have a heart to heart about forgiveness. Joe tells Lee that maybe Lee should consider forgiving McGinty since he was willing to forgive Cooper and Toby. Lee just doesn't think he can forgive him and Joe doles out some words of wisdom, "Mercy means the most when it's the hardest to give."

Lucas (Chris McNally) announces he's running for another term for governor and promises the rebuild of Benson Hills will happen in one year. He promises that the rebuild of Benson Hills will be done within one year and is honest with his constituents that it might mean raising taxes. He's going to be straight with them. Edie (Miranda MacDougall) takes notice.

It's Oliver's Birthday!

Everyone from Hope Valley is there for Oliver's party but no one from Benson Hills is until Maisie shows up. Then residents from Benson Hills begin to trickle in. Allie brings Oliver over from their planned horse ride to his first ever birthday party. When Oliver notices Toby and Cooper aren't there he makes his excuses and runs to find them. He finds them skipping stones like he taught them over the summer. He tells them part of having a birthday party is being with your friends so if they're not going then he's not going. They agree to go, but once there the boys confess to accidentally starting the fire. A hushed silence falls over the crowd. Maisie jumps in and recalls a tale of how she's made mistakes in her past also and who hasn't? Oliver says the same and reminds everyone they're there for a party.

Allie gives Oliver his birthday present – a book of poetry by Ralph Waldo Emerson. Oliver happens to have a gift for Allie as well – a belated birthday present he's been holding on for a while. It's a beautiful silver wolf brooch.

At the beginning of the episode, Lee and Gwen (Alex MacIsaac) bonded over woodworking in the last episode and now have made a dollhouse together for Goldie (Ellie Sweiss) along with a wooden sword for Gwen. Lee tells Rosemary he really enjoyed getting back to making something with his hands which sparked an idea. With all the construction companies trying to take advantage of the Benson Hills community by jacking up their prices, Lee had the idea of expanding the lumber business into a construction company.

At the bottom of the episode, we're on McGinty's land, with A.J. trying to salvage what little he can from the ruins of his home. Lee comes by with a crew and an offer. He wants to build McGinty a cabin but A.J. doesn't want his charity. Lee tells him it's not charity as he would use it as a model home to show it to prospective clients. A.J. agrees and Rosemary also has another gift for him – a new kitten named Dr. Socks! A.J. takes a shine to his new feline companion immediately as Lee and his crew start laying the foundation for McGinty's new home.
