Rachel McAdams recalls the late Diane Keaton, who played her mom in the 2005 movie *The Family Stone*, sharing that even she — the star of movies such as *Annie Hall*, *Baby Boom*, *The Godfather*, and *Something's Gotta Give* — worried about her performance.
"I have great moments of self-doubt in every job," McAdams told *Variety* about receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. "I remember Diane Keaton saying to me during *The Family Stone* that she still felt like acting didn't come easily to her. I was so surprised by that because she's so effortless and she gives so much to it. But I still don't feel like I have the art of acting figured out."
McAdams also referenced Keaton, who died Oct. 11 at 79 of what her family later said was pneumonia, during the ceremony held Tuesday.

"I'd like to thank the stars up above [and] down here, the legendary working actors who I was given the great gift to learn from, the ones who are no longer with us," she said. "To name a few, the pioneering Gena Rowlands, the prolific Sam Shepard" — both of whom were in 2004's *The Notebook — *"and my beloved Diane Keaton, who took me under her wing like I was her own daughter."
Keaton also costarred with McAdams in the 2010 movie *Morning Glory*, in which they shared the screen with Harrison Ford.

"She taught me that no matter how long you've been doing this, you have to leave everything you've got on the table," McAdams shared. "Each performance, you must muster up as much love as you possibly can. And then you'll only feel like a dum-dum idiot half the time in life."
But it's *The Family Stone*, about a large family meeting the son's love interest at Christmas, that has become a staple, at least at the end of the year, for many. Also costarring Craig T. Nelson, Dermot Mulroney, Luke Wilson, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Claire Danes, the movie takes place during what turns out to be the family's final Christmas together. Keaton's character, family matriarch Sybil, is quietly struggling with cancer. McAdams portrays sister Amy.

McAdams explained in the interview that, no matter who she's working with, her goal is to keep audiences guessing.
"I try not to repeat myself," the star of films such as *Spotlight *and *Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret * said. "I try to do something that feels slightly out of reach, something I'm not sure I'll be good at because I think the most interesting work comes from that sweet spot."
She will next appear in director Sam Raimi's thriller *Send Help*, which opens Jan. 30 in theaters.
