It's been 40 years since Back to the Future became a box office hit, but despite the film's massive success, Michael J. Fox still has a few regrets — not about the movie itself, but about what he never said to one of his co-stars.

In his memoir Future Boy, Fox says it wasn't until years later, and after rewatching the film, that he truly appreciated Crispin Glover's performance as George McFly.

As reported by Female First UK, the actor says revisiting the film while writing his book prompted him to write a letter to Glover, after realizing how much depth he had missed during the rush of production.

"Your performance is richer and deeper every time I see it. In fact, I skip over my bits to watch yours. Granted, we didn't talk much during production, so I never had the chance to say that you are a brilliant actor, and I was thrilled to work with you," Fox wrote in the tribute.

Glover did not return for Back to the Future Part II or Back to the Future Part III, with Jeffrey Weissman taking over the role of George McFly.

Fox writes that making Back to the Future while leading Family Ties meant juggling two major roles at once. Despite working with veterans like Christopher Lloyd, Glover stood out.

"I knew Crispin Glover prior to Back to the Future," Fox writes. "I wouldn't, however, say I was prepared to act with him. There's no way to prepare for Crispin."

Fox notes that Lloyd's theater training kept him tied in the script, while Glover performed almost on instinct. "I never knew what Crispin was going to say or do. I'm not sure he knew, either," Fox recalls.

According to Fox, Glover's independence occasionally brought challenges behind the scenes, as his strong views on the character "often caused tension" with screenwriter Bob Gale and director Robert Zemeckis.

"Nobody puts Crispin in a box," Fox writes. "As George McFly, Crispin had his own ideas as to how and where his character should move."

Looking back, Fox says any clashes were outweighed by the performance itself, describing Glover as "phenomenal in the role."
