Mitch McConnell admits Trump may not actually support the gun legislation he said he wanted

Within the wake of another collection of mass shootings, President Donald Trump has repeatedly waffled and wavered on whether or not to take any action to stop the epidemic of gun violence in America. NRA-backed Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has long opposed any such progress, stated Tuesday he'll wait and see if Trump truly means any of the issues he stated in public earlier than scheduling any Senate votes.

After mass shootings in El Paso, Texas; Dayton, Ohio; and Gilroy, California, left dozens of people lifeless, Trump — who benefited from more than $29 million in NRA spending in his 2016 race — initially stated he needed to make sure that all gun purchases required background checks.

“Frankly, we'd like intelligent background checks,” Trump informed reporters in early August. “I spoke to Mitch McConnell yesterday…. He is completely on board,” the president claimed.

But after talking with NRA officers, Trump changed his tune. Later in August, he reminded the nation that “we have already got lots of background checks.”

In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday — days after one other mass capturing in Odessa, Texas, left at least seven individuals lifeless — McConnell made it clear he doesn’t consider Trump’s public statements imply a lot of something. McConnell stated he would wait and see where the president landed earlier than committing to something.

The self-described Senate “grim reaper” sometimes blocks all legislation from even arising for a vote, and stated that a “dialogue about what to do on the gun difficulty within the wake of those horrendous shootings” is ongoing.

“I stated a number of weeks ago that if the president took a place on the bill in order that we knew we might truly be making a regulation and never simply having serial votes, I’d be completely happy to place it on the floor,” McConnell stated. “The administration is within the means of learning what they’re ready to help, if anything, and I anticipate to get an answer to that this week. If the president is in favor of a variety of things he has mentioned brazenly and publicly and I know we'll move it and it’ll develop into regulation, I’ll put it on the ground.”

McConnell once objected to presidents who don't truly help the issues they say they help in public. In 1993, when giving his party’s response to President Bill Clinton’s weekly radio tackle, McConnell — then in his second six-year Senate time period — complained, “Through the presidential campaign, Invoice Clinton promised to reinvent authorities. As an alternative, Clinton has spent the final three months reinventing his campaign promises.”
