Icons deserve their flowers, but Barbara Eden could use a get-well card instead.

The Golden Globe-nominated actress and "I Dream of Jeannie" star, who was scheduled to appear at the Cinecon Classic Film Festival over the weekend, abruptly pulled out of the event after falling ill, the festival announced on social media Saturday, Sept. 5.

"We're sorry to share that, due to a sudden illness, Barbara Eden will no longer be able to appear in person at Cinecon tonight," the statement read. Additional details on Eden's condition were not shared.

Eden, 95, was set to receive the Cinecon Legacy Award for her career in film and television. Other honorees included Lainie Kazan, Nancy Kwan and Anna Maria Alberghetti.

Actor Pat Boone, who costarred with Eden in the 1961 film "All Hands on Deck," accepted the award on her behalf following a screening of the film, according to Cinecon Classic Film Festival's statement.

"Barbara is deeply regretful that she had to cancel at the last minute, as she had been very much looking forward to seeing everyone and celebrating with us," the statement concluded. "We know how many of you were excited to welcome Barbara. We appreciate your understanding and join you in sending her our best wishes for a speedy recovery."

USA TODAY has reached out to Eden's representatives for comment.

Barbara Eden interview: Why 'I Dream of Jeannie' star counted herself out for iconic role

Eden had already been making a name for herself in Hollywood, including leading performances in the sitcom "How to Marry a Millionaire" and the Elvis Presley western "Flaming Star," when she was cast in the NBC series "I Dream of Jeannie." The fantasy comedy, which starred Eden alongside Larry Hagman, followed the whimsical adventures of astronaut Anthony Nelson, who discovers an enchanted lamp with a wish-granting genie.

The show ran for five seasons from 1965 to 1970 and earned Eden a Golden Globe nomination for best comedy TV actress. Although the role would make her famous, Eden said she had her doubts about the show at first.

In a 2020 interview with USA TODAY, Eden recalled that many of the actresses they were testing for Jeannie were her physical opposite.

"They were all brunettes, and they were all beauty contest winners, which meant they were almost six feet tall," Eden said at the time. "I said, 'Are you sure they know what I look like? Because I'm a short blonde and certainly not [the] Middle Eastern type."

Barabra Eden opens up about aging, health

In a September 2024 interview with Fox News Digital, Eden opened up about aging and how she's managed to stay in shape over the years.

"I used to work out all the time," Eden told the outlet. "I used to do spinning classes and then do weights with a trainer. … When COVID hit, that ended my heavy workouts. Now, I have a stationary bicycle, and I lift five pounds. I use very lightweight weights, but they're good for your bones."

In addition to exercise, Eden said, maintaining a balanced diet is another part of her wellness regimen.

"I was lucky to have a mother and father who were conscious of eating well and living," Eden said. "My mother’s mantra was 'moderation of all things.' That's how they lived, and that's how I've lived."

Pippa Middleton, the younger sister of the Princess of Wales, turns 43 years old on September 6.

The mother of three—who has been married to James Matthews since 2017—is “very low-key” and “does her own thing,” but a former royal butler said he “wouldn’t rule out” Pippa taking on this royal role someday.

Like Queen Camilla’s sister, Pippa could one day become one of Kate’s “companions” when she becomes queen.

Pippa Middleton, the younger sister of Kate Middleton, turned 43 years old on September 6. And, while a former royal butler said that Pippa is someone who “does her own thing,” when her sister the Princess of Wales becomes queen someday, could some type of royal role be in the cards for Pippa?

“In the future, I wouldn’t rule out Pippa becoming one of Kate’s companions,” said Grant Harrold, who previously served King Charles as a butler. A “companion” is a more modern term for “ladies-in-waiting” that Queen Elizabeth once had; Queen Camilla has a group of close friends—including her sister, Annabel Elliot—who support her in her royal duties.

Harrold said, per Marie Claire, that if Kate chooses to have companions herself, Pippa would make an ideal choice. Pippa—who served as her older sister’s maid of honor at Kate’s 2011 royal wedding to Prince William—is someone who “keeps herself very low key,” Harrold said, “and I think she does a really good job of it.”

The Middleton family—which also includes Kate and Pippa’s younger brother James Middleton and their parents Michael Middleton and Carole Middleton—typically “manage to stay out of the limelight,” Harrold said. He noted that the Middleton family provides “strong support from the background, but they respect the family and traditions enough to be strictly private.”

“Pippa and the wider Middleton family are really good for William, as they’ve offered this whole other side of family life,” Harrold added. “We know he is the future monarch, but he gets a wonderful, normal lifestyle when he’s with Kate’s family.”

The Daily Mail noted that many “royal insiders also speculate over whether Pippa will receive an honorary title when Prince William succeeds King Charles to the throne and Kate becomes queen.” At present, Pippa, her husband James Matthews, and their three children Arthur, Grace, and Rose live a quiet life at Barton Court, a 32-room Georgian mansion set on a large estate in Berkshire, close to Michael and Carole’s home in Bucklebury. Pippa is set to celebrate her 43rd birthday privately on Sunday, likely with her family.

Though Kate is one of the most famous women in the world, she and Pippa have a “normal sisterly relationship,” Pippa previously shared, adding that she and Kate are “very close.”

“Obviously, she has pressures that she’s taken on and things,” Pippa told NBC in 2014. “But we spend a lot of time together. We still do a lot together as a family, and I think that’s sort of the heart for all of us is having a really close family that we can be normal with each other, treat each other normally—and that kept us all fixed to the ground.”

Looking ahead to the future, royal historian Kate Williams previously said on True Royalty TV’s The Royal Beat: Back in Time, “I think traditionally, we might expect Catherine to appoint her sister Pippa [as a companion] because Catherine is so famously close to her family.” The “job of a monarch and a consort isn’t getting any smaller,” Williams continued. “The letters, the correspondence, the emails are growing every day.”

“When Catherine becomes queen, the levels of tours, the levels of letters, the level of receptions will still require this assistance,” she added. “So I think she will have to appoint some ladies-in-waiting.”

Ailsa Anderson, Queen Elizabeth’s former press secretary, added (per People), “It’s actually quite nice to have somebody who you’ve known and trusted to be by your side in those big events, because when you’ve always got to be on show.”

That said, even if Pippa was offered the role of one of Kate’s companions, it’s unsure if she’d even accept it. “Pippa has her own life—three children and a busy life of her own,” Williams said. “It’s a fascinating question.”

Beautiful women have always appeared older to me. Even popular girls at school had an air of maturity that basically just came from confidence – or the beauty tips imparted by someone’s older sister. As such, the fact that I’m the same age as a model like Kendall Jenner simply does not compute in my brain. No matter your age, it’s easy to look at someone styled and polished and think “I hope I look like that when I grow up” – even if you’re already there.

Most recently, the model daughter of Cindy Crawford, Kaia Gerber, has been met with criticism for presenting far older than her 24 years. After a visit to the US Open in a black midi dress and peep-toe heels last week, the comments came thick and fast: “I have to say she looks a lot older than 24,” one person observed. “She looks like she’s old enough to be on one of those The Real Housewives of____ shows,” added another.

Comparisons to Gerber’s mother have also, inevitably, accumulated. In this case, her sleek look was lined up beside photos of Crawford at the 1991 Oscars in a thigh-slit red Versace gown alongside her 41-year-old then-boyfriend Richard Gere, when she was a starlet of just 25.

While women have long had the pressure to act beyond their years – both in the public eye and privately behind closed doors – any visual hint of this sophistication is fair game for criticism and ridicule; Just because Gerber put on a pencil skirt, the internet acted like she’d had a facelift.

Similarly, Florence Pugh, 30, and Kylie Jenner, 29, are among stars who are often seen as presenting older than they are. Ironic in an industry where women are celebrated for their youthful looks and actually anyone over 30 starts panicking about being too old. Plus, with the popularity of so-called “Instagram face”, all ages are starting to blur into “same face”. So, a Gen Z patient could theoretically walk out of an injector’s office with a similar face to Kris Jenner, 70.

But when it comes to clothes, while one cohort of Gen Z has been owning a youthful chaotic style full of fun and whimsy, another cohort has been pulled towards the neutral colours and clean-lined silhouettes of the Nineties minimalism trend that has had the style set in a long-lasting chokehold. And it’s mostly the young women who’ve adopted this aesthetic who attract the same criticism as Gerber, including Kendall Jenner, who was spotted out in London in a Bottega Veneta midi dress alongside boyfriend Jacob Elordi, and Zendaya, who’s grown synonymous with the Christian Louboutin So Kate stilettos throughout her 20s.

“I think I do have wisdom to offer,” Zendaya, who stepped into the spotlight on the Disney series Shake It Up at age 14, told Elle ahead of her 30th birthday this month. “But I also do still feel like a f****** kid. Like, what the f***, I’m about to be 30? I still feel like a child inside.”

Zendaya, recently said she ‘feels like a child’ but often dresses older than her age (Getty)

The criticism of an adult woman for wearing a pencil skirt and heels is enough to turn your hair (prematurely) grey. Particularly as it was only earlier this summer that there was pearl-clutching over Olivia Rodrigo “infantilising” herself in a babydoll dress. At the risk of sounding like America Ferrera’s call-to-arms monologue in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie: There is, seemingly, no right way for a woman to dress, or exist.

As Anne Helen Petersen wrote in her 2017 book Too Fat, Too Slutty, Too Loud that analysed unruly women in the public eye: “Their bodies, words, and actions have become a locus for the inflammatory rhetoric usually reserved only for political figures. It’s as if each of these women is constantly igniting the line of acceptable behaviour: you don’t know where it is until she steps over it, at which point it bursts into flames.” In 2026, God forbid you wear a bodycon skirt and court shoes, or a summer dress.

(Getty)

If we’re to look at each of these stars counterparts, you rarely – if ever – hear about Tom Holland being too baby-faced to be a super hero, Timothee Chalamet’s old man moustache, or Jacob Elordi’s shapeshifting jaw line, which is largely attributed to aging rather than surgery. Fame, of course, brings some level of scrutiny; but not quite the same lambasting young female stars get.

Ultimately, style swings like a pendulum: It wasn’t uncommon for people in their twenties and thirties to wear three-piece suits a century ago. Twenty-year-old women first started wearing the modern pencil skirt in the Fifties, after Christian Dior introduced the design in 1954. Today, these women, lest we forget, are in full glam. They own jeans and T-shirts, too.

The repeated criticism of sophisticated style feels more like a collective mourning for young people’s loss of innocence, frivolity and freedom. Children who haven't yet learned to read are being fed content and algorithms designed to hook adults online. When it comes to presenting as older, perhaps, look at everyone’s brains, their stress levels, rather than their wardrobe choices. That’s where the real ageing is.

In adulthood, there’s no such thing as not dressing for your age, as style influencers like 61-year-old Grece Ghanem have dedicated their careers to demonstrating. There are only clothes, the people who choose to wear them – and the moral panic we attach to those choices.

A WWE Hall of Famer is taking one of wrestling’s most recognizable characters from the squared circle to the big screen. Robert Remus, better known as Sgt. Slaughter, has announced that a live-action movie based on his fictional military persona is in development, along with an early teaser.

Remus revealed the project on X, telling his wrestling and G.I. Joe fan base that the movie is something he has “visualized and worked tirelessly” to bring to the silver screen. He also shared a teaser scene and asked fans to watch, share, and comment on it.

The project is titled Slaughter: The Origin Story, with Remus serving as executive producer. The film will focus on a younger version of Sgt. Slaughter and explore an early chapter in the character’s story.

Sgt. Slaughter’s live-action movie explores his origin story

The movie’s logline places the story in 1983. It follows a dangerous drill instructor who has been haunted by battles in Cambodia and removed from his combat role before a hostage crisis on Diablo Island forces the government to turn to him.

Remus has not announced a release date or cast details, and he said more information will follow. It also remains unclear whether the story will explore how Sgt. Slaughter eventually enters professional wrestling.

The character has deep roots in both wrestling and G.I. Joe. Remus introduced Sgt. Slaughter in 1980, and the persona became one of the most recognizable figures of the 1980s. He eventually won the WWF World Heavyweight Championship from The Ultimate Warrior at the 1991 Royal Rumble and later faced Hulk Hogan for the title at WrestleMania VII.

In 1985, Hasbro brought Sgt. Slaughter into the G.I. Joe franchise, making him the first real-life personality turned into a G.I. Joe action figure. Remus also voiced the character in the animated series and G.I. Joe: The Movie.

Now, Sgt. Slaughter is preparing for another crossover — this time with a live-action origin story. For fans who have followed the character from wrestling rings to toy shelves and television screens, the first teaser marks the opening bell for another chapter.

Who wants to be an Emmy winner? Jimmy Kimmel!

The comedian, 58, won Outstanding Host for a Game Show for ABC’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire at the 2026 Creative Arts Emmys ceremony held on Saturday, Sept. 5, in Los Angeles. Jeopardy!, meanwhile, won Outstanding Game Show the same night.

Kimmel became the host of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire in 2020. Last year, Kimmel also took home the award in the same category.

During his acceptance speech last year, Kimmel paid tribute to the late Regis Philbin, who served as the original host of the U.S. version of the series. “Regis was the best at this,” he later told Gold Derby in the press room. “I don’t think this show would still be on the air if Regis hadn’t hosted it to start with.”

The comedian’s late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live! is nominated for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series and Outstanding Variety Series.

Other nominees in the Outstanding Host for a Game Show category included Steve Harvey for Celebrity Family Feud, Ken Jennings for Jeopardy!, Colin Jost for Pop Culture Jeopardy!and Martin Short for Match Game.

Harvey, 69, has hosted Celebrity Family Feud for 11 years. The game show put a spin on Harvey’s other hit, Family Feud, where stars compete alongside their relatives and cast members for a chance to win money for charity. Since its 2015 debut, the TV personality has been nominated for four Emmys for hosting Celebrity Family Feud.

Speaking to Varietyin 2024, Harvey revealed his secret to hosting a game show. “I think the key to being a great host is you’ve got to be gracious; you’ve got to be willing to laugh at yourself,” he said. “But then you’ve got to know the line of how far you can push the joke with a contestant. You can’t make the audience think you’re being harsh with them. But at the same time, you’ve got to have fun with them.”

Jennings, 52, took over Jeopardy! after longtime host Alex Trebek died in November 2020. He became host of its celebrity spinoff during its second season in 2023.

His time on the hit trivia game show started long before that, as he first appeared as a contestant in 2004. Jennings went on to win 74 consecutive games that year, which is the longest regular-season winning streak in Jeopardy! history.

This year marks the game show host’s fifth Emmy nomination. In his first season as host, Jeopardy! won Outstanding Game Show at the 2021 Daytime Emmys.

In an August interview with PEOPLE, Jennings shared why he thinks the game show, which has been on the air for over 40 years, has stayed successful. “For young audiences, old audiences, red states, blue states, it doesn’t matter. This is a place where America comes together,” he said. “And facts actually matter, you know?” Jennings added. “There’s expertise and scholarship on Jeopardy!, and that’s how it should be.”

Jost, 44, who is known for hosting “Weekend Update” alongside Michael Che on Saturday Night Live, entered the world of game shows when he became the host of the Jeopardy! spinoff when it debuted in 2024. As host of Pop Culture Jeopardy!, Jost has been nominated twice.

During a December 2024 appearance on the Today show, the comedian shared what it was like to step onto theset to host Pop Culture Jeopardy! “It’s kind of intimidating being on that set; he [Trebek] did it so well; Ken does such a great job. You don’t wanna mess it up. You don’t want to disgrace this hallowed ground,” he said.

Throughout his career, Jost has been nominated for 20 Emmys, winning two: Outstanding Writing for a Variety Specialand Outstanding Variety Special (Live) for SNL in 2025.

Martin Short on ‘Match Game’Credit: ABC/Youtube

When ABC revived the hit game show Match Game in 2025, Short, 76, signed on as host. The show follows four contestants competing for $250,000 by matching fill-in-the-blank answers with a panel of celebrities. Match Game first premiered in 1962 and was hosted by Gene Rayburn. Alec Baldwin hosted the first revival from 2016 to 2022.

“I used to love Match Game in the ‘60s when I was a kid,” Short said in an ABC promo video. “I seemed hip and ruckus, and, again, you felt like you were at a party with these celebrities.”

Throughout his storied career, Short has been nominated for 23 Emmys, winning two: Outstanding Variety Special for AFI Life Achievement Award: A Tribute to Mel Brooks in 2014 and Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program for his work on SCTV Network in 1983.

The 78th Emmy Awards (Creative Arts) are being held on Sept. 5 and Sept. 6 at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles and will be edited into a single broadcast that airs Saturday, Sept. 12, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on FXX and streams on Hulu the next day. The Primetime Emmy Awards will air live on NBC and Peacock Monday, Sept. 14, with host Mariska Hargitay.

The war of words between Alex Van Halen and Sammy Hagar has sparked up again.

In a recent interview with the Brazilian magazine Roadie Crew, Alex was asked about the autobiographies written by each of Van Halen’s classic frontmen – David Lee Roth and Hagar.

Alex described Roth’s book Crazy From the Heart as “quite entertaining,” noting that it “faithfully reflects [Roth’s] sense of humor.” “While the text is somewhat abstract and occasionally loses the thread, it remains a very interesting perspective on that era,” he added.

Alex’s thoughts on Hagar, and his 2011 book Red: My Uncensored Life In Rock, were far less civil.

“I don’t know what he wrote, and I don’t want to know,” the Van Halen drummer remarked. “In my opinion, Sammy Hagar is a complete idiot.”

Alex Van Halen’s Feud With Sammy Hagar

Alex and Hagar have been embroiled in discourse for several years. When the Van Halen drummer released his own autobiography, Brothers, in 2024, the Red Rocker declared it was “blasphemy” that his years in Van Halen were ignored. Around the same time, Alex said Hagar wasn’t “doing the band justice” with his Van Halen-focused Best of All World tour.

Hagar reportedly invited Alex to join in that trek in an effort to heal old wounds. However, when he didn’t get a response, the Red Rocker again expressed his displeasure. “Al, you’re fine. Just leave me alone. I’ll leave you alone. Everything’s good,” Hagar told Rolling Stone in 2025. “I’m making you money, by the way, Al. I’m out there selling Van Halen records and keeping the name alive, keeping the music alive.” In the same interview, Hagar suggested Alex was “angry” because “he seems like he doesn’t want to play drums or can’t play drums anymore.”

The origins of the feud between Hagar and Alex reportedly go back to Hagar’s book, in which he detailed some of Eddie Van Halen’s darker side, including the guitarist’s erratic behavior and battles with alcoholism. Hagar has since expressed regret for what he divulged in Red, but Alex has reportedly not forgiven him.

“Hi folks, these days, when someone is having a health issue, it’s referred to as an ‘opportunity,’ so let’s go with that — I’m having one of those,” he wrote via X at the time. “It’s also called a type of cancer that is ‘treatable’ not ‘curable.’”

The Army of Darkness star admitted that his diagnosis was a “shock” before adding that he only decided to share his prognosis publicly due to his various upcoming public appearances.

“I’m posting this, because professionally, a few things will have to change — appearances and cons and work in general need to take a back seat to treatment,” he continued at the time. “My plan is to get as well as I possibly can over the summer so that I can tour with my new movie Ernie & Emma this fall.”

He added, “Regrets on my part. Treatment needs and professional obligations don’t always go hand-in-hand.”

Campbell is the star and director of Ernie & Emma, while his wife, Ida Gearon, serves as a producer. The road-trip comedy follows a widowed pear salesman who goes on an adventure to scatter his wife’s ashes. Ernie & Emma premiered last month in Medford, Oregon, where the project was filmed, with a wider release scheduled for the fall.

“Fear not, I am a tough old son-of-a-bitch and I have great support, so I expect to be around a while,” the actor concluded back in March. “As always, you’re the greatest fans in the world and I hope to see you soon!”

During his Wednesday podcast appearance, Campbell reiterated that when it comes to his cancer diagnosis, he has decided “pretty specifically” to “live with it, not die from it.”

“Cancer is all the rage, but I’ve said plenty and I need to get back to the business of living,” he wrote via X on Saturday, September 5.
