The Formula 1 title race is turning into the ultimate battle of youth against experience.

On one side, Lewis Hamilton, who at 41 just became F1's oldest race winner since 1970. An eighth world title would make him the oldest champion since 1957.

On the other, Kimi Antonelli, the 19-year-old Italian who leads the standings, on course to be the youngest-ever to take the title.

"I've been here before. I know what I have to do, and there's a long way to go," Hamilton said Thursday ahead of this weekend's Austrian Grand Prix, set to take place as a "heat hazard" race as hot weather bakes Europe.

"We have a real battle on our hands, and it's going to take everyone for the rest of the year to even come close to competing with (Mercedes), but I don't think it's impossible."

Hamilton's win at Barcelona two weeks ago, his first with Ferrari after a year and a half of frustration, brought together smart strategy, Mercedes' reliability issues and innovation at Ferrari with key car parts that rivals have rushed to copy. Ferrari's bringing an upgraded engine to Austria, too.

Antonelli's teammate George Russell said he was surprised how fast Ferrari is developing its car under F1's strict spending rules, but "at the end of the day, we're still the team to beat. So this will be another good weekend to see if Ferrari are still on that good form or if that was a one-off."

Hamilton's win just showed that anyone "writing him off" was wrong, said Russell, his teammate at Mercedes in 2024.

"For sure, he is a big threat. Ferrari are a huge threat. Kimi is still very much the driver out front and is performing really incredibly and consistently," Russell said. "Ferrari feel like they're coming and Lewis is at forefront of that."

How Austria shows Antonelli's growth

What a difference a year makes.

Three corners into last year's Austrian Grand Prix, Antonelli smashed into Max Verstappen, ending the race for both. Verstappen accepted Antonelli's apology, saying "every driver has made a mistake like that" — though the points he lost that day arguably ended up costing him the title.

It was part of a disastrous run of summer results at European tracks for Antonelli, who admitted he felt overwhelmed by frustration. After Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff repeatedly called Antonelli's performance "underwhelming" at his home Italian Grand Prix, it prompted speculation about his future. Then came the turnaround.

Antonelli used Wolff's criticism as "fuel to do even better" and he did, scoring more points in the final eight rounds of the season than he had in the previous 16. That laid the foundations for his championship-leading breakout season in 2026.

Verstappen's future

For the third year running, Verstappen arrives at Red Bull's home race with his future unclear.

The four-time champion's Red Bull deal runs through 2028 but could allow an earlier exit under certain conditions. The speculation's fueled by long-running interest from Mercedes and Verstappen's remarks about quitting F1 out of frustration with the 2026 cars.

In 2024 and 2025, Verstappen eventually committed to staying with the team which has overseen his entire F1 career.

Monaco dispute rumbles on

It's three weeks since the Monaco Grand Prix and the results still aren't final. McLaren and Red Bull are protesting the ruling which handed Pierre Gasly back third place after canceling a time penalty.

Multiple drivers were penalized under a wrongly set-up timing system, but only Gasly's was overturned. If the decision's reversed, Red Bull's Isack Hadjar would be third and McLaren's Oscar Piastri fourth.

We've already reached the midway point of the season, and the Yankees – currently minus stars Aaron Judge, Max Fried and Giancarlo Stanton – are leading the AL East.

In a lackluster American League, the 2026 Yanks have positioned themselves as favorites to win the pennant, and they've shown their overall depth to maintain that status.

Friday's game at Boston marks the official halfway mark of the Yankees' season, and our midterm grades are in.

For this exercise, we used eight pitching starts, 15 relief appearances and 25 position player games played as our minimum to post a grade.

*An exception was made for utility player Max Schuemann, on the active roster since April 28.

Cam Schlittler: A+

Starting pitcher

The AL's first half Cy Young, leading the league in ERA, hits per nine innings and strikeout-walk ratio.

Ben Rice: A

First baseman/DH

The team's first-half MVP, leading the club in homers and OPS.

Paul Goldschmidt: A

First baseman/DH

Saw increased playing time due to Giancarlo Stanton's injury and responded with fountain-of-youth first half, mashing lefties with a 1.304 OPS.

Cody Bellinger: A

Outfielder

Consistently performs well in all facets and his left field defense is Gold Glove Award worthy.

Fernando Cruz: B+

Reliever

Aaron Boone's most valuable setup man, with a lethal swing-and-miss splitter that has been more reliable in 2026.

Max Fried: B+

Starting pitcher

Lefty posted a 2.09 ERA in the first seven of his 10 starts before landing on the IL with a bone bruise to his pitching elbow.

Brent Headrick: B+

Reliever

Converted lefty starter has become an important setup piece, trusted against both right and left-handed hitters.

Aaron Judge B+

Right fielder

Credit for playing through an injury, diagnosed as rib stress fracture that placed him on IL (retro to June 2). Still posted 150 OPS-plus.

Will Warren: B

Starting pitcher

Steady.

Jose Caballero: B

Infielder/Outfielder

Important for his defensive versatility, speed and offensive ability. There's daring to his game, but sometimes to a fault.

Trent Grisham: B

Center fielder

Was enjoying one of his best offensive stretches as a Yankee when he hit the injured list, June 13, with a strained hamstring.

David Bednar: B

Bounced back after a rough mid-May stretch, with a zero ERA in 11 appearances since.

Paul Blackburn: B

Reliever

Has done a solid job in a thankless hybrid long-relief role. Mostly effective in varied use.

Carlos Rodon: B-

Starting pitcher

Yanks have won the last five of the lefty's eight starts. Season was delayed by rehab from October elbow procedure.

Max Schuemann: B-

Infielder/Outfielder

Has started at five different positions, showing good defense and posting a .395 on-base percentage in a limited role.

Amed Rosario: C+

Infielder

Defense can be rough, and he's been better vs. righty pitching than lefties, but a valuable presence in an inconsistent role.

Anthony Volpe: C+

Shortstop

Generally better since his May call-up, a year after suffering a torn left labrum.

Ryan Weathers: C+

Starting pitcher

Fun to watch when he's rolling, with strikeout stuff, but susceptible to the long ball.

Jazz Chisholm Jr.: C

Second base

Got off to a rough start in his free agent walk year, remains prone to lapses. Expects more from his performance, with talent galore.

Ryan Yarbrough: C

Reliever

Preserves other arms in a sporadic, long relief role.

Tim Hill: C-

Reliever

Not as effective as last season, but still capable and unflappable in any spot.

Ryan McMahon: D+

Third base

Recovered from a brutal start, reliable defender in a strict platoon, now on IL with a throat infection.

Camilo Doval: D

Reliever

New York Yankees pitcher Camilo Doval (75) looks on while a bug flies by his head during a game against the Minnesota Twins at Yankee Stadium, Aug 13, 2025, Bronx, New York, USA. Yannick Peterhans/NorthJersey.com

Has struggled to find consistency in a pinstriped setup role, despite high-octane sinking fastball and good stuff overall.

Jake Bird: D

Reliever

Sinker-sweeper combo is real but still plagued by inconsistency.

Austin Wells/J.C. Escarra: F

Catchers

Wells' framing and handling of a staff, and Escarra's pitch-blocking aside, team is getting zero production out of their catching tandem.

Aaron Boone: B+

Manager

Guides a clubhouse with stars and personalities well, getting the best lately from a bullpen that hasn't been a signature strength.

Brian Cashman: B+

General manager

Run-it-back critics have largely been silent. As the MLB trade deadline nears, upgrades at catcher and bullpen – or possibly something bolder - will hold Yankees Universe's attention.

Incomplete grades

Outfielders Jasson Dominguez, Giancarlo Stanton, Spencer Jones; starting pitchers Gerrit Cole, Luis Gil, Elmer Rodriguez; relievers Yerry de los Santos, Kervin Castro, Angel Chivilli, Yovanny Cruz; catcher Ali Sanchez; infielder Oswaldo Cabrera.

Pope Leo XIV has received a special gift from former Chicago White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski.

The pontiff has been given the baseball from the final out of Game 1 of the 2005 World Series. It was unclear when exactly the exchange occurred, but Pierzynski posted pictures on social media on Thursday showing the moment at the Vatican.

“7 year old me, at my First Communion, would have never thought that I would get to meet The Holy Father, Pope Leo XIV,” Pierzynski wrote on Instagram. “I was honored to give him the last out ball from Game 1 of the 2005 World Series, the game he attended.”

Leo is a White Sox fan dating to his days growing up in Chicago. He was known as Robert Prevost or Father Bob when he went to the World Series opener 21 years ago, a 5-3 White Sox victory that ended when Bobby Jenks struck out Houston's Adam Everett with Pierzynski behind the plate.

There is a graphic installation at Rate Field that marks the section where the pope sat for Game 1. The White Sox went on to a four-game sweep for the championship.

The first pope from the U.S. in the history of the Catholic Church has received several sports-related gifts since he was elected last May.

He was given a pinstriped No. 14 White Sox jersey with “Konerko” and “Pope Leo” written on the back and signed by former White Sox first baseman Paul Konerko, who wore No. 14 during his playing career. He also has a bat that once belonged to Hall of Famer Nellie Fox, who spent most of his career with the White Sox.

Shortly after he became the pope, Leo was given a custom Chicago Bears jersey from Vice President JD Vance. He was presented with a Chicago Bulls jersey with No. 14 and “Pope Leo” on the back from Bulls radio broadcaster Chuck Swirsky in November.

The White Sox plan to pay tribute to Leo at their Aug. 11 game against Cincinnati, handing out pope-themed hats to fans. The hats are shaped like the pope’s miter, with the team’s sock logo in the middle.

- Madonna has spoken out about an alleged "falling out" with Universal over her delayed biopic movie.

- The icon was initially meant to direct a script she co-wrote with Diablo Cody and Erin Cressida Wilson.

- "I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget."

She might've hit big with her 1990 single "Justify My Love," but Madonna isn't interested in having to justify a big budget for a biopic about her larger-than-life legacy as one of the most iconic performers in pop culture history.

Years after Madonna first revealed she would direct a biographical drama about her life (with screenwriting help from Oscar-winning *Juno* screenwriter Diablo Cody and, later, Erin Cressida Wilson) alongside distributor Universal, the singer-songwriter revealed what she claims happened behind the scenes that ultimately led to the project's significant delay.

"I was supposed to make a movie about my life. I worked on my script for two years and spent two years at Universal Studios with the line producers doing budgeting and casting," Madonna said in a new *Interview* story. "We had a falling out, me and Universal, regarding budget because I needed — I’ve had an extraordinary life. I’ve had a huge life, so I needed a big budget. You know what I mean?"

Madonna alleged that the studio "couldn’t get their heads around it," so she attempted to find "a way to make it for less money in Serbia," but that, in her estimation, the studio wasn't "into the idea" of making the movie there.

"Maybe they just didn’t believe in me. One of their first reactions was, 'We don’t believe you’d stay in Serbia more than four days.' And I said, 'Did you read the script?' My whole life has been survival. I’m not going there for a holiday," Madonna replied, before alleging, "But anyway, I was in limbo when that fell apart, and then Netflix reached out to make a series. That was a whole other long process, because I couldn’t use the script I had with Universal unless I bought it from them for an extortionist’s price, even though I wrote it. Don’t ask."

** previously reported that the biopic would star Emmy winner Julia Garner in the lead role, with Julia Fox previously holding meetings to discuss potentially playing Madonna's longtime friend, actress Debi Mazar. After a press release announced that the film would enter production with Universal, Madonna confirmed the delay of the project as she set out on her Celebration world tour in 2023, which also rolled out amid Madonna's hospitalization with a serious bacterial infection.

"That’s just the way it goes. I started trying to understand how making a series would work. It’s a very, very different process," Madonna said of the potential move of the story from a big-screen movie to a streaming series at Netflix. "You have to meet a lot of writers and find the right showrunner, and I couldn’t find one. This went on for another eight or nine months. I was like, 'Good thing I have another job because I need to work, I need to create. I need to do what I was put on this earth to do.'"

EW has reached out to a Universal representative for comment.

Though Madonna's biopic was delayed at Universal, she teased its revival in a series of social media posts in 2024, wherein a photo of the script teased that the title would be *Who's That Girl* — a reference to Madonna's 1987 comedy film and its accompanying No. 1-charting soundtrack single of the same name.

Before a September 2020 press release confirmed that Universal would make the film alongside Oscar nominee Amy Pascal, Madonna initially revealed that she and Cody were working on an early draft of the script, which, at the time, had a working title of *Little Sparrow*. EW confirmed that, in 2021, Cody eventually finished her work on the script and left the project to pursue other work, with Wilson stepping in to help Madonna hone the story.

Milestones Madonna said she wanted to cover in the movie's story included her meteoric rise through the entertainment industry in New York City, penning "Like a Prayer," making the movie *Evita*, and chronicling her connection with Jose Gutierez Xtravaganza and Luis Xtravaganza, staples of the Harlem ballroom scene who played a huge role in the success of her 1990 smash song "Vogue."

Since the delay of the film, Madonna has worked with Garner on a number of things, including bringing her on stage during the Celebration Tour, casting her in her* Confessions II *short film, and joining her on the set of *The Studio*'s second season, where the Apple TV series filmed with the pair in Venice, Italy — the same location where Madonna shot her "Like a Virgin" music video in 1984.

The process of switching the film over to a series format, Madonna said, led to her interest in making her forthcoming album, *Confessions II*, her first full-length LP since 2019's *Madame X *and a highly anticipated sequel to her 2005 pop hit *Confessions on a Dance Floor.*

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our ******EW Dispatch newsletter*****.**

"I reached out to [*Confessions* producer] Stuart [Price] because I thought the world is in a very dark place and people need to dance. I hadn’t worked with Stuart for a long time. We’d just done the Celebration Tour together, but besides that, I didn’t really see or speak to him for probably 15 years," Madonna said, adding that their sessions together were inspired by dark personal times. "I was living in New York and I reached out to him, thinking, 'What if we tried to make *Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II*, and reenter the world of inspirational dance music?' So I came to London and went to his studio, and we were just playing around to see if there was magic between us. I had a lot of stuff going on in my life personally. My brother was very, very, very ill, and my stepmother, with whom I’d had a very traumatic relationship throughout my entire childhood, had just died."

Leading up to the release of *Confessions II* (out July 3), Madonna has released three songs from the album so far, including buzz track "I Feel So Free" and singles "Love Sensation" and "Bring Your Love," featuring Sabrina Carpenter.

British rider Oscar Onley has been ruled out of this summer's Tour de France with a shoulder injury, in another blow after a difficult season thus far.

The Scot crashed out of the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes - the prestigious one-week stage race formerly known as the Criterium du Dauphine - two weeks ago.

He plunged over a roadside barrier and narrowly missed falling into a steep ravine, crashing into tree cover above the drop on stage six of the race. The 23-year-old finished the stage but opted not to start the following day, with his team Netcompany-Ineos announcing he had dislocated his shoulder and suffered a knee injury.

His chances of riding this summer's Tour de France, which begins on 4 July, initially appeared high nonetheless. But a team statement released on Thursday announced that medical investigations after his crash confirmed "a significant shoulder injury".

It continued: "Unfortunately, this means Oscar will be unable to compete in this year's Tour de France.

"He has already begun rehabilitation and is making encouraging progress. We wish Oscar a full and speedy recovery."

Onley's withdrawal from the Tour is a further blow to Ineos' planned squad for the race, which was already weakened by the likely loss of time-triallist Josh Tarling, who also crashed on stage six of the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and fractured his collarbone.

Onley said: "I'm gutted not to be able to line up for the Tour de France this year. My focus is now on recovering and getting my shoulder in a good place, but I'm really motivated to try and make something out of this season.

"I am looking forward to watching the boys racing in France in the coming weeks, especially knowing how hard everyone has worked."

Kelso-born Onley moved to British squad Netcompany-Ineos - who rebranded from Ineos Grenadiers on the eve of the Giro d'Italia - over the winter after a breakout season with Picnic PostNL.

An Ineos squad including Oscar Onley and Kevin Vauquelin won the team time trial at Paris-Nice (AFP/Getty)

Last year he finished fourth at the Tour de France and second in the young riders' classification, going toe-to-toe with champion Tadej Pogacar and runner-up and two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard on some of the race's most difficult mountain stages.

He finished a minute and 12 seconds off the podium, with Florian Lipowitz - winner of the young riders' standings - edging him out of third place.

Onley also finished third overall at the Tour de Suisse, a key warm-up race for the Tour de France, last year, and was signed by Netcompany-Ineos as a home-grown Grand Tour contender.

But he has been unable to replicate those results in his first year with the squad, with illness disrupting the first half to his season. He finished fourth overall at the Volta ao Algarve, his season opener, but abandoned Paris-Nice with illness and then withdrew from the Tour de Romandie on stage one after suffering from a stomach bug.

He said after withdrawing from Romandie: "Been a tough start to the season to be honest and hard not to feel like I've let a lot of people down after all the time and investment from everyone at Ineos Grenadiers."

"When all else fails, you hit 'em with the truth," the elderly billionaire says to himself — showing off some of Cruise's accent work — as he paces back and forth in what looks like an office with a sole security guard as his company. "Hit 'em with the hard truth. Just bang, bang, bang! Whoo! Whoo!"

Other clips show Digger entering a stark white room filled with people shouting at him, the same people who are later shown in an all-out brawl; several fighter jets flying through the sky; Digger jumping into a split while three others look on; and Digger holding out his arms in a room as a fire builds up behind a curtain.

Per a synopsis, the film will follow Digger, "the most powerful man in the world," as he attempts to prove he is "humanity's savior" before the disaster he unleashed "destroys everything."

*Digger* also stars John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, Sophie Wilde, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

D'Arcy recently shared their experience working alongside Cruise with ** for a *House of the Dragon* digital cover story.

"It's sort of unparalleled, and Tom Cruise is phenomenal," D'Arcy said. "I'm very excited. I haven't seen it, but I knew while I was in the room that something incredibly special was happening. I would've gone there and shot nothing. I would've been happy just to stand at the door and ogle at that process."

The *House of the Dragon* star described the experience of working with Cruise as "one of those career moments where the whole time it's happening, you can't believe it."

They added, "I had my notebook with me, and anytime that I wasn't shooting, I was just trying to make notes about how Alejandro [and] Tom were working, about that process, about the extraordinary rigor that Alejandro brings to every element of his work."

*Digger* marks Cruise's first film outside the *Mission: Impossible* or *Top Gun* franchises since 2017, when he starred in *American Made* and *The Mummy*. It's also his first collaboration with four-time Oscar winner Iñárritu.

The film is Iñárritu's first since directing 2022's *Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths* for Netflix, and his first English-language film since 2015's *The Revenant*.

"All I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It's insane. It's scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me," Iñárritu told Deadline Hollywood at the Cannes Film Festival in May. "But I don't like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little. I felt *Birdman* was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that."

He added, "Tom makes me laugh every single day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f‑‑‑ing impressed and happy."
