It's a drizzly afternoon in New York City on-set with People StyleWatch, and Harlow Jane is wondering what she should do with her face.

"I don't know how to do that," she laughs when the photographer suggests a specific pose. The coastal-inspired set sees her in a variety of seaside scenarios: swinging her legs off of a wooden dock, steering a rowboat and even pushing a wheelbarrow full of faux hydrangeas.

The 23-year-old is gearing up for her first major role in the upcoming Peacock series The Five Star Weekend (based on the 2023 Elin Hilderbrand novel of the same name). She plays Caroline Shaw, a film student and the daughter of famous food blogger Hollis Shaw (played by Jennifer Garner). In the aftermath of her husband's death, Hollis decides to host a weekend on Nantucket with girlfriends from different eras of her life (played by stars Regina Hall, Chloë Sevigny, D'Arcy Carden and Gemma Chan).

Harlow may be a newcomer onscreen, but she's no stranger to being surrounded by great actors. Her mother is Oscar-winning actress Patricia Arquette, whose father, Lewis, was best known for his role on the 1970s television show The Waltons and mother, Brenda, worked as an actress and teacher.

Patricia's paternal grandfather, Cliff Arquette, was a famous radio host and comedian throughout the 1950s and '60s. All four of Patricia's siblings (Rosanna, Richmond, David and Alexis, who died in 2016) are also actors.

Harlow's father, Thomas Jane, is an actor known for his roles in films like The Punisher (2004), The Sweetest Thing (2002) and Deep Blue Sea (1999).

Despite her family's legacy, Harlow initially had no interest in Hollywood.

"I didn't really understand what [the industry] was," she says when she sits down for her PEOPLE interview. "I just knew my parents did it. So I didn't want to do it. I was like, 'Lame.' "

Joining the Family Business

For years Harlow didn't even realize her parents were famous, which she says is "probably a blessing." During an elementary-school career day, students were asked to do a drawing of what they wanted to be when they grew up.

"I was looking at other people's drawings," she says. "Everyone wanted to be a star. I was like, 'I'm not going to be like you people.' So, I drew this woman sitting at a desk, and I was like, 'I'm going to be a lawyer. I'm going to work a desk job.' So I went with that for years."

Later, visiting her mom on-set sparked an interest in acting, and the passion was solidified in a high school theater class. "I really liked it, much to my chagrin," says Harlow. "It feels pretty meditative when I'm getting to do it. It feels almost spiritual. That sounds so corny. But it does feel almost spiritual, and I wonder if maybe it's because my family's been doing it since the 1910s."

Harlow maintains her choice to enter the industry was hers entirely, and her family remained supportive but hands-off. "My mom was like, 'If you want to do it, you do it, but it's not my job to teach you how to do it or help you out in any way. You're going to figure this out on your own. It's going to be hard; you're going to cry. It's going to suck, and you're going to deal with it, if you really want that to work for you.' I was like, 'Okay.' "

The Breakout Role

Harlow says her early days of auditioning "sucked so bad," estimating that she went to five auditions a week for three years. While there have been small successes along the way (she starred as a younger version of her mom's character in an episode of AppleTV+'s High Desert and appeared in the 2023 film She Came to Me with Anne Hathaway), Harlow struck gold when she got the script for The Five Star Weekend.

"I don't think I've ever done a better audition," she says. After three months of radio silence, Harlow got word that she booked the part while driving back from Coachella with her two best friends.

"We pull over to this gas station . . .  and I get a phone call, and [my team] told me that I got it," she says. "Me and my friends, we were all holding hands. . . .  It was the most beautiful drive home, because we all immediately started reading the book in the car, crying nonstop. We called everyone we knew."

"It was so nice that I got to experience that with my girls," she adds. "This show is so much about your female friendships. So it felt very kismet."

Her mom, it turned out, had been keeping her daughter's big news a secret. "I called my mom immediately, and she said, 'I already know.' They told her first. She was like, 'Thank God, I don't have to hide this from you. I knew a week ago, and I couldn't tell you.' And I was like, 'Girl. That's so mean.' "

Harlow recalls being "genuinely so terrified" of joining Garner and the rest of the superstar cast — but her fear dissipated after having lunch with Garner. "She has the most inviting, kind energy," Harlow says. "She's so calm. You know you're going to be okay if you make a mistake or whatever. So I, honestly, just felt like, 'Oh, you're my mom now.' . . . I just felt very safe with her, which was perfect and great, and that's what you would ask for out of any mom or scene partner. She was so kind to me."

The star adds that she learned so much simply from observing the way Garner works.

"The real wisdom was in her actions, the way that she treats her crew, her cast, everyone," she says. "The way that her kindness radiated toward everyone on that project, that's the biggest lesson for sure. It was really, really incredible to see. It's hard for a woman to be powerful and have a say in things, but also maintain a lot of your kindness and grace, and that was really important for me to watch."

There was also plenty of bonding on the set of The Five Star Weekend. Harlow says she "had a blast" exploring all that Nantucket has to offer, from local food haunts (she gives a special shoutout to the chicken salad from Stubbys) to having a karaoke night with the cast.

"Everybody got up onstage. It was so fun," she says, before admitting, "But such a culture shock. I was so homesick that whole month. I had never really been away from home on a job that long. I was really homesick, but I had so much fun."

Harlow immersed herself in the coastal lifestyle on-set and off but now she's ready to get back to her own personal style.

"I'm very alternative, I guess," she says. "My style this summer is going to be Marie Antoinette, religious exile, Salome, Dance of the Seven Veils, but then also maybe some Deadhead in there, a little Stevie Nicks, that kind of a weird amalgamation of things. That's my plan for the summer."

She laughs and then adds, with all the casual wisdom of a cool older sister, that her summer plan also includes "being naked and gaining 10 lbs. and wearing sunscreen."

Perhaps her self-assuredness comes from her powerhouse star of a mom, whom Harlow clearly admires in more ways than one. "Her personal style is incredible," she gushes. "My mother has the best taste in the world with architecture, with clothing, with everything. She has taste on a different level, in my opinion."

Luckily, Patricia has allowed her daughter to borrow from her closet. "I've never loved my mother so much as when she said to me, 'You have no idea how many shoes I have for you,' " she says. "The shoes I've inherited, you don't even know. Vogue could run a special on these shoes that I have alone."

When it comes to the red carpet, Harlow says it's been "hard" to find her signature style. "When you're young and you're starting out, you really do not have a lot of control over your image or what you're wearing or anything like that," she explains. "I feel like that aspect of myself, I have not really had the opportunity to delve into, but I would wear anything as long as I like it. It could be a T-shirt dress. Whatever. As long as I like it."

Just the Beginning

With the premiere of The Five Star Weekend on July 6, Harlow's career is taking off. Her next project is something of a family affair: She's also set to appear in the upcoming movie Evil Genius, based on Netflix's 2018 documentary called Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist.

The new narrative film is directed and produced by Harlow's aunt Courteney Cox and costars her mom, along with David Harbour, Michael Chernus, Garret Dillahunt, Danielle Macdonald, Tom McCarthy, Gregory Alan Williams, Ryan Eggold and Owen Teague. It follows Brian Wells's infamous "pizza bomber" case, which involved an FBI investigation that uncovered a complex robbery and murder scheme.

Despite her family connection, Harlow asked if she could audition and earn the role. "I don't want it if it's not right," she says. Her part involves a small scene in a flashback but required her to learn how to roller-skate.

"I was like, 'Why didn't you tell me that when I agreed to this that I had to roller-skate for 12 hours a day?' " the actress jokes. "It was a lot of fun, and I love the relationship that I have with Courteney. She's still my aunt." (Harlow's uncle David Arquette was married to Cox from 1999 to 2013, and the two share a daughter, Coco, 22.) "The relationship that me, Coco, Courteney and my mom have, we all have these nice girl dates together, and it's really sweet."

Harlow maintains that this season of her life is busy. After filming The Five Star Weekend, she had a brief break before diving into a short film and then Evil Genius. She's currently filming an upcoming AppleTV+ series, The Off Weeks, which costars Ben Stiller and Jessica Chastain.

"I've been happily working. Thank God. Amen," she says, before admitting: "It's a very short turnaround, and I think I burnt myself out a little bit."

"But I want to go again now," she continues. "I'm still ready to work. It's been a lot of traveling, a lot of learning and lots of mistakes and lots of falling on my face, but it's good. It's great."

As she embarks on her career, Harlow will inevitably face critics who brand her as a nepo baby and nothing more. She says she's "indifferent" about the title but acknowledges the realities of the industry. "There are a lot of people that get opportunities because of who they were raised around," she muses. "It's also true for every career on earth, unfortunately."

Her mom, however, was "really worried" about her daughter being perceived in a certain way, but much like learning to roller-skate or standing on her own among an all-star cast, Harlow is choosing to focus her energy on the work.

"I'm like, 'I had no choice over what vagina I came out of. Seriously, I have no choice. I didn't choose to be born to you. I just am, and this is my life.' "

While she's had roles offered to her from family friends, she says it "doesn't feel good" to accept them without earning it. "I got to a point when I was 18 or 19 where I was like, 'I don't ever want to be somewhere where I don't truly feel like I deserve it,' " she recalls, becoming emotional. "Like, I worked for it, I got it for myself. And so that's where I'm at. And I feel very proud of that, honestly."

"I don't know. Whatever," she adds, doubting herself for only the slightest of seconds before concluding, "I'm proud of it."

- The cast of *Will & Grace* is honoring James Burrows, who directed every episode of the hit sitcom.

- Eric McCormack was the first to speak out, remembering Burrows as "a mentor to me and a dear friend."

- Burrows called *Will & Grace* "probably the funniest show I ever did" in 2023.

The cast of *Will & Grace* is honoring James Burrows' legacy.

Burrows, who died on Friday at 85, directed all 246 episodes of *Will & Grace* during its two runs. (The '90s show was revived for three seasons from 2017 to 2020.) The NBC sitcom followed the friendship of best friends Will Truman (played by Eric McCormack), a gay lawyer, and Grace Adler (Debra Messing), a straight interior designer.

McCormack was the first to break his silence on Burrow's passing, which came 28 years after *Will & Grace *premiered in 1998.

"We lost a giant today, a mentor to me and a dear friend," the actor wrote on Instagram. "The 800 lb gorilla of television comedy for fifty years, he was beloved by everyone, and has left not a mark but a footprint. An incredible legacy. Jimmy, thank you for everything you gave us. I love you. And I send so much love to Debbie and your whole beautiful family."

Messing shared several photos with Burrows from the set of *Will & Grace*, illustrating her fond memories working together for 11 seasons.

"I can't express the pain of his loss, and I know that is true for everyone who was lucky enough to be loved by him," she wrote on Instagram. "Jimmy changed my life 28 years ago and has been in my life ever since. He had a dry sense of humor but exploded in laughter when he orchestrated comic moments that landed. I wanted his laughs most of all."

"He loved and trusted his actors (which is rare in tv comedy)," Messing continued. "He let us play and explore and fail terribly and would always see the gem in what was happening, and like a conductor, he taught us how to play the music... Every person he allowed in his sphere felt respected, admired, and important. We were, are, family, and always will be. Every cast member who had the rare privilege of being directed by him for nearly a decade, felt like one of his kids. And today, we lost our TV dad."

Megan Mullally, who earned two Emmy Awards for her portrayal of drunken socialite and Grace's assistant Karen Walker, tells EW, "Jimmy was really the master of an entire genre of comedy, and his passing marks the end of an era. I learned so much about comedy from him. Thank you for your mastery, Jimmy, and for your belief in me."

Sean Hayes, who won an Emmy Award for his role as Will's friend Jack McFarland, reposted a touching tribute by his husband, Scott Icenogle, a composer who worked on *Will & Grace*.

"The world lost a cultural, television icon today - James 'Jimmy' Burrows," Icenogle captioned a snapshot of himself with Burrows and Hayes. "Jimmy was a dear friend and I am incredibly grateful to have had many fun times with him both personally and professionally. Sean and I are sending his incredible wife, Debbie, and his loving family all our love and support during this difficult time."

Tim Bagley, who recurred on *Will & Grace* as Larry and later worked with Burrows on the third season of *The Comeback*, tells EW that he first met James Burrows while he was a page at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, seating guests for live tapings of *Cheers**.*

*"*He was a genius and I learned so much by just watching him work. Later, when I worked on *Will & Grace* he remembered me from when I was a page. He took my fellow page pal, Peter Chakos, under his wing while we were pages, and made Pete his primary editor," Bagley says. "He was always very generous and kind. As a director he was very specific. He'd say, 'slap your hand down on the bar to emphasize your last word Timmy, and then run out.' I would do it, and it got a big laugh and I never knew why. I trusted him completely. He had a clear vision and just knew how to make things funny. On *The Comeback* he had a beautiful speech about the importance of writers. I hope people replay that speech over and over. He loved writers and was so happy to be able to say those words on *The Comeback*. He always made me feel very special and talented. I am so grateful for the times I got to spend with him."

Burrows received 12 Emmy Award nominations for the series, winning the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series in 2000.

The Utah judge in the murder case over Charlie Kirk's killing says he will rule Monday whether prosecutors could face sanctions for comments to the media about a bullet fragment recovered from the conservative activist's body.

Lawyers for defendant Tyler Robinson have asked Judge Tony Graf to block the death penalty in the case, claiming the prosecutors' comments could sway potential jurors regarding his guilt.

But criminal law expert Paul Cassell said it would be extraordinary for Graf to grant the defense request. Their concerns could be addressed in other ways, such as more closely questioning jurors to ensure they aren't biased, the University of Utah law professor said.

"A standard defense attorney maneuver is to avoid talking about the guilt or innocence of your client. The theory is that as long as you're talking about anything other than whether the defendant is guilty, you're winning as a defense attorney," Cassell said. "This seems to be an extreme example of that."

Representatives of the Utah County Attorney's Office said they were compelled to speak publicly about the case following speculation in some media outlets.

The speculation began after the defense team publicly disclosed that initial tests were inconclusive to determine whether the bullet was fired from the suspected murder weapon.

Conjecture over the evidence in Kirk's killing has fueled unsubstantiated conspiracy theories that there might have been a second shooter, or that his death was staged. The case has attracted enormous media attention and concerns from both sides about misinformation tainting the potential jury pool.

Robinson has not yet entered a plea. Prosecutors have said they intend to seek the death penalty if he is convicted.

The 23-year-old from southwestern Utah is charged with aggravated murder in the Sept. 10 killing of Kirk, a close ally of President Donald Trump who was shot in the neck while addressing a crowd of thousands at Utah Valley University.

Judge Graf held a hearing last week over whether prosecutors should be held in contempt for their comments about the bullet.

Robinson's attorneys accused prosecutors including Deputy Utah County Attorney Christopher Ballard of trying to influence potential jurors by going on a "media tour" to talk about ballistics evidence in the case.

Ballard argued at the June 12 hearing that he didn't speak to the media about case specifics, and he only remarked generally about how ballistics testing can be inconclusive.

The defense team also pointed to another Utah criminal case in which prosecutors were accused of contempt and suggested that one potential remedy would be to bar the state from seeking the death penalty.

While the judge in that earlier case disagreed that an order barring the death penalty was merited, Robinson's attorneys noted that "the court did not conclude that such a remedy was beyond its authority where the facts support it."

A key hearing in Robinson's case is scheduled for July 6-10, when prosecutors must show they have enough evidence to warrant a trial.

BEIJING (AP) — China on Monday announced sanctions on 10 American military-related companies in response to a recent U.S. move that bars some leading Chinese tech companies from defense contracts.

The Commerce Ministry said that Chinese companies would be blocked from exporting "dual-use" items to the 10 companies, which include military drone makers and some involved in rare earth mining. Dual use refers to goods that can have military as well as non-military applications.

The ministry said the export ban was both to safeguard China's national security and in response to what it called the U.S. government's "wrongful expansion of its so-called List of Chinese Military Companies."

Separately, the Finance Ministry said that government entities would be prohibited from buying products from 46 American companies including multiple units of Lockheed Martin, Raytheon and General Dynamics. A brief statement did not give any reason for the prohibition.

Earlier this month, the U.S. Defense Department added several tech companies including Alibaba and Baidu to its list of firms that it says have links to the Chinese military. Baidu said the suggestion that it is a military company is "totally baseless."

The designation prevents them from getting U.S. military contracts.

The Commerce Ministry said at the time that the American sanctions run counter to the consensus that Chinese leader Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump reached during Trump's visit to China in May.

In Monday's announcement, the ministry said that companies or individuals in third countries are prohibited from transferring dual-use items from China to the sanctioned American firms. It also said that Chinese companies could apply for export approval for goods that are "genuinely necessary."

The 10 companies are AVEOX in Simi Valley, California; Red Cat Holdings and Teal Drones, both in South Salt Lake, Utah; IMSAR in Springville, Utah; Jaia Robotics in Bristol, Rhode Island; Ball Aerospace & Technologies in Broomfield, Colorado; Oshkosh Defense in Oshkosh, Wisconsin; L3Harris Maritime Services in Norfolk, Virginia; MP Materials in Las Vegas; and USA Rare Earth in Stillwater, Oklahoma.

June 22 (Reuters) - A look at the day ahead in European and global markets from Wayne Cole.

It's been a choppy session in Asia as off-again, on-again ‌peace talks between the U.S. and Iran seemed to make progress.

The whole process ‌looked in doubt after President Trump threatened fresh attacks on Iran, and Tehran said it had closed the Strait of Hormuz again.

Then Iranian negotiators said progress had actually been made in the first session of talks, while officials for Oman and Pakistan stated a committee was being formed to run the discussions with an eye to reaching a deal in 60 days.

The status of the strait was ‌not entirely clear, with shipping having slowed after U.S. Central Command said 55 vessels passed on Saturday, while tracking showed 32 the day before. Iran also suggested a mechanism would be set up to control the vital waterway, presumably including some sort of fee on shipping.

The apparent progress saw Brent reverse course and slip 2.5% to under $79.00 a barrel, while Asian share markets swung higher. Wall Street futures and Treasuries pared early losses, though the mounting risk of a ‌Federal Reserve rate hike loomed large.

Futures imply around a 75% chance of a rate rise as early as September and 41 basis points of tightening by year-end. Yields on 2-year Treasuries duly touched the highest since early 2025 at 4.2276%.

Trump also caused a stir in the UK by posting that Prime Minister Keir Starmer was set to resign, after multiple media reports ‌that Starmer would announce his exit plans to allow a leadership contest by rival Andy Burnham, who won an election for a seat in parliament decisively last week.

If true, Burnham is considered certain to take the ‌top job and likely to shake up the cabinet including replacing finance minister Rachel Reeves. The gilt market is unsure how committed Burnham is to fiscal strictness and worried he could end up spending and borrowing more.

Key developments that could influence markets on Monday:

- ‌Federal Reserve Board Governor Christopher Waller gives welcome remarks

- ECB President Christine Lagarde and Economy Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis speak

- EU consumer confidence for June

- Canadian inflation for May

- Stephen Colbert wore a tan suit to the Obama Presidential Center opening — calling back to when the former president wore the same in 2014.

- The comedian brought up the fashion moment while touring the Chicago center in May, and Barack Obama had no regrets.

- David Letterman and Obama Foundation Chairman Martin Nesbitt also dressed for the occasion in tan ensembles.

Stephen Colbert is dressed to impress.

The former *Late Show* host and comedian attended the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago with a fashionable nod to the library's namesake: a tan suit.

Colbert rocked a light beige suit with a blue-and-brown striped tie for the occasion, calling back to when former president Barack Obama wore a tan suit to a press conference in August 2014, where he addressed combatting ISIS in Syria.

The day after Obama wore the suit and subsequently broke the internet, then-White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said, ”The president stands squarely behind his decision he made yesterday to wear his summer suit," per The Hill.

Obama called back to the eyebrow-raising moment in his presidency in May, appearing on a *The Late Show With Stephen Colbert** *segment to give viewers a preview of the Chicago library*.*

“Is it safe to assume that some of these displays commemorate your greatest achievements as president?” Colbert asked Obama walking through the building. “Is there a wing dedicated to the greatest blunders? Is the tan suit here? I’m asking if the tan suit is here,” Colbert added, egging him on.

"Listen, I own that tan suit proudly, brother,” Obama quipped. "When you look back at the tan suit, what occurs to you?" Colbert pressed. The former president had a one-word answer: "Fly."

"How y'all like my tan suit?" Nesbitt asked the crowd during his opening remarks on Thursday, NBC Chicago reported.

"It was inspired by a very good friend of mine who made tan suits famous. I don't know about the rest of you all, but I thought he looked pretty good wearing his, so I decided to wear one myself."
