Ethel Kennedy (née Skakel) played a big role in shaping the Kennedy family legacy.

The late human rights activist, who died in October 2024, was the widow of U.S. Sen. Robert F. "Bobby" Kennedy and the sister-in-law of former President John F. Kennedy. Ethel and Robert wed in 1950, became parents in 1951 and remained married until his 1968 assassination.

Following his death, the mother of 11 vowed never to remarry, telling PEOPLE in 1991 that it would be "adultery."

"How could I possibly do that with Bobby looking down from heaven?" she said.

Now, the Kennedy family has a new spotlight on them with Ryan Murphy's FX series, Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette, which chronicles the romance between JFK's only son and the Calvin Klein publicist. The series also features Ethel in episode 5, "Battery Park," as the couple takes a trip to the family's compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., and must face her slew of rules, from couples sitting apart at the dinner table to sign-ups for breakfast.

Here's everything to know about Ethel Kennedy.

She was from Chicago

Ethel was born in Chicago on April 11, 1928, to her dad George Skakel, a coal magnate, and Ann Brannack. They died in 1955, when their private plane crashed in Oklahoma.

Ethel was the second youngest child among her three sisters and three brothers. According to the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library and Museum, the family moved to Greenwich, Conn., in 1936 when Ethel was 5 years old.

Ethel went on to attend Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart in New York City, where she met and eventually became roommates with RFK's sister, Jean Kennedy.

Ethel met Robert after being introduced by Jean on a ski trip in Québec, Canada. Robert was in a relationship with Ethel's older sister Patricia for some time, but began dating Ethel after their split.

Ethel and Robert got engaged in February 1950, tying the knot four months later on June 17, 1950.

When the then-New York senator announced that he would seek the Democratic Party nomination for the 1968 presidential election, Ethel supported his campaign. RFK biographer Evan Thomas wrote in Robert Kennedy: His Life that Ethel was "always his most fervent believer, was the most consistent advocate of a race for the White House."

They remained together until Robert was assassinated on June 6, 1968. Not only did Ethel witness the murder, but she was also pregnant with their youngest child, Rory, at the time.

She had 11 children and over 30 grandchildren

Ethel became a mom in July 1951, when she and Robert welcomed their first child, daughter Kathleen. Between then and 1958, Ethel went on to welcome 10 more children: Joseph, Robert Jr., David, Courtney, Michael, Kerry, Christopher, Max, Douglas and Rory, who was born after her father's death.

Ethel outlived two of her children: David died of a drug overdose in April 1984, while Michael died after a skiing accident in December 1997. Several of the other Kennedy children went on to work their own political and legal careers, while Rory, a filmmaker, released a 2012 documentary titled Ethel, which included interviews with the Kennedys and gave an insider look at their political dynasty.

Many of Ethel's children also started families of their own, making Ethel a grandmother to over 30 grandchildren.

She was "tough" but tried to "protect" Bessette

As portrayed in episode 5 of Love Story, the Kennedy cousins did gather at the family compound in Massachusetts and were subjected to Ethel's current events quizzes. According to J. Randy Taraborrelli's book The Kennedy Heirs, Ethel met Bessette in September 1994, and just like portrayed in the show, JFK Jr. asked his girlfriend to call her "Mrs. Kennedy" before being introduced.During the dinner, Ethel asked Bessette her opinion on the federal assault weapons ban. When she was unsure on her response, Ethel told Bessette she might want to "read up" on it, per Taraborrelli's book. Then, following JFK Jr. and Bessette's publicized fight in a N.Y.C. park, Taraborrelli wrote that Ethel summoned Carolyn to her home in Virginia, where they had a frank talk. She was allegedly surprised when Bessette admitted to feeling insecure in her relationship and proceeded to give her some candid advice about fitting in with the Kennedys."I went through that with Bobby at first. Then I finally got it that the only way to survive in this family is to look in the mirror and say 'You know what? I'm enough,' " Ethel told Bessette, per Taraborrelli's book. "Eventually it will sink in and no one can ever take that way from you. Not even the Kennedys."Ethel also allegedly told Bessette that she was "more powerful" than any of the other women JFK Jr. dated and advised her to not change who she was on the inside. Taraborrelli added that while Ethel was "tough," she also tried to "protect" Bessette.

She was a human rights activist

While Ethel supported her husband's campaigns, she also built a career of her own as a human rights advocate and devoted her later years to public service, including the Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Project.

Following her husband's death, she founded the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights to continue his work.

On Nov. 24, 2014, then-President Barack Obama awarded her the Presidential Medal of Freedom for a lifetime of contributions to social justice, human rights, environmental protection and poverty reduction.

She died in October 2024

Ethel died at 96 years old on Oct. 10, 2024, from "complications related to a stroke" she suffered one week earlier, as her daughter Kerry shared in a statement on X.

"She was a devout Catholic and a daily communicant, and we are comforted in knowing she is reunited with the love of her life, our father, Robert F. Kennedy; her children David and Michael; her daughter-in-law Mary; her grandchildren Maeve and Saoirse; and her great-grandchildren Gideon and Josie," the statement read.

A little over a month after her death, Ethel was laid to rest next to Robert at Arlington National Cemetery.

Kerry shared photos from the funeral service on Instagram, writing, "Her extraordinary life and enduring legacy will continue to guide and inspire us."

Kate Moss is making a cheeky appearance at Milan Fashion Week.

On Friday, Feb. 27, the British supermodel, 52, returned to the runway to walk for Gucci in a daring ensemble. Kate performed her signature strut in a glittering black mock-neck gown with long sleeves.

She also carried a silver clutch and wore silver drop earrings. Her hair was styled into tousled waves, and she sported a smoky-eyed makeup look.

The dress may have looked conservative from the front but painted an entirely different picture from the back, which dipped down past her butt and revealed a black thong with a sparkling Gucci logo, as seen in a front row video from Vogue.

The model previously shared a sweet mother-daughter moment at London Fashion Week.

On Monday, Feb. 23, the model and her 23-year-old model daughter, Lila Moss, were spotted sitting side by side as Burberry unveiled its Fall 2026 Ready-to-Wear Collection at Old Billingsgate.

The pair sat among other celebrities, including Olivia Dean, Daisy Edgar-Jones and Stellan Skarsgård as the trench coat-heavy fall collection from Burberry's chief creative officer, Daniel Lee, was unveiled at the London venue.

In one snap from the outing, Kate wrapped her arm around her lookalike daughter's arm as they smiled and chatted together.

The duo opted for coordinating looks at the show.

Kate wore all black, layering a trench coat over a silky slip minidress. She accessorized with matching pumps and a stack of two chunky silver necklaces and statement dangling earrings.

Her model daughter, meanwhile, also wore a trench-adjacent coat — though hers, a neutral shade, was buttoned all the way up. Lila's coat featured dark buttons and a black ribbon detail, which she complemented with a pair of snakeskin pumps.

Lila, whom Kate shares with ex-boyfriend Jefferson Hack, documented her Fashion Week activities on Instagram, including reposting a photo of herself at the Burberry show with an emoji of the United Kingdom flag.

Alongside a rainy photo of the city, she wrote, "London was pretty last night." She then followed it up with a sunnier post, captioned, "London even prettier today!!!! Hi blue skies."

Luke Grimes confesses he didn't know what a procedural show was until signing on for Marshals

The Yellowstone spinoff sees Grimes' Kayce Dutton join an elite unit of U.S. Marshals a year after the original series' finale

Marshals premieres on Sunday, March 1, on CBS

When Luke Grimes got the call to be a part of Marshals, he didn't know what a procedural was.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Grimes, 42, opened up about getting back in the saddle for the Yellowstone spinoff series as cowboy Kayce Dutton and admitted he didn't know what a show with a procedural format entailed.

"My mom loves procedurals," he said. "I wasn't too familiar with the format. I was like, 'His story ended so perfectly. I don't know if we should go back into it.' I was very reluctant at first. I'd never heard of anything like this before."

After Marshals showrunner Spencer Hudnut shared his vision of the "non-traditional procedural" with Grimes, the actor was on board.

"I realized we're not just trying to juice a stone and get a paycheck, there really is a story to tell," Grimes explained. "This guy used to be a SEAL, and we never explored that."

— sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

The CBS spinoff sees Kayce a year after the end of Yellowstone as he joins an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, blending his Montana lifestyle with his former experience as a Navy SEAL.

Per the official synopsis, "Kayce and his teammates must balance the high psychological cost of serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence with their duty to their families, which for Kayce includes his son Tate and his confidantes Mo (Mo Brings Plenty) and Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham) from the Broken Rock reservation."

"Part of what we wanna do with this show is really explore the cost and consequences of being someone who runs into the fire," Hudnut said. "How do you do the most intense job in the world and then come home?"

In the original series, the tortured cowboy met his happy ending when he chose to walk away from his family's ranch and build a new life with his wife, Monica (Kelsey Asbille), and their son, Tate (Brecken Merrill).

For Marshals, Hudnut knew "that something had to shake him out of that."

Grimes previously told PEOPLE that Marshals will "find a whole new world" for the youngest of the Dutton clan.

"We definitely wanted to make sure to give it a real story and make it interesting and make it believable," the Happiness for Beginners star explained. "If it was just like, 'Well, he's happy' — we're just going to watch him be happy? That's not very cool."

"But I'll say this, the idea that was pitched to me is very, very good and very interesting, and it really roped me in, and I think it will rope the audience in as well," he said.

Marshals premieres Sunday, March 1, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS.

Kardea Brown reflects on wrapping Kids Baking Championship: Next Gen

She says the young contestants taught her confidence, creativity and Gen Alpha slang

Brown tells PEOPLE she feels protective of the kids both on and off screen

As this season of Kids Baking Championship: Next Gen comes to a close, Kardea Brown is feeling grateful — and a little emotional.

In a heartfelt Instagram post shared Feb. 27, the Food Network star, 38, reflected on wrapping production, writing that her "heart is so full" after watching the young contestants step into the kitchen with "courage, creativity, and pure joy."

Two children decorating cakes on Kids Baking Championship: Next GenCredit: Food Network

"Every laugh, every nervous moment, every incredible creation reminded me of the power of curiosity, resilience, and the joy of learning from one another," Brown shared alongside photos from set, including sweet behind-the-scenes moments with the kid chefs and co-host Duff Goldman, 51.

The cookbook author went on to muse on how meaningful the series has been to her. "Hosting alongside my dear friend @duffgoldman has been such a gift… his knowledge and laughter made every challenge brighter," she wrote, before adding that it was ultimately the children who left the biggest impression. "They reminded me to dream boldly, to take risks, and to savor every messy, beautiful moment."

Speaking directly to the kid bakers who competed through the season, Brown thanked them for sharing their hearts, adding, "I am endlessly inspired by you, and I can't wait to see all the sweetness you bring into the world."

The sentiment echoes what Brown recently told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about her experience filming the series. While she noted expecting plenty of baking talent, she didn't anticipate getting a crash course in Gen Alpha slang.

"Listen, these kids had me learning new words every day," Brown recalled at the time. "They'd say something and I'd be like, 'Wait — what does that mean?'" From calling a dessert "mid" to declaring that anything "ate," the sibling duos competing on the series kept her on her toes. "I was like, okay, I need a translator," Brown joked. "But I loved it. They were teaching me."

Beyond the playful language, Brown said working with children feels deeply personal. Before becoming a Food Network mainstay, she worked as a school teacher and social worker — experiences that shape how she shows up on set. "Working with the kids is something totally different because it takes me back to my time where I was a school teacher and social worker," she told PEOPLE. "So it just puts me right back in my element with food and children."

As she wrote in her recent post, the experience has made a profound impact on her culinary prowess and beyond. The contestants, she highlighted, "made me a better host, a better baker, and maybe even a better person."

I know you know the right answer to this infamous question: "What's your favorite scary movie?" Scream!

Part seven of the infinite horror movie franchise, Scream, hits theaters on Feb. 27. The iconic movie, which first premiered on Dec. 20, 1996, 30 years ago this year, is going to be an interesting and spooky addition to the previous films.

Scream 7 centers around adult Sidney, whose daughter becomes Ghostface's current obsession, taking everyone back to the town of Woodsboro, Calif., where the murders began. Obviously, this spells TROUBLE!

With so many fresh characters, there will be some familiar faces in the mix. Neve Campbell and Courtney Cox reclaim their notorious roles, as Sidney Prescott and Gail Weathers, respectively, making it a can't-miss moment in cinema. Also, Matthew Lillard, who plays Stu Mather, and David Arquette, who plays Dewey Riley, will be reprising their roles, taking us back to the original Scream movie.

Twins Mindy Meeks-Martin and Chad Meeks-Martin, portrayed by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding in Scream 5 and Scream 6, are coming back to help solve the case. Hopefully, Randy Meeks' niece and nephew, and members of the sequel's "Core Four," can assist.

Now that the movie is coming out, looking at which character aligns with your Sun sign can offer a new perspective on the film.Read below to find out yours.

Aries: Gale Weathers

Courtney Cox as Gale Weathers.Credit: Dimension Films/Kobal/Shutterstock

Gale is ambitious and determined to crack the case and identify Ghostface. Aries (Gale's birthday is April 18) are known for their desire to win at all they do — even if that means getting a few bruises and cuts along the way to becoming a star reporter and best-selling author. Gale's persistence and investigative skills align with the tenacious sign, Aries, which exudes confidence.

Taurus: Samantha Carpenter

Melissa Barrera.Credit: Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

Samantha's birthday is May 19, making her a Taurus. The Bull has amazing attributes that resemble Samantha — both are loyal, stubborn and reliable. Samantha yearns for stability, which is why she leaves Woodsboro in the first place. Taurus does anything to ensure they have peace of mind, so Samantha takes a cue from her star sign in hopes of finding a slice of happiness.

Gemini: Ethan Landry and Quinn Bailey

Ethan Landry and Quinn Bailey.Credit: Paramount Pictures / Courtesy Everett; Philippe Bossé/Paramount Pictures

Gemini can be deceptive and dualistic, as seen in the killers of Scream 6, who are siblings, Quinn and Ethan. The audience doesn't realize they're even related, giving the movie a twist ending. Since Gemini is the sign of siblings, it is no wonder that these two align with the Air sign, mostly because they keep the secret that they are related throughout the film.

Cancer: Mrs. Loomis

Laurie Metcalf.Credit: Dimension Films

The sign Cancer is the "mama" of the zodiac. While other crabs make scrapbooks of the deceased and mourn their losses, Mrs. Loomis intends to protect Billy's legacy by plotting revenge for the death of her murderous son. A typical Cancer's maternal instincts may not go to this extent, but the point is, they'll go to the limit for those they love, especially their children.

Leo: Stu Macher

Matthew Lillard.Credit: Dimension Films

Before finding out that Stu's birthday is Aug. 4, it's pretty clear he's a Leo. Stu is the center of attention, even making jokes and quips until his final scene. By saying that he's "far too sensitive" (which most Leos are) and blaming his heinous acts on "peer pressure," Stu is deflecting and gaslighting, which is a shadow trait of Leo when they get caught.

Virgo: Billy Loomis

Skeet Ulrich.Credit: Miramax/Kobal/Shutterstock

Only a meticulous Virgo could pull off the first Ghostface murders in Woodsboro without getting caught until the end of the movie. Billy's birthday is Sept. 19, affiliating him with the Earth sign. Throughout the film, there are clues to his Virgo status. For instance, his Mercury ability to avoid being a prime suspect by framing others, particularly Sidney's father, and his calm, unsuspecting demeanor.

Libra: Mindy Meeks-Martin and Chad Meeks-Martin

Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown.Credit: Philippe Bosse/Paramount Pictures; Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

The twins were born on Sept. 30, so they're Libras. To be honest, their flirtatiousness and intelligence totally reveal their Libra-ness. The Air sign uses their knowledge of every matter under the sun to get the attention of the person they're crushing on. At times, the twins are lovelorn, but that's because their zodiac is one of the most romantic — they can't help it!

Scorpio: Jill Roberts

Emma Roberts.Credit: Dimension Films/Kobal/Shutterstock

Jill is a manipulator and conniver, which links her to Scorpio, a zodiac sign known for its mysterious personality and brooding passion. Like Scorpio, Jill is able to hide her frustrations, only losing her cool when the task isn't done. Scorpios can be temperamental when things don't go their way, resulting in them going to intense levels to complete their objectives. And, does Jill ever…

Sagittarius: Tara Carpenter

Jenna Ortega.Credit: Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Tara is the ultimate "Final Girl." She uses her instincts, smarts, wit, and strengths to survive Ghostface — we wouldn't expect anything less from a Sagittarius (her birthday is on Dec 14). The archer is the cosmic guard of the universe, as it resides by the Milky Way. Like Sagittarius, Tara uses defensive forces and tactics to pull through and make it to another day.

Capricorn: Amber Freeman

Mikey Madison.Credit: Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Capricorns put 100% into every endeavor and venture they undertake, which explains why Amber goes to lengths to befriend Tara and Sam — striking out against Tara to get Samantha back in Woodsboro. Amber wants to make the "requel" of the murders with her boyfriend, Richie, and stops at nothing. Beyond the killing spree, Amber is cunning and sarcastic — the sea goat's the latter.

Aquarius: Dewey Riley

David Arquette.Credit: Brownie Harris/Paramount Pictures

Dewy's an Aquarius to the core, which is confirmed by his Feb. 5th birthday. The water bearer and Dewey fight for justice (since Aquarius stands up against societal wrongdoings and later becomes a deputy sheriff, then the sheriff). Dewey is quirky, like an Air sign, and genuinely kind and sincere — no matter how many times Gail and him argue (because they always make up).

Pisces: Sidney Prescott

Neve Campbell.Credit: Jessica Miglio/Paramount Pictures

Sidney's birthday is March 14, connecting her to Pisces. In the beginning, Sidney was blinded by love; however, as the franchise progresses, she is rarely put in that situation again. The Water sign, Pisces, does not forgive or forget easily, since they hold on to the past tightly. Pisces are sure never to make the same mistake twice — once bitten, twice shy, like Sidney.

During the couple's pastor's ceremony prayer, a Chris Brown song unexpectedly played

A video of the wedding mishap went viral on TikTok

A wedding playlist had a mind of its own.

Leidi and Luan Rocha were married outside in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on Sept. 28, by their pastor, Devon Frye. While another pastor was praying over the bride and groom during the intimate ceremony, "Forever" by Chris Brown unexpectedly blasted.

"I rebuke the Chris Brown spirit off of this holy moment…" Frye, 33, wrote in the caption of a clip of the DJ mishap that was posted on TikTok the next day. The singer has a history of controversial behavior.

In the video, the pastor who worked with the Rochas on marriage counseling, began his prayer, saying, "Thank you, Lord..." before being interrupted with the electronic pulse intro of "Forever." As the song loudly played, Frye snapped his eyes open and frowned before smiling. The bride also smiled after she gasped in shock. Meanwhile, the 50 or so guests chuckled off-screen.

The song stopped after a few seconds, but it would take a few more for the giggles to end. The pastor momentarily stumbled over his words but kept the ceremony on track by continuing his prayer, thanking the Lord for His protection and guidance.

The hilarious clip went viral with 15.4 million views and 1.7 million likes.

"The pastor loosing [sic] his place and guiding them multiple times is sending me 💀," an individual commented, with someone else agreeing, "Guy praying was thrown off so bad he's repeating 😭😭😭😭."

Another top comment reads, "THIS IS UNFORTUNATELY SO FUNNY."

"I said CHRIST, not Chris 🙄😂," one TikTok user teased.

Exclusively speaking with PEOPLE, Frye reflected on the DJ fail, joking, "I thought the DJ that played the song was too ready to party."

He continues, "Everybody laughed and couldn't keep it together."

Frye decided to share the video on social media because everyone at the wedding thought that the ceremony mistake was so "funny." However, he notes that he "had no idea it would go as viral as it did."

Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy got married in 1950 and were married until his assassination in 1968

The couple welcomed 11 children throughout their marriage, and Ethel was pregnant with their 11th child when Robert died

She died in October 2024, having never remarried out of respect for her late husband's memory

Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy's romance was one for the ages.

The couple, who were married for 18 years, were dedicated to fighting for human rights before the former U.S. attorney general was assassinated in 1968. At the time of her husband's death, Ethel was pregnant with their 11th child, Rory.

She went on to uphold the Kennedy family legacy for decades, until the human rights activist died on Oct. 10, 2024, at 96 years old from complications related to a stroke. Her daughter, Kerry, confirmed the news in a statement on X.

Ethel and Robert first met in 1945 while they were in college, though the politician had dated her sister, Patricia Skakel, for two years earlier. By 1950, the couple were married.

"We both wanted a lot of children, but there wasn't a huge discussion about it," Ethel told PEOPLE in 2012. "It wasn't a big deal. We were both from big families."

From how they met to the Taylor Swift song inspired by their great love, here's everything to know about Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy's relationship.

Ethel was just 17 years old when she met her future husband, the brother of her roommate at Manhattanville College in 1945. In a 2012 interview with PEOPLE, the Kennedy matriarch shared that she knew she'd marry Robert "as soon as [I] met him" on a ski trip in Quebec.

"No maybe about it," she said.

However, she had to bide her time as the future senator dated her sister, Patricia, for two years. After their breakup, Ethel and Robert began dating and were soon engaged.

Ethel and Robert got engaged in early 1950 and got married on June 17, 1950, at St. Mary Roman Catholic Church in Greenwich, Conn. At the reception, all the bridesmaids were thrown into a pool and the Boston Globe lauded the ceremony as the "prettiest of the year."

The young couple honeymooned in Hawaii and soon settled in Virginia, where Robert was set to attend the University of Virginia School of Law.

By 1956, the couple and their young family moved into Hickory Hill, their iconic 13-bedroom home in McLean, Va.

Their relationship inspired a Taylor Swift song

In 2012, the pop star was dating Ethel's grandson, Conor Kennedy, and shared in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that her song "Starlight" was inspired by Ethel and Robert's love story.

In the song, which is written from Ethel's perspective, Swift sings, "I met Bobby on the boardwalk, summer of '45 / Picked me up, late one night at the window / We were seventeen and crazy, running wild, wild."

In the bridge of the song, she continues, "Ooh, ooh, he's talking crazy / Ooh, ooh, dancing with me / Ooh, ooh, we could get married / Have ten kids and teach 'em how to dream," referencing the 11 kids the couple ultimately shared.

The inspiration for the song came from a photo Swift saw of the two dancing.

"It immediately made me think of like how much fun they must have had that night. It was back in the late '40s," she said. "I ended up reading underneath that it was Ethel Kennedy and Robert F. Kennedy ... So I just kind of wrote that song from that place, not really knowing how they met or anything like that."

The Kennedys' first child, Kathleen, was born on July 4, 1951, and they went on to welcome 10 more children after her: Joseph, Robert Jr., David, Courtney, Michael, Kerry, Christopher, Max, Douglas and Rory.

Ethel was pregnant with Rory when Robert was assassinated, giving birth to their youngest child six months after his death. Some of the couple's children went on to follow in their father's footsteps with careers in politics, most notably Robert Jr., who dropped out of the 2024 presidential election in August 2024. He was confirmed as the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services the following year.

Kathleen was Maryland's lieutenant governor, while Joseph served in Congress.

In her 96 years, Ethel suffered a number of personal tragedies, including the deaths of David and Michael. Following his father's death, David struggled with drug addiction, ultimately dying of an overdose in 1984 when he was 28 years old. Michael died 15 years later in a skiing accident in Aspen, Colo., at 39 years old.

When asked how she got through the pain, Ethel told PEOPLE in 2012, "I pretty well lived in the moment. And I was blessed with faith."

Ethel was deeply immersed in both her brother-in-law John F. Kennedy's and husband Robert's political careers. Ethel joined John on his campaign trail as he ran for president in 1960 and was by Robert's side during his rise from attorney general to senator and, ultimately, presidential hopeful.

In February 1962, Ethel joined her husband on a worldwide trip with stops in Japan, Hong Kong and Italy so that people across the globe could meet what she described as normal Americans.

"People have a distinct liking for Americans," she told the Washington Post in 1962. "It is good for Americans to travel and get our viewpoint across."

She was present the night he was assassinated

Robert was killed by Sirhan Sirhan on June 5, 1968, just after midnight at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles after winning the California primary in the presidential election.

Ethel was present that night and was by his side as he died in a hospital a day later. She told PEOPLE in 2012 that it was her ardent Catholic faith that helped her keep going in the wake of the tragedy.

"I'd wake up in the morning and think he was happy in heaven and he had Jack — and they were together as they had been together on earth," she said. "I didn't think how I would survive. I knew it would happen but I didn't know how."

Though she'd been spotted in the years since with various men, Ethel vowed to never remarry or have another serious relationship out of respect to Robert's memory.

"How could I possibly do that with Bobby looking down from heaven?" she told PEOPLE in 1991. "That would be adultery."

Ethel started a foundation in his honor

To uphold his legacy, Ethel started the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights (now called Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights), which awards honorable work by journalists and human rights activists.

For the five decades after her husband's death, Ethel remained active in social issues that were important to her and her husband such as the rights of migrant workers and care for the environment.

Now, her daughter Kerry runs the foundation, but up until her death, Ethel was passionate about carrying on Robert's legacy and raising their 11 children.

"She's committed to carry out the ideals that inspired my father to taking care of the family and to creating a warm and loving place," Kathleen told the Washington Post in 1981.
