- *Marshals *is a *Yellowstone* spinoff following Luke Grimes' Kayce Dutton as he embarks on a new career as a U.S. marshal.

- Gil Birmingham, Mo Brings Plenty, and Brecken Merrill are among the *Yellowstone* vets reprising their roles.

- The series premieres Sunday, March 1, on CBS and Paramount+.

Kayce Dutton is venturing into black hat territory on *Marshals*.

The *Yellowstone* spinoff, debuting in March on CBS, finds Luke Grimes reprising the youngest Dutton sibling as he embarks on a new career path as a U.S. Marshal. If that sounds like a left-field pivot, remember that Kayce was once a Navy SEAL.

"I realized we're not just trying to juice a stone and get a paycheck, there really is a story to tell," Grimes said in **'s February 2026 cover story. "This guy used to be a SEAL, and we never explored that."

What Grimes did explore was the darkness in Kayce's soul. "Clearly, he's got demons, and his arc was trying to heal and find his path. In the original *Yellowstone*, he did that," he said. With Marshals, however, we're "in black hat territory again."

What does that mean? And who's joining Grimes in the hills of Montana? Can you expect to see any *Yellowstone* alums cross his path? Read on for everything we know about *Marshals*.**

What is Marshals about?

According to the show's official logline, *Marshals* finds Kayce Dutton joining "an elite unit of U.S. Marshals, combining his skills as a cowboy and Navy SEAL to bring range justice to Montana, where he and his teammates must balance family, duty and the high psychological cost that comes with serving as the last line of defense in the region's war on violence."

Grimes calls Marshals an "action show" while showrunner Spencer Hudnut describes it as a "non-traditional procedural." It's set a year after the events of the *Yellowstone* finale, during which Kayce and his sister sold most of their family's land to Thomas Rainwater (Gil Birmingham). Kayce, however, held on to the East Camp, where he lives with his family and cows.

Describing Kayce as a "changed man," Hudnut said the "downtime that he's had between the end of that show and the start of ours has forced him to confront some of his demons and really focus on being a father."

Kayce finds his way into the U.S. Marshals via Pete "Cal" Calvin (Logan Marshall-Green), the former leader of his SEAL Team unit.

"Part of what we wanna do with this show is really explore the cost and consequences of being someone who runs into the fire," Hudnut told EW. "How do you do the most intense job in the world and then come home?"

Some of those jobs will center on the region's Indigenous population. "We get into some subject matter that is very realistic and [features] present-day challenges for the res," Birmingham said. "We're going to address real-life things — mining companies trying to come along, drug cartels."

Is there a Marshals trailer?

There are two trailers — and both are heavy on action, gunfire, explosions, and clenched jaws.

The first arrived in January, highlighting Cal's recruitment of Kayce. "I know you got your own demons to conquer," Cal says, "but jumping back into the fire is gonna do you well."

We also get an idea of the threats faced by the Marshals, from local gangs to "the most violent criminal network in this hemisphere." Eek.

The second trailer, which arrived roughly a week prior to *Marshals*' premiere, showcases how Kayce's involvement with the Marshals comes with complications. Their boss, played by Brett Cullen, is skeptical about him joining the team.

"Marshals uphold the law," he says. "Duttons bend it."**

His concerns are founded. When Cal tells him that Marshals "fight clean," an angry Kayce says he "fights to win." The subsequent shots tease some of Kayce's more unconventional methods.

Kayce's anger, it seems, is what drives him this season. He's encouraged by Thomas Rainwater to not "confuse vengeance with closure," prompting Kayce to say that "at least vengeance is something I believe in."**

Where does that anger come from? The loss of his land and family, surely, but we have a feeling there's more to the story.**

Will any Yellowstone cast members return for Marshals?

Indeed, Grimes will be joined by a handful of *Yellowstone* alums.

One is Brecken Merrill, who will reprise his role as Tate, Kayce's 17-year-old son. "Kayce having this opportunity to spend more time at home and be more focused on continuing to evolve as a father is definitely one of the big storylines," Hudnut previously told EW. "I think Kayce primarily always saw himself as a provider and a protector to his son, but maybe left the parenting to his wife." (As of this writing, it's still unclear if Kelsey Asbille, who played Kayce's wife on *Yellowstone*, will be part of *Marshals*.)

Birmingham's Thomas Rainwater, the casino magnate and Broken Rock Reservation boss, will also feature heavily on *Marshals* alongside Mo (Mo Brings Plenty), his lethal right hand.

"Watching Kayce and Rainwater's relationship evolve is a really nice storyline for us because they became so close by the end of *Yellowstone,"* Hudnut said. "Rainwater's even a little bit of a paternal figure for Kayce with his dad passing, so their relationship is one of my favorite things in the show."

Who's joining the cast of Marshals?

Kayce will join forces with several new faces as part of the U.S. Marshals, including Ash Santos (*Mayor of Kingstown*), Tatanka Means (*Killers of the Flower Moon*), and Arielle Kebbel (*9-1-1*).

Santos' Andrea is a Bronx native whose transgressions at her previous job got her exiled to Montana. Means plays Miles, a former police officer on Rainwater's Broken Rock Reservation who "got tired of busting his own people and felt he'd be better served protecting them as a Marshal." Kebbel's Belle used to be an ATF agent and is described as "Martha Stewart in cowboy boots."

Brett Cullen (*Winning Time*) will play their boss, Harry Gifford, while Marshall-Green, who's set to appear in Christopher Nolan's *The Odyssey*, portrays Cal, Kayce's former colleague in the SEALs. "It's nice to see Kayce have a friend," Grimes said of Cal. "There's something dark about that history, and it's really cool to watch that unravel over the first season."**

One of Kayce's recurring adversaries throughout season 1 is Randall Clegg, who's played by *The Walking Dead* alum Michael Cudlitz. The patriarch of a local ranching family, Randall appears to harbor resentment for the Duttons.

"Family name doesn't carry water anymore so you gotta hide behind a federal badge?" he says in the series' trailer. "How the mighty have fallen."

*Marshals* was given a 13-episode run by CBS.**

Is there a Marshals release date?

*Marshals* premieres Sunday, March 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. New episodes air on Sundays.

*Marshals* airs on CBS and is available to stream on Paramount+. Premium subscribers can stream it live and on-demand, while Essential subscribers can watch new episodes the day after they air.**
