Finding the right suitor that meets the right price, that could take some time. But that time, there could be urgency that develops on either side because clearly it could rub Jaylen Brown the wrong way."

British rider Oscar Onley has been ruled out of this summer's Tour de France with a shoulder injury, in another blow after a difficult season thus far.

The Scot crashed out of the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes - the prestigious one-week stage race formerly known as the Criterium du Dauphine - two weeks ago.

He plunged over a roadside barrier and narrowly missed falling into a steep ravine, crashing into tree cover above the drop on stage six of the race. The 23-year-old finished the stage but opted not to start the following day, with his team Netcompany-Ineos announcing he had dislocated his shoulder and suffered a knee injury.

His chances of riding this summer's Tour de France, which begins on 4 July, initially appeared high nonetheless. But a team statement released on Thursday announced that medical investigations after his crash confirmed "a significant shoulder injury".

It continued: "Unfortunately, this means Oscar will be unable to compete in this year's Tour de France.

"He has already begun rehabilitation and is making encouraging progress. We wish Oscar a full and speedy recovery."

Onley's withdrawal from the Tour is a further blow to Ineos' planned squad for the race, which was already weakened by the likely loss of time-triallist Josh Tarling, who also crashed on stage six of the Tour Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and fractured his collarbone.

Onley said: "I'm gutted not to be able to line up for the Tour de France this year. My focus is now on recovering and getting my shoulder in a good place, but I'm really motivated to try and make something out of this season.

"I am looking forward to watching the boys racing in France in the coming weeks, especially knowing how hard everyone has worked."

Kelso-born Onley moved to British squad Netcompany-Ineos - who rebranded from Ineos Grenadiers on the eve of the Giro d'Italia - over the winter after a breakout season with Picnic PostNL.

An Ineos squad including Oscar Onley and Kevin Vauquelin won the team time trial at Paris-Nice (AFP/Getty)

Last year he finished fourth at the Tour de France and second in the young riders' classification, going toe-to-toe with champion Tadej Pogacar and runner-up and two-time winner Jonas Vingegaard on some of the race's most difficult mountain stages.

He finished a minute and 12 seconds off the podium, with Florian Lipowitz - winner of the young riders' standings - edging him out of third place.

Onley also finished third overall at the Tour de Suisse, a key warm-up race for the Tour de France, last year, and was signed by Netcompany-Ineos as a home-grown Grand Tour contender.

But he has been unable to replicate those results in his first year with the squad, with illness disrupting the first half to his season. He finished fourth overall at the Volta ao Algarve, his season opener, but abandoned Paris-Nice with illness and then withdrew from the Tour de Romandie on stage one after suffering from a stomach bug.

He said after withdrawing from Romandie: "Been a tough start to the season to be honest and hard not to feel like I've let a lot of people down after all the time and investment from everyone at Ineos Grenadiers."

- A sneak peek at Tom Cruise's upcoming film *Digger* has been released alongside a retrospective montage of the actor's 40-year career.

- The new clip provides glimpses of Cruise's dramatic transformation into Digger Rockwell, a tycoon who holds the fate of the world in his hands.

- Marking Cruise's first collaboration with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu, the film follows "the most powerful man in the world" as he tries to prove he is humanity's savior.

Fans hoping for a closer look at Tom Cruise's transformative performance in *Digger* just got a sweet surprise.

Warner Bros. has unveiled a glimpse of the actor's collaboration with director Alejandro G. Iñárritu via a retrospective montage that explores the highlights of Cruise's 40-year screen career, including a surprise sneak peek at what might be his most over-the-top performance yet.

In the brief teaser of what has been described as a "comedy of catastrophic proportions," Cruise's Digger Rockwell attempts to hype himself up to deliver the "hard truth" to a roomful of people.

"When all else fails, you hit 'em with the truth," the elderly billionaire says to himself — showing off some of Cruise's accent work — as he paces back and forth in what looks like an office with a sole security guard as his company. "Hit 'em with the hard truth. Just bang, bang, bang! Whoo! Whoo!"

Other clips show Digger entering a stark white room filled with people shouting at him, the same people who are later shown in an all-out brawl; several fighter jets flying through the sky; Digger jumping into a split while three others look on; and Digger holding out his arms in a room as a fire builds up behind a curtain.

Per a synopsis, the film will follow Digger, "the most powerful man in the world," as he attempts to prove he is "humanity's savior" before the disaster he unleashed "destroys everything."

*Digger* also stars John Goodman, Jesse Plemons, Sandra Hüller, Riz Ahmed, Emma D'Arcy, Sophie Wilde, and Michael Stuhlbarg.

D'Arcy recently shared their experience working alongside Cruise with ** for a *House of the Dragon* digital cover story.

"It's sort of unparalleled, and Tom Cruise is phenomenal," D'Arcy said. "I'm very excited. I haven't seen it, but I knew while I was in the room that something incredibly special was happening. I would've gone there and shot nothing. I would've been happy just to stand at the door and ogle at that process."

The *House of the Dragon* star described the experience of working with Cruise as "one of those career moments where the whole time it's happening, you can't believe it."

They added, "I had my notebook with me, and anytime that I wasn't shooting, I was just trying to make notes about how Alejandro [and] Tom were working, about that process, about the extraordinary rigor that Alejandro brings to every element of his work."

*Digger* marks Cruise's first film outside the *Mission: Impossible* or *Top Gun* franchises since 2017, when he starred in *American Made* and *The Mummy*. It's also his first collaboration with four-time Oscar winner Iñárritu.

The film is Iñárritu's first since directing 2022's *Bardo: False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths* for Netflix, and his first English-language film since 2015's *The Revenant*.

"All I can say is it is a brutal, wild comedy of catastrophic proportions. It's insane. It's scary and funny and beautiful. I know comedy is not what people expect from me, or Tom, and making this film was terrifying for me," Iñárritu told Deadline Hollywood at the Cannes Film Festival in May. "But I don't like to repeat myself, and every film should scare you a little. I felt *Birdman* was a comedy, a dark comedy, and this one was challenging like that."

He added, "Tom makes me laugh every single day. The range that I discovered working with Tom is unprecedented for me as a director. I was so f‑‑‑ing impressed and happy."

For the first time in the World Cup's history, 48 nations are competing in the tournament. They were divided into 12 groups of four, with co-hosts USA, Mexico and Canada all given top-seed status in the draw.

The 12 group winners and 12 runners-up will automatically go through to the round of 32, and they will be joined by the eight best third-placed finishers, based on points and goal difference at the end of the group stage.

Seven teams have booked their place in the knockout rounds after winning both of their opening matches. Five teams have so far been eliminated from the competition after losing both of their fixtures.

In total, 16 nations will go home after the group stage.

And here are the latest group stage standings:

The World Cup began in Mexico City's Azteca Stadium, the site of Diego Maradona's most famous and infamous goals against England at the 1986 World Cup.

It was also the venue for two classic World Cup finals: Brazil's win over Italy in 1970 which included Carlos Alberto's iconic team goal to cap a 4-1 win; and Argentina's 3-2 win over West Germany in 1986, where Jorge Burruchaga grabbed an 84th-minute winner.

Mexico and Canada will host 13 games in each, and the United States will host 78. From the quarter-finals onwards, the US will host all of the remaining matches, with the final at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium.

Over the course of its eight seasons, *The Vampire Diaries*' mythology changed every now and then to fit a certain story. But in its seventh season, the show delivered its biggest change from its established mythology when, suddenly, Caroline (Candice King) became pregnant via a magical transfer. Even though she was a vampire, she was somehow carrying Alaric (Matthew Davis) and Jo's (Jodi Lyn O'Keefe) twins.

The twist was something the writers thought up as a way to soften the tragedy at the end of season 6 when Kai (Chris Wood) killed Jo and her unborn children—on her wedding day, no less. "We had always left that [story thread] hanging on instinct," writer Neil Reynolds says during episode 7 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*.

Executive producer Julie Plec adds, "Because of the tragedy of the twins and Jo dying and looking for story for Alaric for the season, we had separately come up with the story of the woman who knocks on his door and is like, 'I think I'm pregnant with your babies.'" But the writers weren't sure if that twist was *too* crazy, so they didn't originally plan to go there. Until star Candice King called to let them know she was pregnant. "I was very nervous to make that call," King says on the podcast.

Ultimately, the writers decided to work in King's pregnancy and use the aforementioned story, only instead of a random woman showing up pregnant, Caroline would carry Ric's kids. Plec remembers warning CW president Mark Pedowitz about "the most bananas thing" she was ever going to pitch him at the time, but surprisingly, he wasn't fazed. And thus Caroline's pregnancy became part of the series and will always go down as one of the show's most unexpected turns.

The* Vampire Diaries* creators have talked a lot about the importance of a great villain for the series, and in its later seasons, there was one villain that stood out among the rest: Kai Parker (Chris Wood). Introduced in season 6, the sociopathic siphoner quickly became a favorite in the *TVD* fandom, and for Ian Somerhalder, whose Damon Salvatore was the series' first villain, Kai marked a significant shift for the show.

In episode 6 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*, Somerhalder recalls his hesitation about Damon becoming a good — or at least better — guy in the show's third season. "I was so upset about the trajectory of Damon," Somerhalder says. "So much so that at one point I was sitting across from [executive producer] Julie [Plec] in her office in Atlanta almost in tears so angry about this."

The Vampire Diaries

Plec, along with her co-creator Kevin Williamson, explained that Damon couldn't be what they called a "one trick pony," that he was going to be the villain at times and the hero at others. But that's precisely why Somerhalder says he was jealous of what Chris Wood got to do as Kai in season 6. "That's why I was always so in love with what Chris Wood was doing on screen, because up until that moment, there was never a character in the show, other than Stefan in the Ripper age, that actually had the ability to not be so serious, to do horrific things but do it with a smile," Somerhalder says.

As far as Wood's inspiration for Kai, Wood, who's also on the podcast, says, "We talked about Ted Bundy if he was really funny. It was the worst person in the world who's also like maybe a good hang if you can get him to shut up for a second. That was sort of what I was always going for."

For *The Vampire Diaries* creatives, casting Enzo was a particularly difficult task. Because originally, the role was going to be very different.

"You were supposed to be the third Salvatore brother," executive producer Julie Plec tells star Michael Malarkey in episode 8 of *EW's Binge: The Vampire Diaries*. Writer Brett Matthews adds, "That was always the plan, and then it went a different direction, but that's why it was so hard to find the person. We thought it was going to be a Salvatore brother, so we cast a very wide net [and] looked very hard." Ultimately, they scrapped that plan and made it so Enzo didn't share Salvatore blood, but he was a brother figure for Damon (Ian Somerhalder) for many years (and he was sired by Lily Salvatore).

But that wasn't the only plan that changed in the writers' room over the years. In discussing the *Vampire Diaries*' final season, Plec and Matthews recall the final major debate: Which Salvatore were they going to kill in the series finale? "We went back and forth in the writers' room all season long," Plec says. "We finally landed on: We're killing Damon. That's the right thing to do. He is the one with the consequence to pay. Stefan was morally a bit stronger of a character."

The Vampire Diaries

Matthews adds, "Damon's a fairly obvious choice," noting that the writers really fell in love with the idea of Damon compelling Stefan (Paul Wesley) to let him die. But when executive producer Kevin Williamson proposed that it should be Stefan that dies, they started to rethink their plan. "It felt like dying for Stefan freed him from a lot of weight, whereas it felt like living for Damon freed him to go and be the man that he was always supposed to be," Plec says.

Of course, both Salvatores were meant to die in the original ending Plec and Williamson came up with during the show's second season. In that ending, "The boys would sacrifice themselves to save Elena so that Elena could go and have a life and be human and live," Plec recalls during the podcast. "To save her, they would die together, and that was always the pitch. And then when Nina [Dobrev] left, it felt like the show can't be as much about protecting Elena's happiness, although that's important to us, but we want to protect the bothers' happiness, we want them to get something out of this. Then it shifted to: We can't kill both of them for her because that feels somehow like nobody got what they wanted. Let's find a different way to give one of these brothers the happiness that they need and the other brother the closure that they need."

(One other way Dobrev leaving changed the plan? Plec says, "I thought that by the time we came back to the end of the series, whenever it was, that Elena would've found her way back to Stefan and Damon would've found a different path.")
