Actress Tara Reid's claim that she was allegedly drugged at a hotel in the Chicago area is reportedly under question, according to Illinois police, based on the surveillance footage.

According to People and local station WFLD, the Rosemont Public Safety Department said on Wednesday, Dec. 3, that surveillance footage does not indicate Reid was drugged at the DoubleTree Chicago O'Hare Airport — Rosemont on Nov. 23.

Per People and footage of the incident that TMZ released on Wednesday, a hotel bartender covered her drink when the "American Pie" star left the bar. "While video surveillance showed Tara Reid at the hotel bar, at no time did video show anyone tampering with or adding something to her drink," police said in a statement.

Tara Reid at Yolanthe Cabau's "Free A Girl" screening at The London Hotel on July 19, 2025, in Los Angeles.

"We can confirm that a bartender covered her drink when she left the bar which is standard practice for bartenders to do," they added. USA TODAY has reached out to the Rosemont Public Safety Department for comment.

However, Reid's representative Jane Owen told USA TODAY in a statement on Wednesday evening that the "bottom line is no one ends up in the hospital incapacitated for over 8 hours after a drink."

Celebrities such as Selma Blair, Jada Pinkett Smith, Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber have embraced speaking out about ongoing health issues, encouraging fans to do the same. Tara Reid addresses claims that she was not drugged at hotel bar

"Last thing I remember is having one drink and waking up in the hospital the next day without remembering anything," Reid said in the statement. "That was the scariest feeling I have ever felt."

The department, per WFLD, said that while no criminal act has been committed as of now, officials are awaiting hospital records that could reveal chemical testing results. "While we do not have any evidence that a drink was tampered with, it is a good reminder to never leave a drink unattended," police told WFLD in a statement Wednesday. "If you ever believe you have been drugged or feel unsafe, please reach out to local authorities."

But the 50-year-old actress stands by her claim that she was drugged, an experience she called "horrifying," adding that she "felt so helpless."

"This has been a horrifying experience for me that is severely affecting my mental health," Reid continued. "I cannot sleep over this, it's a very scary feeling not knowing what happened to me. I believe I was drugged. Something happened to me."

What happened to Tara Reid at a Chicago hotel bar?

Reid filed a police report last month following the incident, and at the time, was "cooperating fully" with the authorities' investigation, her representative said in a statement to USA TODAY on Nov. 24.

Reid told TMZ she was hospitalized on Nov. 23 after falling unconscious during her stay at the hotel. The outlet shared footage of what appeared to be hotel security helping Reid into a wheelchair following the incident. While seemingly incoherent, she was placed on a stretcher as paramedics transferred her from the hotel.

She said she stepped outside to smoke a cigarette and returned to find her drink covered with a napkin that she hadn't used, which she removed and then drank.

Guitarist Steve Cropper, who left an indelible impression on Memphis soul music as an instrumentalist, producer and songwriter at Stax Records, has died, his son Cameron confirmed to Variety on Wednesday. He was 84.

Cropper was best known to the public for his distinctive, economical lead/rhythm work in the hit-making interracial instrumental combo Booker T. & the MG's, but his playing also fired dozens of tracks – some of which he produced or engineered — cut at Stax Records' studio by such soul greats as Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, Sam & Dave, Rufus and Carla Thomas and Eddie Floyd.

In 1996, British music monthly Mojo named him the second-greatest guitarist of all time, behind Jimi Hendrix. The publication said, "Cropper puts everything he's got, which is considerable, at the disposal of the artist and the song: metronome-crisp timing; deadly-accurate chops; earth-moving bottom-line riffs; sharp, nasty little licks and grace notes. His solos never outstay their welcome or leave you wanting less."

As a cleffer, he co-authored the MG's smashes "Green Onions," "Soul-Limbo" and "Time is Tight" and such mammoth R&B hits as Redding's "(Sittin' on) The Dock of the Bay" and "Mr. Pitiful," Pickett's "In the Midnight Hour" and "634-5789," Floyd's "Knock On Wood" and "Raise Your Hand" and Don Covay's "Seesaw" and "Sookie Sookie."

Though Cropper's association with Stax ended amid front-office conflicts in 1970, the MG's regrouped for further recording and touring from the '70s through the '90s, and backed such performers as Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, Neil Young and the Band's Levon Helm.

Cropper's highest-profile latter-day gig was as lead guitarist for John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd's musical act the Blues Brothers. The musician played on the duo's double-platinum 1978 album "Briefcase Full of Blues" and four other albums, and appeared in both John Landis' 1980 feature "The Blues Brothers" and its 1998 sequel "Blues Brothers 2000."

He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of the MG's in 1992.

Cropper was born Oct. 21, 1941, in Dora, MO. His family moved to Memphis when he was nine. He began playing guitar at 14; among his influences as a player, he cited Lowman Pauling of the R&B group the "5" Royales, Billy Butler of organist Bill Doggett's combo and Bobby "Blue" Bland's longtime accompanist Wayne Bennett.

In 1960, Cropper formed the white R&B unit the Royal Spades with several fellow students at Messick High School, including bassist Donald "Duck" Dunn. The group was soon joined by saxophonist Charles "Packy" Axton, whose mother and uncle, Estelle Axton and Jim Stewart, operated a fledgling record label, Satellite Records – soon renamed Stax – out of a storefront record shop adjoining an old movie house, converted into a recording studio, on McLemore Avenue.

An instrumental hammered out by Cropper, Axton and other Royal Spades members was recorded by the label's producer Chips Moman, who deemed a guitarist unnecessary for the date. However, after "Last Night," billed to the Mar-Keys, reached No. 2 and No. 3 on the R&B and pop charts, respectively, in 1961, Cropper joined the touring edition of the band. He soon abandoned the road to work at Stax's record store and studio.

A failed session backing local rockabilly artist Billy Lee Riley led to an epoch-making recording. With time on their hands, Cropper and the other players on the date – bassist Lewie Steinberg, drummer Al Jackson, Jr. and teenage multi-instrumentalist Booker T. Jones – worked up a swinging instrumental dominated by Jones' Hammond organ.

Dubbed "Green Onions," the number became a breakout national hit for Stax, climbing to No. 1 on the R&B charts and No. 3 on the pop side. It served as a template for a succession of similarly styled singles by the unit, dubbed Booker T. & the MG's (in which Cropper's high school chum Dunn supplanted Steinberg in 1964).

The act's most significant singles in their own right included "Hip Hug-Her" (No. 6 R&B, 1967), "Soul-Limbo" (No. 6 R&B, 1968), "Hang 'Em High" (No. 9 pop, 1968) and "Time is Tight" (No. 7 R&B, No. 6 pop, 1969); the latter number was cut for the soundtrack of "Up Tight," a Blaxploitation remake of "The Informer."

While the MG's issued a steady stream of 45s and albums through the '60s, they did their most significant work as Stax's house band; after Moman exited the company after a falling out with Stewart in 1962, Cropper was installed as the label's A&R director. The band backed every Stax act until Jones' departure for California in 1969, and supported Redding, Sam & Dave, Floyd and Arthur Conley on the label's celebrated 1967 package tour of Europe.

In 1969, near the end of his tenure at Stax, Cropper cut a pair of albums under his own name that focused on his guitar work: "With a Little Help From My Friends" and a collaboration with Pops Staples of the Staple Singers and bluesman Albert King, "Jammed Together."

Like Moman before him, Cropper exited Stax after conflict with the front office: At loggerheads with new chief executive Al Bell, he was out the door by the time the last MG's LP for the label, "Melting Pot," was issued in 1971. He increasingly devoted himself to production, working with such acts as John Prine, Jeff Beck and Ringo Starr.

Neither Cropper nor Jones was present on the 1973 album "The MG's," and a proposed 1975 reunion of the classic quartet lineup ran aground when Jackson was murdered in his Memphis home. However, latter-day editions of the group featuring Cropper, Jones and Dunn with drummers Willie Hall and Steve Jordan cut three albums in 1976-77 and 1994. Drummer Steve Potts worked in late touring editions of the group.

Cropper's greatest success in later years came as guitarist for the various spinoffs of Belushi and Aykroyd's hyperactive and tongue-in-cheek yet musically reverential Blues Brothers routines on "Saturday Night Live." Dunn served as bassist in the backup band.

The No. 1 album "Briefcase Full of Blues" spawned a No. 14 single: a remake of the 1967 Sam & Dave hit "Soul Man," on which Cropper and Dunn had played. The 1980 soundtrack album for the hit feature peaked at No. 13 and shifted a million copies; the gold album accompanying the '98 sequel rose to No. 12.

Later high-profile dates by the MG's included work as the backup band for Bob Dylan's 1992 "30th Anniversary Concert" at Madison Square Garden; a stint supporting Neil Young on his 1993 U.S. tour; and a house band stand at the opening of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's museum opening in 1995.

Cropper's four solo albums of the new millennium included "Dedicated" (2011), a warmly received tribute to "5" Royales guitarist-songwriter Pauling.

He is survived by his second wife Angel and their two children, and by two children from his first marriage.

Taylor Swift might appear often during televised Chiefs games, but inside the stadium, it's a different story.

According to Chiefs president Mark Donovan, the organization avoids showing Swift on the Jumbotron as she cheers on her fiancé, Travis Kelce.

Donovan said it's out of respect for the couple, emphasizing that he doesn't want to "monetize" their relationship.

Taylor Swift's attendance at Kansas City Chiefs games has become one of the NFL's most popular cutaway shots on television. She's been seen in a suite at Arrowhead Stadium, cheering on fiancé Travis Kelce, celebrating touchdowns with her friends, and wearing Chiefs merch. But for fans who are actually inside the stadium, glimpses of Swift on the Jumbotron are much rarer.

That's an intentional choice, according to Chiefs president Mark Donovan. In a December 1 appearance on Kay Adams's Up & Adams podcast, he explained that the organization agreed on a boundary when Swift and Kelce's relationship became public. "My job early on in this was—and I told Travis this—like, look, we're gonna treat you and your relationship with the same respect that we treat any other player and coach's relationship," he said. "It's a relationship. Like, we're not gonna monetize it, we're not gonna go out there and go crazy."

Donovan noted that while national broadcasts frequently show Swift, the organization avoided featuring her inside the stadium. "All those shots you see of Taylor in the stadium—[Kelce] scores a touchdown, he makes a catch—it goes to Taylor, especially in the first year," he said, referring to the television close-ups of Swift when the couple's romance became public. But, he continued, "We never showed Taylor on our big boards in our stadium. Never. It was respectful. It's like, we're not gonna do that. We're not taking advantage of this relationship."

He revealed that the stadium also doesn't play Swift's songs as it would feel "awkward" for Kelce. "Travis, to his credit, is all about [the] team, and he's all about the guys, and he's all about being a part of a team and not being separate," Donovan said, adding that Kelce's mindset is, "When we're playing a game, when we're in that stadium, it's about us, and I want it to be about us."

Donovan gave Swift credit, saying the organization's experience with her has been "nothing but good," describing her as "a special, kind person."

In her 2023 Person of the Year profile for Time Magazine, Swift opened up about the unpredictability of game-day cameras. "I don't know how they know what suite I'm in," she told the publication. "There's a camera, like, a half-mile away, and you don't know where it is, and you have no idea when the camera is putting you in the broadcast, so I don't know if I'm being shown 17 times or once." She added, "I'm just there to support Travis. I have no awareness of if I'm being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads."

Fans will get a glimpse of Swift and Kelce's relationship in The End of an Era, a Disney+ docuseries showcasing Swift's behind-the-scenes journey during her record-breaking Eras Tour. In the trailer, Swift is seen wearing Chiefs merch and watching one of Kelce's games while on the road. Kelce also makes a few cameos in the teaser as he shares a kiss with Swift and practices for his 2024 stage debut during the Eras Tour show at London's Wembley Stadium.

There are so many different ways you can fall in love, and romantic comedies serve to remind us of that. Maybe you're dreaming of an unexpected romance, like in *Hit Man*. You could also be looking for a plot with strong female leads, such as *The Incredible Jessica James* or *Someone Great*. Whatever kind of love story you're in the mood for, you'll find your perfect match on our list of the best romantic comedies currently streaming on Netflix, as of December 2025.

Oh, what a tangled web we weave. William Shakespeare's *The Taming of the Shrew* receives a modern-day makeover in this beloved teen rom-com, set in a Seattle high school. The film begins with new student Cameron (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) falling for sophomore Bianca (Larisa Oleynik), but there's only one problem: Her father won't allow her to date until her independent older sister, Kat (Julia Stiles), finds a beau. He does some matchmaking that leads to bad boy Patrick (Heath Ledger) trying to woo Kat, but this proves more difficult than expected.

EW's critic was highly positive on *10 Things I Hate About You* upon its release, praising how it "casts an amusingly jaundiced eye on the unholy status games of contemporary teen culture." —*Kevin Jacobsen*

Alex Strangelove (2018)

Daniel Doheny as Alex Truelove and Antonio Marziale as Elliot in 'Alex Strangelove'

A coming-of-age rom-com that sees a popular teen wrestle with his sexuality may sound like a familiar narrative, but *Alex Strangelove* adds its own spin. Alex Truelove (Daniel Doheny) lives in an especially progressive and supportive environment for a high school tale, nearly void of the common prejudices against queerness. Still, Alex doesn't know what — or who — he wants, and he has to learn about himself before he can know for sure.

Many LGBTQ+ rom-coms tend to focus on protagonists that are working against societal biases, but *Alex Strangelove* offers a more joyful take on the queer experience. EW's critic praises the film's underlying theme beneath its (occasionally cringey) twist and turns, writing, "It's hard to fault the bigger message here: that we all deserve the right to be true to who we are, even if it takes a few hard turns — and some collateral emotional damage — to get there." —*Angela Andaloro*

Along for the Ride (2022)

Belmont Cameli as Eli and Emma Pasarow as Auden in 'Along for the Ride'

Belmont Cameli as Eli and Emma Pasarow as Auden in 'Along for the Ride'. Emily V. Aragones/Netflix

Based on the novel by Sarah Dessen, night owl Auden (Emma Pasarow) displeases her type-A mom (Andie MacDowell) by going to stay with her absentee dad (Dermot Mulroney), his wife (Kate Bosworth), and their newborn over the summer before college. Now on a mission to taste all the teenage experiences she's missed out on, Auden soon makes her first real group of girlfriends and roams the beach town in the wee hours of the morning. Doing so brings her to meet another night-type, Eli (Belmont Cameli), who has a repressed past of his own.

Sofia Alvarez is no stranger to teen rom-coms, given that she adapted *To All the Boys I've Loved Before* into the hit Netflix film franchise. Now, she's made her feature-length directorial debut with* Along for the Ride*, having collaborated with Dessen, queen of the beach read, on this quintessential summer romance film. "I have always really loved those nostalgic summertime movies that I grew up watching, and I think I immediately saw the potential for this movie to be one of those," Alvarez told EW. "I really wanted it to be the kind of summer movie where you smell the sunscreen through the screen...or it has a soundtrack that everyone is singing in their cars this summer when they're driving to the beach." Spoiler alert: This movie (and its soundtrack by Beach House) achieves all of that and more. —*A.A.*

Always Be My Maybe (2019)

Ali Wong as Sasha Tran and Randall Park as Marcus Kim in 'Always Be My Maybe'

Ali Wong as Sasha Tran and Randall Park as Marcus Kim in 'Always Be My Maybe'. Ed Araquel/Netflix

Who says you can't go home again? Ali Wong shines in this romantic comedy about childhood best friends who cross paths as adults after an awkward teenage romance ended badly. Fast forward 16 years, and life has taken celebrity chef Sasha Tran (Wong) and unsuccessful musician Marcus Kim (Randall Park) to some very different places. Much has changed, but their chemistry sure hasn't as the two come face-to-face with their many differences on the road to reconciliation.

Costars Wong and Park are also co-writers for the film, and, given the hilarity of Wong's Netflix stand-up specials, it's no wonder *Always Be My Maybe* was an instant hit. The central lovebirds have a lot of healing to do from their complicated youths before they can live happily ever after, but the laughter makes it that much sweeter. Throw in a disastrous double date featuring Keanu Reeves playing, well, Keanu Reeves, and you've got yourself a chaotic love triangle unlike any you've seen before. EW's critic highlights the film's graceful lack of tokenism as well: "*Always Be My Maybe *… joins a burgeoning if still too small club of mainstream movies centered without any special pomp or circumstance on Asian American characters." Seriously, what's not to love? —*A.A.*

Where to watch *Always Be My Maybe*: Netflix

**EW grade: **B

**Director: **Nahnatchka Khan

As Good as It Gets (1997)

Jack Nicholson as Melvin Udall and Helen Hunt as Carol Connelly in 'As Good as It Gets'

Sony Pictures/Courtesy Everett Collection

This delightfully spiky rom-com from the great James L. Brooks (*Terms of Endearment*, *Broadcast News*) centers on flawed people who come together nonetheless. Jack Nicholson plays Melvin, a cynical novelist who strikes up a connection with a local waitress, Carol (Helen Hunt), with whom he embarks on an unlikely romance. As with many comedies of the '90s, not every element has aged well, but there's an old-fashioned charm to Brooks' writing and directing that sneaks up on you. —*K.J.*

Sanja Bucko/Warner Bros.

With its winning formula of a charismatic cast, familiar tropes, and lavish production design, it's no wonder *Crazy Rich Asians* became the highest-grossing rom-com of the 2010s. Constance Wu stars as Rachel, a New Yorker whose boyfriend (Henry Golding) reveals to her on their flight to Singapore to meet his family that he comes from an obscenely wealthy dynasty. EW's critic calls *Crazy Rich Asians* "a deliriously glossy, globe-trotting trifle — two hours of romantic fantasy and real-estate porn poured on so thick it's almost lickable." We're still waiting on the sequel! —*K.J.*

Groundhog Day (1993)

Bill Murray as Phil Connors in 'Groundhog Day'

Bill Murray as Phil Connors in 'Groundhog Day'. Everett Collection

Groundhog Day has become virtually synonymous with this romantic time loop comedy as much as Punxsutawney Phil himself. Popularizing the concept of an endless repeated day for numerous films to come, *Groundhog Day* centers on jaded TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray), who finds himself trapped in Punxsutawney, Pa., waking up over and over again on Feb. 2. Only Phil is aware of the time loop, causing him to behave in a variety of ways, from taking advantage of his circumstances to get what he wants to falling into existential despair. Time has been kind to *Groundhog Day* since its 1993 release, especially in how it blends laughs with moments of philosophical insight. —*K.J.*

The Half of It (2020)

Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu and Alexxis Lemire as Aster Flores in 'The Half of It'

Leah Lewis as Ellie Chu and Alexxis Lemire as Aster Flores in 'The Half of It'. KC Bailey/Netflix

In a modern retelling of the classic French play *Cyrano de Bergerac*, Ellie (Leah Lewis) starts ghostwriting love letters for a jock, Paul (Daniel Diemer), in exchange for some much-needed cash. But as she continues to correspond with Paul's dream girl, Aster (Alexxis Lemire), Ellie finds they have a lot in common and wonders if she's actually her better half. Though the romantic tension between the unknowing Aster and the unfortunate Ellie pushes the film forward, the true heart of this story is the blossoming friendship between Ellie and Paul. He may not be able to write to save his life, but Paul speaks up where it counts, causing an intimate and (somewhat) overlapping love triangle between teens who are just trying to learn what life is all about.

The characters' bond is rooted in Lewis and Diemer's genuine affection, too. "Daniel is like my brother now," Lewis told EW. "His belief in me as Daniel definitely translated onscreen where Ellie finds the courage to perform because of Paul's belief in [her]." —*A.A.*

Where to watch *The Half of It*: Netflix

**EW grade: **B

**Director: **Alice Wu

**Cast: **Leah Lewis, Daniel Diemer, Alexxis Lemire, Enrique Murciano, Wolfgang Novogratz, Catherine Curtin, Becky Ann Baker, Collin Chou

Talk about an unconventional meet-cute. Glen Powell co-wrote and stars in this darkly comedic romantic thriller as Gary Johnson, a mild-mannered college professor who also works with the police posing as a hitman to bust murder-for-hire clients. He proves adept at his undercover job, but, after a woman named Madison (Adria Arjona) hires Gary to kill her husband, he soon finds himself developing feelings, which complicates matters. Powell delivers his best performance to date as the chameleonic faux-assassin, and his chemistry with Arjona is off-the-charts charming. —*K.J.*

Michael Gibson/Paramount

Entering a relationship with ulterior motives can only end in ruin, so what happens when both partners have a secret plan up their sleeves? Such is the premise for *How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days*, in which advertising executive Ben (Matthew McConaughey) takes a bet that he can get a woman to fall in love with him in only 10 days, while magazine writer Andie (Kate Hudson) hopes to write an article about getting a man to break up with her in the same amount of time. Naturally, they are set up with each other, and chaos ensues.

While receiving mixed reviews from critics, the film is certainly representative of the rom-com genre in the early-2000s, largely holding up due to the chemistry between McConaughey and Hudson. The pair reunited in February 2023 to discuss why they worked so well together, with McConaughey telling Hudson, "What tickles me doesn't bruise you; what tickles you doesn't bruise me. We were never afraid to push it to what might be considered too far." *—K.J.*

The Incredible Jessica James (2017)

Chris O'Dowd as Boone and Jessica Williams as Jessica James in 'The Incredible Jessica James'

Chris O'Dowd as Boone and Jessica Williams as Jessica James in 'The Incredible Jessica James'. Netflix

Jessica Williams (*2 Dope Queens*, *Shrinking*) is a relatable force to be reckoned with in her debut lead role. As the uber-confident Jessica James, she's trying to find out what's next in both her work life and her love life, with New York City as the backdrop. However, a blind date throws a wrench in all her plans as she finds herself unexpectedly falling for Boone (Chris O'Dowd) though she's still not quite over her ex, Damon (LaKeith Stanfield).

While the love story at the center of *The Incredible Jessica James* may seem a little trope-y and basic at times, the protagonist is anything but that. Jessica is a joyful, empowered character who faces her mistakes head-on without beating herself up about them. EW's critic celebrates the rom-com for its not-so-delicate balance, writing, "Even when the film falls into indie clichés, Williams keeps things moving with her cleverness and charisma, whether she's chastising man-spreaders on the subway or introducing an as-yet-unborn baby to the fight to dismantle the patriarchy." —*A.A.*

Judd Apatow perfected the gross-out rom-com with *Knocked Up*. Eight weeks after a one-night stand, driven reporter Alison (Katherine Heigl) realizes she's pregnant with slacker Ben's (Seth Rogen) baby. Despite having little in common, the pair tries to commit to a relationship with each other, but this proves far more difficult than expected. While the overarching plot plays on classic odd-couple tropes, much of the best humor in the film can be found in the eccentric observations from Ben and his roommates. EW's critic writes, "*Knocked Up* is the very opposite of a storybook romance, and also the very model of a great comedy for our values-driven time." —*K.J.*

The relationship between Leilani (Issa Rae) and Jibran (Kumail Nanjiani) is on its last legs and fading fast when the struggling couple is invited to a dinner party. On their way there, a chance encounter with a criminal changes the course of their night — and their separation. If they want to make it out alive and clear their names, the two will have to work together, but not without throwing a few passive-aggressive jabs at each other in the process.

*The Lovebirds* gives viewers a different kind of second-chance romance. It's light on the romance and heavy on the antics, making it an honest portrayal of all that can make or break a relationship — romantic or not. Still, the chemistry between Rae and Nanjiani eliminates any question of their potential as a couple. They bicker in that comfortable, weathered way that shows strain, but that edge may be just what they need to see their situation to the other side. And confronting it all is just as challenging as solving the murder they witnessed. EW's critic notes, "What feels freshest, maybe, is the mere fact of two leads of color taking on all the tropes of the genre and making it feel as modern as they do." —*A.A.*

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie star as John and Jane Smith, a couple whose marriage is on shaky ground. They also happen to both be skilled assassins, though neither is aware of the other's occupation. This all changes when they're both assigned to kill the same target, which complicates everything to the point that they're soon tasked with killing each other. Hijinks ensue, and the film is propelled by the undeniable chemistry between Pitt and Jolie, who EW's critic writes have a "chemical zing." Thus, Brangelina was born. —*K.J.*

Set It Up (2018)

Zoey Deutch as Harper Moore and Glen Powell as Charlie Young in 'Set It Up'

Overworked assistants Charlie (Glen Powell) and Harper (Zoey Deutch) have a corporate meet-cute in their shared office building when they bond over their demanding, miserable bosses: venture capitalist Rick Otis (Taye Diggs) and sports media maven Kirsten Stevens (Lucy Liu). Desperate to make their jobs (and lives) easier, Charlie and Harper hatch a plan to merge their superiors into a happy power couple. But playing matchmaker might be way above their pay grade.

A romantic comedy in the same vein as *The Devil Wears Prada* (2006), this film has its fair share of gaslighting, but the twist is its good intentions. Charlie and Harper feel genuine admiration for their successful bosses, and though their motives are self-serving, it's all in the name of love, right? What follows is a satisfying take on the feel-good genre, complete with meditations on work lives, love lives, and everything in between. EW's critic hails *Set It Up* as the "gold standard for the frothy summer rom-com," and she was right on the money. —*A.A.*

Spike Lee exploded onto the scene with his 1986 directorial debut. Made for only $175,000, *She's Gotta Have It* tells the story of Nola (Tracy Camilla Johns), a graphic artist in Brooklyn who juggles relationships with three men, each with their own distinct personality. The situation becomes complicated after the men meet and figure out what's happening. Meanwhile, Nola comes to realize the value of her freedom as a sexually liberated person. Lauded for its depiction of a confident Black woman at a time when Hollywood rarely centered such characters, *She's Gotta Have It* proved to be predictive of the kinds of groundbreaking stories Lee would tell in the decades to come. The Oscar-winning filmmaker also adapted the film into a Netflix series in 2017. —*K.J.***** Where to watch *She's Gotta Have It*: Netflix******Director:** Spike Lee******Cast:** Tracy Camilla Johns, Tommy Redmond Hicks, John Canada Terrell, Spike Lee, Raye Dowell**

Someone Great (2019)

DeWanda Wise as Erin Kennedy, Gina Rodriguez as Jenny Young, and Brittany Snow as Blair Helms in 'Someone Great'

DeWanda Wise as Erin Kennedy, Gina Rodriguez as Jenny Young, and Brittany Snow as Blair Helms in 'Someone Great'. Netflix

This charming directorial debut by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson proves that break-up movies can make for great rom-coms. Jenny (Gina Rodriguez) lands her dream job at *Rolling Stone*, but it costs her her longtime boyfriend (LaKeith Stanfield). Desperate for a last hurrah in New York City before her big move, the new bachelorette rallies friends Blair (Brittany Snow) and Erin (DeWanda Wise) to help send her off, though it proves to be anything but a clean break.

The misadventures of their big night out inspire each woman to reflect on whether they've been choosing their relationships over themselves. The result is an empowering, modern spin on what's expected from the genre, placing sisterhood and self-love at the center stage. Ever the rom-com expert, EW's critic heralds *Something Great* as "... a newer breed of movie: the scrappy female-POV in which the love story at the center is as much about friendship or the face in the mirror as it is about any one man." —*A.A.*

Noah Centineo as Peter Kavinsky and Lana Condor as Lara Jean Song-Covey in 'To All the Boys I've Loved Before'. Netflix

One of the better teen rom-coms for the modern age, *To All the Boys I've Loved Before* was a smashing success for Netflix upon its 2018 release. Lana Condor plays Lara Jean Covey, a high schooler who secretly pens love letters to crushes but never sends them. Her younger sister finds them stashed away and decides to mail them herself, leading to a fair share of awkward situations. To prevent her current crush from initiating yet another cringey confrontation, she impulsively kisses one of her former crushes (Noah Centineo), which proves to be the catalyst for an ever-evolving relationship.

*To All the Boys I've Loved Before* was very well-received, with EW's critic calling it "breezy and charming." Netflix released two sequels to the film: *To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You* in 2020 and *To All the Boys: Always and Forever* in 2021, though the original remains the series' best entry. —*K.J.*

NAPERVILLE, ILLINOIS — Brian Scott didn't think he'd be creating a Christmas House (Taylor's Version) for a third year.

After all, the dad and small business owner had already devoted two straight holiday seasons — and hundreds of hours — to transforming his suburban home into a full-blown Taylor Swift spectacle.

But on Nov. 28, as he fielded an order for 9,000 Christmas cards for his printing business, Scott and his wife, Amy, found themselves right back where they swore they wouldn't be: scrambling to finish another spectacular Swift-inspired display before the neighborhood trolley tour arrived at sundown.

For the Scotts, now legends in Chicago's western suburbs, the Christmas chaos has practically become tradition. What started in 2023 as a whimsical idea after Amy Scott saw the Eras Tour movie has evolved into an annual, all-hands-on-deck project involving Brian, Amy and their daughters, Becca and Emily.

"End of an era, that's what we're calling it," Brian joked as he aligned six boxes stacked like a pyramid with scenes from Swift's music video "The Fate of Ophelia."

This year's display may be their most ambitious yet. Over the past two seasons, the family has recreated seven of Swift's albums across their yard: "Speak Now," "Red," "1989" and "Evermore" in 2023, and "Folklore," "Reputation" and "The Tortured Poets Department" in 2024. They built a moss-covered cottage out of a neighbor's discarded bed frame and turned pickle jar lids into typewriter keys.

And now they've added three more eras: "Lover," "Midnights" and "The Life of a Showgirl."

"We never did 'Midnights,' and it's one of our favorites," Bryan said. "And we never did 'Lover,' which is also one of our favorites. And then the new 'Life of a Showgirl.'"

Some constant themes include featuring Swift's fiancé, Travis Kelce, on the roof. In 2023, he was dressed as a Kansas City Chiefs tight end. In 2024, he was dressed in his Eras Tour tuxedo. This year, he's down on one knee, signifying his proposal to the singer.

Amy calls this year's work her "favorite so far." Their daughter Becca has been helping assemble a light display meant to look like "Midnight Rain" cascading down a larger than life arch. A neon sign reads "Meet me at midnight."

All for a good cause, donate to 'Little Friends'

The Scotts' house goes viral every winter, drawing Swifties from across Illinois and beyond. In 2023, Google Maps even changed the home's label to "Swiftmas House." Fans gather to take photos, marvel at the lyrical signs from the different eras and exchange friendship bracelets.

The family uses the attention to direct visitors toward a fundraiser for Little Friends, a nonprofit supporting people with autism and developmental disabilities. QR codes scattered across the yard lead guests to donate.

Every year the Scott family Naperville, Illinois, includes QR codes pointing visitors to donate to Little Friends, an organization that provides services for loved ones with autism or developmental disabilities.

Still, the Scotts keep their hopes modest, hoping Swift will find the displays enchanting.

"Hopefully, she doesn't think it's creepy," Becca said. "I just imagine if someone made an entire house of me."

The visitors who come in shimmering droves each year say the superstar would be impressed.

"I think she would love it," Christie Eustace said. "We've actually come the last three years. Just a Taylor Swift fan and wanted to see what they had this year."
