WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) - The Trump administration on Wednesday will propose a significant rollback of fuel economy standards that former President Joe Biden had finalized last year, in its latest push to make it easier for automakers to sell gasoline-powered cars, automakers and sources told Reuters.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is set to ‌propose significantly reducing the fuel economy requirements from model years 2022 to 2031. It will also make drastic changes to the program including eliminating credit trading among ‌automakers and will end some credits for fuel-saving features, the sources said.

President Donald Trump will be joined by the CEOs of Chrysler parent Stellantis and Ford Motor to unveil the proposal at 2:30 p.m. EST (1930 GMT).

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed the plan, saying on social media that the administration will propose a "reset of federal fuel standards."

Earlier this year, Trump signed legislation that ended fuel economy penalties for automakers, ⁠and NHTSA said they faced no fines ‌dating back to the 2022 model year.

Ending credit trading could hurt automakers like EV manufacturers Tesla and Rivian, which have sold credits to rivals making gas-powered models.

Ford CEO Jim Farley praised Trump, in a statement ‍ahead of the event, for "aligning fuel economy standards with market realities. We can make real progress on carbon emissions and energy efficiency while still giving customers choice and affordability."

GM CEO Mary Barra noted on Tuesday at an event that before Congress blocked California's zero-emission vehicle rules in June, the auto sector was facing requirements in some states that 35% of new vehicles sold in 2026 must be EVs.

"We were going ‌to have to start shutting down plants because we weren't going to be able to build and sell those vehicles," Barra said.

In June 2024, during the Biden administration, NHTSA hiked Corporate Average Fuel Economy requirements to about 50.4 miles per gallon (21.4 km per liter) by 2031, from the 39.1 mpg for light-duty vehicles last year. That rule did not increase requirements for light trucks for 2027 and 2028 and required 2% increases from 2029 to 2031.

In 2022 under Biden, NHTSA increased fuel efficiency by 8% annually for model years ⁠2024-2025 and 10% for 2026.

The agency last year said passenger cars and truck rule would reduce gasoline consumption by 64 billion gallons and cut emissions by 659 million metric tons, reducing fuel costs with net benefits estimated at $35.2 billion for drivers.

The 2022 rule was estimated to reduce fuel use by more than 200 billion gallons through 2050.

Kathy Harris, director of clean ‍vehicles at environmental nonprofit the Natural ⁠Resources Defense Council, said, "the Trump administration is sticking drivers with higher costs at the pump, all to benefit the oil industry ... Drivers will be paying hundreds of dollars more at the pump every year if these rules are put in ⁠place."

Trump has taken a series of steps to make it easier to sell gas-powered vehicles and disincentivize EV production, including rescinding EV tax credits and barring ‌California from banning the sale of traditional gas-powered vehicles after 2035.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Republican-led House Judiciary Committee has subpoenaed former Justice Department special counsel Jack Smith for a closed-door interview later this month even though he had earlier volunteered to appear for an open hearing about his prosecutions of President Donald Trump.

Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio, the committee's Republican chairman, directed Smith in a letter dated Wednesday to appear for a private deposition on Dec. 17 as part of the panel's investigations into the prosecutor's work.

"Due to your service as Special Counsel, the Committee believes that you possess information that is vital to its oversight of this matter," Jordan wrote. He also asked Smith to produce records to the committee in addition to his testimony.

A lawyer for Smith, Peter Koski, said in a statement that Smith had offered nearly six weeks ago to appear before the committee in an open hearing but would nonetheless appear as requested for the deposition.

"We are disappointed that offer was rejected, and that the American people will be denied the opportunity to hear directly from Jack on these topics," Koski said. "Jack looks forward to meeting with the committee later this month to discuss his work and clarify the various misconceptions about his investigation."

Smith was appointed in 2022 to oversee the Justice Department investigations into Trump's efforts to overturn his 2020 presidential election loss and his hoarding of classified documents at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Smith's team filed charges in both investigations.

Smith abandoned the cases after Trump was elected to the White House again last year, citing Justice Department legal opinions that prohibit the indictment of a sitting president.

Republicans who control Congress have sought interviews with members of Smith's team and in recent weeks have seized on revelations that the team, as part of its investigation, had analyzed the phone records of select GOP lawmakers from on and around Jan. 6, 2021, when pro-Trump rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol to try to halt the certification of the Republican president's election loss to Democrat Joe Biden.

Smith's legal team has noted that the records that investigators obtained did not include the contents of the conversations but instead merely captured incoming and outgoing call numbers, the times the calls were placed and how long they lasted.

"Mr. Smith's actions as Special Counsel were consistent with the decisions of a prosecutor who has devoted his career to following the facts and the law, without fear or favor and without regard for the political consequences," Smith's lawyers wrote to lawmakers in October.

"His investigative decisions were similarly motivated, and the subpoena for toll records was entirely proper, lawful, and consistent with established Department of Justice policy. While Mr. Smith's prosecutions of President Trump have predictably been politicized by others, politics never influenced his decision making," they added.

New images and video footage of the private island where Jeffrey Epstein carried out much of his abuse were released on Wednesday by the House Oversight Committee.

Among the 10 never-before-seen images, taken by U.S. Virgin Island authorities, are photographs of a room with a dentist's chair surrounded by masks, a bedroom, and several other living spaces.

One photograph shows a library with four armchairs facing each other and a blackboard in the background. The words "truth," "music," "deception," "power," "fin," "phy," "intellectual," and "political" are scribbled on the blackboard, while other words appear to be redacted.

"These new images are a disturbing look into the world of Jeffrey Epstein and his island," Rep. Robert Garcia, Democratic ranking member on the committee, said in a press release. "We are releasing these photos and videos to ensure public transparency in our investigation and to help piece together the full picture of Epstein's horrific crimes. We won't stop fighting until we deliver justice for the survivors."

Epstein owned Little St. James and Great St. James, two private islands in the U.S. Virgin Islands. A number of Epstein survivors say they were trafficked to Little St. James, where he lived for the better part of two decades, and suffered abuse on the island.

Virginia Giuffre, one of Epstein's most prominent victims, wrote in her posthumous memoir of being trafficked to one of the islands when she was 18, where she was subjected to a particularly violent rape at the hands of an unnamed former Prime Minister.

The convicted sex trafficker also used the island to entertain wealthy and powerful friends, although there is no suggestion that visitors there participated in any wrongdoing.

The photographs and video offer a look behind the scenes of Epstein's lavish island home for the first time.

A video walkthrough shows an expansive view of the ocean and palm trees, before the camera pans to show a swimming pool and a large statue of an archer. Another photo released by the committee shows a landline telephone with names written next to speed-dial buttons—among them Darren, Rich, Mike, Patrick and Larry. Some names were redacted.

The move appears to be the latest effort by Democrats on the Oversight Committee to pressure the Justice Department to release the Epstein files, coming two weeks after President Donald Trump signed a law requiring it.

The Justice Department has until Dec. 19 to release the files—30 days from the enactment of the law, but it has shared little about how it intends to comply with the law, and the legislation contains exceptions that give Attorney General Pam Bondi considerable latitude to withhold material.

A group of bipartisan lawmakers requested an update from Bondi on Wednesday, hoping to avoid any delays to the release of the files.

"In light of the short 30 day deadline to release the Epstein Files, we are particularly focused on understanding the contents of any new evidence, information or procedural hurdles that could interfere with the Department's ability to meet this statutory deadline," the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Bondi dated Wednesday, NBC News reported.

PARIS, Dec 3 (Reuters) - Charles Norman Shay, a Native American veteran who was a 19-year-old U.S. Army medic when he landed off the Normandy coast on D-Day and helped save lives, died ‌at age 101 on Wednesday.

Shay died at his home near Caen in France's Normandy region, ‌his carer Marie-Pascale Legrand said.

Born on June 27, 1924, on the Penobscot Indian Island Reservation in Maine, Shay was among some 500 Native Americans who took part in the June 6, 1944 landings.

The assault marked a decisive stage ⁠in the liberation of Europe ‌from German forces in World War Two.

As a U.S. Army medic, he ran across the beach dozens of times, ‍dragging men out of the surf and patching up their wounds under heavy fire — actions for which he was awarded a Silver Star, three Bronze Stars, and France's Legion d'Honneur.

He moved to Normandy in 2017 and became a familiar ‌figure at annual commemorations, insisting he was no hero, only a soldier who did his duty. "We lost many men," he recalled in a 2019 interview marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day. "I had to blank it all off so I could concentrate on my mission."

"Normandy lost today one of its ⁠heroes and a keeper of memory," the Normandy Region said on X.

In later years, Shay worked for recognition of the role played by Native Americans during the war. His efforts bore fruit when a memorial ‍was erected to ⁠the Native Americans who fought on Omaha Beach at Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer. In Native folklore they are known as the boys from Turtle Island, so ⁠it features a large granite turtle.

Shay will be buried there, near the sands where ‌history changed course, local French media said.

Celebrate the 8 Nights of Hanukkah With 8 Great Flicks

December 14 marks the first night of Hanukkah, and that means eight days of celebration. After you light the menorah, polish off a few latkes, and put away the dreidel, it's time to wind down with a movie that celebrates the season.

It wasn't too difficult to narrow down the list to the best eight because, sadly, there isn't a ton to choose from. Calling all screenwriters: There is a definite lack of Hanukkah movies on the market (although it's been argued that this may be because Hanukkah is not the most important holiday in the Jewish faith), so if you've got a great idea, there's definitely an opening. While you wait for the next great Hanukkah movie to be written, we've rounded up 10 of our favorites — one for each night of the holiday and beyond.

Best Hanukkah Movies and Where to Watch ThemSwitchmas (Amazon Prime)

Any movie starring Elliott Gould is a movie we want to see, and Switchmas is no exception. As the trailer states, Ira J. Finkelstein is obsessed with Christmas. When his family decides to send him to visit his grandparents in Florida over Christmas, Ira is devastated, telling his parents, "Florida is the opposite of Christmas!" So when he meets an equally miserable little boy who is bound for a visit to his cousins in a place called "Christmastown," the boys decide to switch plane tickets. As expected, each boy realizes that in the end, there's no place like home.

Eight Crazy Nights (Amazon Prime, Paramount+)

After Adam Sandler's "Hanukkah Song" became the stuff of SNL legend, it only made sense that the comedian would make a Hanukkah movie. And thus, Eight Crazy Nights was born. In this animated musical film, Davey is the town party boy who gets into trouble with the law one too many times. The judge gives him an ultimatum: either perform community service with the youth basketball league or go to jail. That's how Davey meets Whitey Duvall, an eccentric, elderly volunteer referee with a heart of gold who is determined to turn Davey into a good guy. The film came out in 2002 and some of the less politically correct content hasn't exactly aged well, but if you can look past some of the more cringe-worthy scenes, this film has a lot of heart. Even though it's animated, this is one where we definitely suggest putting the kiddos to bed before watching.

Full-Court Miracle (Disney Plus)

In 2003, The Disney Channel was still gifting us with weekly original movies, and life was good. One of these movies was Full-Court Miracle, and almost 20 years later it's still a must-watch for Hanukkah. In the film, a star basketball player named Lamont is forced out of the game after a knee injury. In a twist of fate, he meets a young Jewish boy named Alex, who loves basketball and plays for his Yeshiva team. The only problem is that the team is absolutely awful. Alex persuades Lamont to be their coach, and the struggling team's fortunes start to turn around.

Hitched For The Holidays (Pluto TV, Hallmark+)

Schitt's Creek's Emily Hampshire stars alongside '90s heartthrob Joey Lawrence in this holiday rom-com that's as sweet as gelt. Lawrence plays a commitment-phobe from a big Italian Catholic family, and Hampshire's character comes from a close-knit Jewish family and has recently broken off an engagement. Both of them are under a lot of pressure from their families to get into a relationship, so after meeting on a dating website, they hatch a plan to pretend to be each other's significant others to keep their families off their cases for the holidays. We bet you can guess what happens from here…let's just say the shammash isn't the only thing that's going to melt in the end.

An American Tail (Amazon Prime)

This animated treasure from 1986 still holds up as one of the best family-friendly Hanukkah movies available, even though it's not exactly a holiday film. It tells the story of an adorable little animated mouse named Fievel Mousekewitz and his journey to emigrate from Russia to the United States. During their travels, poor little Fievel gets separated from his family and must find a way to reunite with them. If you've never heard of this movie, watch the short trailer and try not to well up, we dare you. When the film was released, it was a box-office hit and became the highest-grossing non-Disney animated film at the time. 35 years later, we think it's high time for another Fievel movie to hit theaters!

The Holiday (Amazon Prime)

A Nancy Meyers Christmas movie with a Jewish main character and a dash of Hanukkah? We could watch this one eight nights in a row! In the film, a woman from England and another from California who are both unlucky in love (played by Kate Winslet and Cameron Diaz, respectively) decide to switch homes for the holidays. When Winslet's character hosts a Hanukkah party for her elderly neighbor, her new love interest, played by Jack Black, shows up. He proclaims it "the best Hanukkah party I've ever been to," which we'll take as a ringing endorsement!

The Night Before (Tubi, Amazon Prime)

Any movie starring Seth Rogen, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Anthony Mackie is bound to be a wild ride, and The Night Before lives up to expectations. In the film, the actors play "three dudes, three bros, three ride-or-die homies" who always spend Christmas Eve together. This year though, Rogen's character is about to be a father, and the pals realize it might be their last crazy night together. So, of course, they decide to go big, and make it their mission to knock off as many holiday traditions as possible…all while under the influence of a bevy of substances. Needless to say, this one is probably best for adults only.

Mistletoe & Menorahs (Pluto TV)

As the title implies, this holiday movie is about two people bridging the gap between Christmas and Hanukkah. Christy is an executive at a toy company (…dream job?) who apparently lives under a rock and doesn't know anything about Hanukkah. When a big new client invites her to a Hanukkah party, Christy enlists her co-worker's Jewish friend Jonathan to help her learn the holiday traditions. Jonathan, it turns out, also lives under a rock, and is utterly perplexed by how to decorate his apartment for Christmas to impress his girlfriend's yuletide-obsessed father. Favors are traded and sparks fly! If you're interested in this one, the full movie is available to stream for free from Lifetime.

Love, Lights, Hanukkah! (Hallmark+)

Finally, Hallmark got with the program and realized that Christmas isn't the only major holiday celebrated in December. For one of their rare forays into Hanukkah fare, the team at Hallmark called in a heavy hitter: Ben Savage, a.k.a. Cory Matthews from beloved sitcom Boy Meets World. (Now if they could just put him, Cameron Bure, and Mowry in a movie together, all of our '90s dreams would come true.) In this film, a restaurant owner takes a DNA test that reveals she's Jewish. This leads to a whirlwind adventure and an eight-night romance with one sexy Savage (Ben Savage, that is).

Round and Round (Hallmark+)

Hallmark generously releases one Hanukkah movie a year. Lucky us… At least 2023's starred beloved hunk Bryan Greenberg (one of the few recognizable guys in the slate who's had success outside of Hallmark — he's even acted alongside Meryl Streep! What other Hallmark stars can say THAT?!). This dreidel-centric cinematic experience is a charming take on Groundhog Day.

BYU understands the task at hand facing Texas Tech in Saturday's Big 12 championship game at Arlington, Texas.

The No. 11 Cougars need to beat No. 4 Texas Tech to earn the conference's automatic berth to be part of the College Football Playoff. Lose to the Red Raiders (11-1) for a second time this season and BYU (11-1) can count on one more game, but stands little chance of being in the 12-team field revealed on Sunday.

"We are really excited," Cougars quarterback Bear Bachmeier said. "We know what's at stake."

Texas Tech could earn a top-four seed and a first-round bye with a victory. The Red Raiders are expected to be part of the playoff field even if they should lose the rematch.

Texas Tech's impressive season includes all 11 wins by at least 20 points and it leads the nation with a victory margin of 35.2 points. The Red Raiders' lone blemish was a 26-22 road loss at Arizona State on Oct. 18 when standout quarterback Behren Morton was sidelined with a lower-leg injury.

Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire said both teams should be in the CFP regardless of the result.

"Without a doubt, we should both be in the playoffs, no matter what happens on Saturday," McGuire said. "I think we've earned the ride. ... We are as good as anybody in the country, and we're going to put on a great game."

BYU started 8-0 before the loss to the Red Raiders. The Cougars bounced back by winning their past three games by an average of 21 points.

Both teams went 8-1 in Big 12 play but it was a one-sided matchup when host Texas Tech routed the Cougars 29-7 on Nov. 8.

Star linebacker Jacob Rodriguez had an interception and a fumble recovery as the Red Raiders held BYU to a season-low 255 yards. Still, Rodriguez said that he was impressed with the Cougars' offense.

"I think they do a really good job of running the football," Rodriguez said Tuesday. "They don't get sacked a lot. That's a credit to their game plan. ... Just excited for the matchup. I'm excited to play high-level football."

Bachmeier passed for 188 yards and a touchdown, but turned the ball over twice to Rodriguez. The fumble Rodriguez recovered was on a backward pass.

Rodriguez is on the second tier of Heisman Trophy candidates and leads the nation with seven forced fumbles. He also has four interceptions, two fumble recoveries, 10 tackles for loss and a team-best 101 tackles.

Ironically, both programs announced extensions with their head coaches on Tuesday.

The Red Raiders rewarded McGuire with an extension through the 2032 season that will eventually pay him more than $7 million annually.

"We expect to continue to elevate this program where appearances in the Big 12 title game, like this Saturday, and the College Football Playoff are expected on an annual basis," McGuire said.

BYU coach Kalani Sitake turned down overtures from Penn State to remain in Provo. He received a long-term extension reportedly worth upwards of $9 million annually after leading the Cougars to back-to-back 11-win seasons for the first time 2006 and 2007 under Bronco Mendenhall.

"This is good for the stability and future of BYU football," Sitake said. "I'm excited about our future."

Like McGuire, Sitake expects two Big 12 teams to be part of the CFP field.

"I'm looking forward to both teams representing the Big 12 in this playoff, and doing it the right way," Sitake said.

Morton passed for 219 yards and one touchdown against BYU but also was sacked a season-worst four times.

McGuire had Morton practice with a boot on the leg since he returned from the injury but Morton said he will take the practice field Wednesday without it.

"Wednesday we'll take off the boot, put some cleats on and move around a little bit," Morton said. "And then Friday, for our fast Friday practice, stay in cleats."
