Martha Stewart is claiming her place in homemaking history.

On the Monday, Feb. 16 episode of The Skinny Confidential podcast, hosts Lauryn and Michael Bosstick asked Stewart, 84, for her thoughts on the "modern tradwife" trend. While the label — shorthand for "traditional wife" — only recently bubbled into mainstream usage through social media, Stewart was quick to assert herself as the trend starter.

"I'm the original tradwife," the mogul said.

She expressed her admiration for some of the biggest names associated with the movement, Nara Smith, 24, and Ballerina Farm's Hannah Neeleman, 35, though both social media stars have rejected the tradwife label.

As Michael pointed out during their conversation, the trend is generally perceived as controversial due to its implications about traditional gender roles in the home, namely the outdated idea that women should be dependent on their husbands.

Some content creators have embraced the all aspects of the domestic lifestyle, but Stewart's perception of the modern tradwife seemingly skews toward Smith's "made-from-scratch" cooking videos and Neeleman's depiction of her life on her Utah farm.

"I had pigs. I made my own prosciuttos on the back steps and the great, big crock. I had goats. I milked my goats. I made cheese," the best-selling cookbook author said on The Skinny Confidential. "I didn't do it on a big fancy farm like Ballerina [Farm] does, but I did all that."

Neeleman, who runs the Ballerina Farm business with her husband Daniel, became part of the tradwife debate in July 2024, when The Sunday Times published a profile on her life and family titled "Meet the queen of the 'trad wives' (and her eight children)." The influencer slammed the article after it went viral and posted a video explaining how it misrepresented her background and marriage.

Weeks later, Smith gave a wide-ranging interview with Harper's Bazaar, during which she set the record straight about whether or not her elaborate cooking videos should be considered tradwife content. The German-South African model maintained that her social media activity is "really not that deep."

She addressed the issue again in December 2024, when she appeared on Today with Hoda & Jenna. "I don't understand where that came from because I'm a working mom," she said, addressing co-host Jenna Bush Hager's question about her association with the tradwife label.
